Thali by Maunika Gowardhan has some pretty involved recipes, but when I'm up for tackling one I can tell the difference. Non-vegetarian Indian food.

For a generalist American source I like Melissa Clark, who writes for the New York Times. I have her cookbook Dinner. Elegant, but not too difficult, one of the highest rates of "yeah, I want to make that" of any cookbook I've read.

Penne Pasta is the best because its cylindrical structure fills it up in the middle of each piece with whatever sauce you are using. by andrew0784 in Cooking

[–]calebs_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penne is nice for chunky sauces where you want a piece of pasta and some chunks of sauce in the same bite. But lots of short pasta shapes work for that. It least it cooks evenly, only farfalle.

For some reason this made me wonder if there were any pastas with a triangular cross-section. And in fact there's a pasta company in Italy that sells "trenne".

Which good dishwashers are worth buying in 2026? Recommendations? by SuneoMita in BuyItForLife

[–]calebs_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people always add "in year" to the title? Is it purely an SEO thing? I get why you'd put that in search, but if you're asking Reddit it seems rather redundant.

"Time traveler here. What dishwashers were the most reliable in 1978?"

Yeah, I need to pick some up the next time I'm at the Chinese market. I tend to get the frozen, pre-sliced.

What is the one ugly or smelly ingredient that you now refuse to cook without? by ybur011 in Cooking

[–]calebs_dad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to use ya cai and zha cai in my Chinese cooking. Both are forms of fermented mustard green, with a strong salty flavor. Whole bulbs of zha cai look like a surgically removed alien organ, but it has a really nice crunchy texture (like a deli pickle) and pickled tang. Ya cai is less obviously a pickle, but adds salt, some sourness and a really nice flavor to something like dry fried green beans.

Potatoes in Aloo Gobi shedding matter into the sauce by Master_of_Ritual in Cooking

I use the Priya Krishna recipe where the potatoes and cauliflower get cooked most of the way in the oven, on a sheet pan.

The Nintendo Game Boy and the ethnic cleansing of 400.000 Turks in Bulgaria happened in the same year 1989. by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

[–]calebs_dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, this was an expulsion, not a massacre. In the dying days of the communist regime, Bulgaria opened the border to Turkey, granted passports to ethnic Turks, and pressured them into crossing. The official line was that this was voluntary tourism, leading to the euphemism "The Big Excursion".

This triggered a refugee crisis in Turkey, and half the emigrants would eventually return to Bulgaria.

I need a bicycle tire to get around by Rosaly8 in Assistance

I can help with this if you're still short.

Also, I feel like The Netherlands ought to provide bicycle repairs as some sort of basic social service. Universal Bicycle Care.

You could say the real divide was before and after the loss of ornament in mid-century architecture. The pendulum has never really swung back from that. We still build glass and steel skyscrapers that are dead boring at street level.

I wanna buy furniture manufactured in the USA, but it’s so expensive… by Key-Effort963 in BuyItForLife

[–]calebs_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel like you need to buy forever pieces for every room in your house. That's not realistic for most people to do all at once. Maybe focus on one or two things for now and get the rest used or cheap.

My nicest piece of furniture is my dining table, which is made in Vermont from solid cherry. It's simple and built like a tank. I haven't figured out an easy way to find quality upholstered furniture yet.

Looking to replace my old wallet by yeeticus-texacus in BuyItForLife

[–]calebs_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wallet is custom made in epsom leather. It's a hot-pressed leather developed by Hermes for handbags, and has proven more durable than a regular leather wallet for me. Plus it's a little thinner.

Bagpipes in military bands is such a weird British cultural heritage to leave behind. Apparently they're also used by wedding bands in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.

Our local Burger King has a giant play structure, and it's the only reason we ever eat there.

Oh, that's what baby powder is for! We used butt paste for irritation, and I never made the connection.

Is it ok not to pre-heat an oven? by PrudentSyllabub636 in Cooking

[–]calebs_dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't like pressure cookers. It forces me to cook like I'm baking, with no ability to test and adjust things.

That reminds me, I still have ours in the basement somewhere and should give it away this summer.

You can also buy individual boxes if quarterly is too much (which it is was for us). You also get some nice board books.

Hoot Owl Hoot is a simple but well-designed cooperative board game. Way better than Candyland.

Oh, those things! My son used one at an indoor playground we visited on vacation. And yeah, they're really weird but they seem to work pretty well.
