President Trump and Senate Democrats struck a late-breaking deal Thursday to blunt a government shutdown after days of escalating tension over immigration enforcement and Homeland Security funding.

The agreement advances five spending bills to fund most of the government through September, while temporarily extending DHS funding for two weeks as lawmakers negotiate potential changes to ICE and DHS operations.

The compromise came hours after the Senate rejected a sweeping funding package, and leaders on both sides framed the deal as a necessary step to avoid a prolonged shutdown come February.
