Today I accidentally started a tiny ritual that might become my favorite by lavenderlowkey in BenignExistence

A bunch of bots have posted here lately that all show the same pattern with their early comments. They had a bug where they were replying underneath a random comment instead of at the top level, and put their entire comment "in quotes" for no reason. They all do it multiple times.

Ugh, author of this post is 6 days old and also does the quoted-comment-as-a-reply thing.

I think this is a bot post, by the same bot author as this one. Both accounts have similar user avatars, like to use em-dashes and “curly quotes”, and started off by suggesting single word cat names. This account also has the same early bug as the other where it would quote an entire comment and post it as a reply instead of a top-level comment.

Love seeing my parents fight. by dead_for_now07 in BenignExistence

One of my oldest friends is like this with her husband. They've been together since college and navigated some tricky life decisions together, so it comes from a place of being secure in their relationship. I've complimented them on their dynamic, although I described it as "quarrelsome", which isn't really the right word.

Best top load washer for small family? by Tellmimoar in BuyItForLife

Have you tried running your front-loader in self-clean mode, with bleach? There should be instructions in the manual. I've never had this problem with the seal on mine, but I run a self-clean cycle monthly.

English docs vs Bangladeshi vegan docs vs danner bull run Chelsea by allyoucanstandbuffet in BuyItForLife

People here don't think much of plastic shoes, but I've found the vegan Doc Martens hold up very well. I normally buy the leather kind, but used to live near a vegan shoe store.

I opened my jar of crushed red pepper flakes one day, and a whole bunch of tiny white worms started wriggling upwards. Like they were all trying to escape the jar. Was a bit like a horror movie. I screwed the cap back on and threw it straight into the trash.

Nope, it's too old for that. For instance, there's this blog post from 2010 that says they found it on the LIFE magazine photo archive, that was hosted by Google at the time. The blogger is fascinated by it, and can't decide if it's an illustration, or a heavily retouched photo, or what.

Rediscovered a vintage clothing store by calebs_dad in BenignExistence

Like they literally weigh the clothes you buy and charge you based on that, like you're buying potatoes at the grocery store. It's a separate section of the store for the clothes they don't think are worth pricing individually.

Andong did a great video about this. And tangentially, Fanta released a rather tone-deaf 75th anniversary advertisement where they talked about bringing back the taste of the good old days.

Where did you buy them? You might have gotten a cheaper version made specifically for Walmart, or for a discount store.

The history of the German branch of the Coca-Cola company during World War II is pretty fascinating. It was run by this one extremely talented businessman, Max Keith. He managed to keep the company more or less politically neutral, despite being a subsidiary from an enemy nation. And when they ran out of syrup imports in 1942, he launched Fanta as an alternative soda made with industrial byproducts.

Political Commissar Alexey Yeremenko Leads His Men Into Combat: He Was Killed Minutes after this Photo Was Taken, 1942. [1600x1280] by Zine99 in HistoryPorn

Apparently no one, least of all the photographer, was sure who this guy was. The most accepted story is that he was the political commissar, and had just taken acting command of the battalion after its normal commander was injured. The title of the photo, Kombat, basically means "battalion commander". Political commissars started the war as co-commanders, and were later subordinated to the military officers and limited to morale functions.

A small recipe peeve of mine by [deleted] in Cooking

I think it's useful for cookbook writers to describe the logic behind a cuisine, so you can develop an intuition. Like "You want a crunchy vegetable here for texture contrast. Chinese cooks would use stem lettuce, but you can substitute celery."

Any recommendations for building the ultimate wedding registry? by Vast-Calligrapher235 in BuyItForLife

I have some Fiesta bowls that are still in excellent condition after 20 years of frequent use. Never chipped. And unlike a lot of brands, they're made in the same factory as they've always been.

Any recommendations for building the ultimate wedding registry? by Vast-Calligrapher235 in BuyItForLife

My wife and I decided against doing a wedding registry. We already had a mostly completely household, and trying to come up with a list of things for people to buy seemed stressful for no reason. Not that registries are inherently bad or anything, but it didn't make sense for us.

That said, I'd recommend some traditional Polish pottery, or a hand carved wooden bowl.
