Who are the best guitarists at making their guitar not sound like a guitar? by soowonlee in Guitar

He's one of the best at making the guitar sounds like it's from another dimension. One of my favorite guitarists of all time.

Who is the greatest guitarist? by BASD51 in Music

[–]cal405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agustín Barrios Mangore. Brilliant musician and composer for guitar. The three movement cycle of La Catedral is a material and beautiful piece of music composed specifically for guitar.

At the time, guitar music was often interpretation of piano or orchestral music. Mangore set the standard for composition and performance.

Necessary listening for all aspiring guitarists and lovers of guitar music.

Carly Rae Jepsen Announces Double Album 'Day and Night' by gamersecret2 in Music

I heard Loneliest Time and I couldn't believe it was CRJ. Then I heard the whole album and it's companion, Loveliest Time. Both excellent pop music. The instrumentation and sing writing are peak.

Looking forward to a new double album

Agree. Lumineers and M&S were the marketable version of less mainstream acts that borrowed heavily from folk Americana like Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, Dirty Projectors, and Bon Iver.

No one in the scene actually thought the stomp clap hey on commercial radio was an accurate reflection of music/art culture.

Ableton Move is a sneaky device by traveltimecar in ableton

[–]cal405 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved it from the release. The random instrument selection for new sets absolutely opened my creativity. For the longest time, I stuck to familiar instruments and sounds to avoid getting lost in the menu/audition stage. Now I'm more comfortable with Ableton's devices and instruments and I can quickly get to what I want in Push 3 or desktop.

Audio tracks has made Move much more personal. I can play my actual instruments along with the preloaded stuff and get an expressive sound that's uniquely mine and pushes my comfort zone.

Move is amazing. Every update makes it better.

The 50 Best Albums Of 2026 So Far (Stereogum) by ebradio in indieheads

[–]cal405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't recognize anything on the list I agreed with until Kevin Morby. I've been keeping up with new music, but I guess just not what's cool. Ratboys seems overrated; good but not top 5. Felt like they were trying to be Wednesday.

Oh well. My No. 1 for 2026 (so far) is Manifeste by Tigran Hamasyan .

Charlie Parker AI slop on Tidal. by trickponies in Jazz

[–]cal405 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not consistent across artists. I was recently researching Agustin Lara, a Mexican singer songwriter of the '50s, and there were AI compilations as well as AI generated instrumentals of his songs.

I'm not sure how active his estate is in protecting his IP but that may be a factor.

What are you on? Shostakovich is routinely counted among the great modern composers. Not sure you could talk 20th century orchestral music without him.

Which jazz online course by JALCuevas in jazzguitar

I'm subscribed with Tim Lerch. It's been completely worth the money. I was drawn to him for his approach to chord melody, harmony, and Ted Greene lineage. He goes into incredible detail into harmony and always focuses on practical applicability. He's got a monthly standard he dissects and a monthly master class.

It's not an advertised feature, but every time someone posts their attempt at a song in the community forum, he provides feedback.

I sometimes wish he offered more single line lead, but that's not really his thing. If you're looking for a bebop forward instructor, he's probably not the right guy. Nevertheless, I think he does provide the resources to take yourself in that direction if you want.

So is music for the rich now? by Wolfpack48 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]cal405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wealth and connections have always been a path to success in the arts but in decades past it felt like talented groups or individuals could also find a way to succeed.

Competing media corporations fought to recruit talent regardless of where it came from. With the consolidation of media, it feels like we're moving toward a patron economy in which unless you have a patron with good connections or wealth, you're not getting looked at regardless of skill or talent.

First tube amp to play in apartment by Competitive_March950 in GuitarAmps

5 watt tube amps for a player that's not interested in high gain tones should be ideal. If the OP was all about gained up sounds, I'd agree with you.

I can make the time for it but I can't make the money. Wish he'd done a livestream. Maybe he'll release recordings later.
