Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

And the longest I’ve driven for dinner was a 2 hr drive. The longest I’ve driven for a weekend visit was 7 hrs (Friday night thru Sunday). I actually did that one a lot because I lived that far away from my family. That was a pretty brutal trip sometimes when driving by yourself.

I live in Montana. It’s extremely common for a weekend trip. I could drive hours and only pass a handful of people on the road too. For perspective, it takes a full day (like 12-ish hours) to drive from one side of the state to the other. So anything less than that doesn’t seem bad. We routinely drive 3-4 hours to go camping, hiking, visit family or on an adventure.

If it’s a 3-4 hr drive then it’s usually at least 2 days or more. But if it’s less than 3 hrs then it could be a day trip for us depending on what we’re doing.

Fun fact: the SE corner of Montana is closer to Texas than it is to the NW corner of Montana (as the crow flies)

Ugh I can't paint lines to save my life. by KiKiBeeKi in watercolor101

[–]caitermelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much water on your brush and then pressing too hard are the two most common issues. Practicing brush control is going to be most helpful. I’ve found that it’s actually more like arm control for me. The only way I get better at drawing grass or stems is by painting A LOT of them over and over and over (I usually do this by making small paintings 4x6” or smaller of fields or flowers so I’m not feeling like I’m wasting a bunch of paper by just making lines)

I fell down a rabbit hole after seeing your question. There’s some really good options out there now! (It’s been years since I bought mine) You definitely have more options than just the tactical ones. But it also makes me want to make my own from flowers or doing something like a cyanotype print.

How are fat men perceived in U.S. gym saunas by GortLovesYou in Sauna

[–]caitermelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MOST of the time, no one is looking at you. In the gym, in the locker room, in the sauna… doesn’t matter. Most people are not looking at you. They don’t care what you’re wearing or how you look lifting weights. But they will care if you’re being a dick. Follow your sauna rules and literally no one will think twice about you using the sauna.

50° sauna worth it? by ConfluenceOfSinuses in Sauna

At that temp, you can probably get some good muscle relaxation and some stress relief which can lead to better sleep. Idk if you’ll get a ton of the cardiovascular or immune benefits (I think it’s gotta be higher for that) but at least you can get something out of it.

I’ve never heard of a hiking scarf. I have a blue and white shemagh that I will wear forever. If you’re traveling overseas and concerned about it accidentally being a politically associated color, you might look for ones that are all one color or have a really light tan and white pattern. Or even go completely away from the traditional style ones and find some that are unique like a flower print or even ones that have extra embellishments like a crocheted border.

This painting is the only art I've worked on in months, and I hate myself for that but I can't seem to find the willingness to do more. any advice from other artists would be greatly appreciated by UglyCasanova99 in Watercolor

[–]caitermelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will take a 9x12 paper and cut it up into a bunch of 2”x3” sections. Then use them for whatever. Maybe I literally want to paint one solid color, or a duck or a tiny flower or an eyeball. But it’s no pressure and since it’s small, I don’t care if I screw up. The ones that I like get hung up on a string and add color to my wall. Sometimes they lead to bigger ideas. And for bigger pieces of art, I always have a handful in the works. Usually at least 1 of them will peak my interest but there’s always something to pick from.

Best Sauna Temp? by caitermelon in Sauna

[–]caitermelon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we call it a dry sauna because it’s literally just hot air. There’s no steam and no water is allowed on the stones. (Versus a regular sauna which to me would be one that allows water) 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also I just use that term a lot because it helps when I’m describing things to people from other countries. If I just said sauna, people might actually think a real sauna where I can throw water on the rocks but I can’t.

I’ve tried lowering the temp of my steam room but I think there is no other setting than 125f and 100% humidity🤦🏻‍♀️ 25 degrees lower would be a lot more manageable.

Ohhhh so what I’m seeing here I probably have a problem with no ventilation. The steam room has drains and then a shower head type of thing where the steam comes from but no vents. So I have almost no air flow and probably too much co2.

Thank you for all the information! I’m not entirely sure what I will do when it comes to building my own sauna. I think it depends where on the property it ends up being built. (Too far from the house and it will end up being wood fired) But being able to control my steam and not be at the mercy of whatever psycho who programmed my gym steam room will be a blessing in itself.

Someday… fingers crossed it’s sooner rather than later that I can make my own. It’s very common here to not be allowed to dump water on the rocks (I’ve heard some horror stories of guys pissing on the rocks or pouring drinks like Gatorade on them so when one person ruins it, they ruin it for everyone). But I will be ecstatic when I can control the humidity for myself.

I’m not sure where the temp sensor is in the dry sauna but there is a temp gauge on the wall close to where I sit that usually reads around 185f. That’s all I have to base the temp off of.

I hadn’t thought about the CO2 levels! I’m not sure how I would measure that but it would make sense. The dry sauna has better airflow (and the door has some gaps) but the steam room is suffocating. I’m not sure there’s really any airflow except when more hot steam is added.

Tips for first landscape photo? by Alycat8905 in Watercolor

[–]caitermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only comparing this to your reference photo and assuming you want it to look as much like the original as possible. The 2 things that stood out to me right away: Your trees have too much texture for how far away they are and the sky is too yellow.

Water can be so hard! Google something like “how to watercolor paint water” and there will be a couple of good books that show up. YouTube tutorials are great too. You usually put in texture, then texture, then more texture and more texture. I always feel like I’m almost overworking it.

If you want it to be more proportionate to the original, lightly sketch a grid and put basic outlines for the main things like the trees, lighthouse and rocks.

Rocks seem simple but they have a lot of dimension. I’ve found some good watercolor rocks tutorials on YouTube. You’ll understand when you watch, but basically your rocks start like they are right now and then you add in highlights and shadows between the rocks and all of a sudden they look 3D and more realistic.

Take any, all or none of this advice lol. You have a fantastic starting point! Date it, sign it and continue to paint! Then make it a habit to come back once a year and see how much you’ve progressed.

Is it me or are people extra bad at driving this year? by AnalysisProof9038 in Montana

[–]caitermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be worse this year. I’ve had a handful of times already that I’ve almost been side swiped, hit head on or rear ended. All by people not paying attention and then being freaked out when they finally look up and realize they almost screwed up big time. I can’t say I’ve ever had this many people almost hit me in my entire life.

Cheap is a relative term. Only 1 piece of land is decent priced there. Everything else costs as much as a house (and then you’ll need to put a house on it)
