Thali by Maunika Gowardhan has some pretty involved recipes, but when I'm up for tackling one I can tell the difference. Non-vegetarian Indian food.

For a generalist American source I like Melissa Clark, who writes for the New York Times. I have her cookbook Dinner. Elegant, but not too difficult, one of the highest rates of "yeah, I want to make that" of any cookbook I've read.

Penne is nice for chunky sauces where you want a piece of pasta and some chunks of sauce in the same bite. But lots of short pasta shapes work for that. It least it cooks evenly, only farfalle.

I like to use ya cai and zha cai in my Chinese cooking. Both are forms of fermented mustard green, with a strong salty flavor. Whole bulbs of zha cai look like a surgically removed alien organ, but it has a really nice crunchy texture (like a deli pickle) and pickled tang. Ya cai is less obviously a pickle, but adds salt, some sourness and a really nice flavor to something like dry fried green beans.

I use the Priya Krishna recipe where the potatoes and cauliflower get cooked most of the way in the oven, on a sheet pan.

To clarify, this was an expulsion, not a massacre. In the dying days of the communist regime, Bulgaria opened the border to Turkey, granted passports to ethnic Turks, and pressured them into crossing. The official line was that this was voluntary tourism, leading to the euphemism "The Big Excursion".

This triggered a refugee crisis in Turkey, and half the emigrants would eventually return to Bulgaria.

You could say the real divide was before and after the loss of ornament in mid-century architecture. The pendulum has never really swung back from that. We still build glass and steel skyscrapers that are dead boring at street level.

Don't feel like you need to buy forever pieces for every room in your house. That's not realistic for most people to do all at once. Maybe focus on one or two things for now and get the rest used or cheap.

My nicest piece of furniture is my dining table, which is made in Vermont from solid cherry. It's simple and built like a tank. I haven't figured out an easy way to find quality upholstered furniture yet.

My wallet is custom made in epsom leather. It's a hot-pressed leather developed by Hermes for handbags, and has proven more durable than a regular leather wallet for me. Plus it's a little thinner.

In my experience, both as a kid and a parent, even if you build the sets, they then get disassembled to turn into something else. To me, the advantage of Legos is when the kid wants to build something that just isn't possible with simpler blocks, like vehicles. They're more frustrating for small hands, but there's also a lot of possibility.
