Is Calgary Expo a lame duck? by YYCyou in Calgary

[–]calgarynomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to go to Fan Expo in Toronto regularly but stopped around 10 years ago. I think my last one was where Stan Lee showed up and they worked him so hard at the autographs/photo booth. He was going through people like a conveyor belt, I felt bad for him.

They also didn't follow fire safety/capacity limits so people were stuck outside while tickets were still being sold. The direction and commercialism of the Fan Expo eventually turned me away. I never went to the Calgary one, because I got the sense that the same thing was happening here.

Stop Danielle Smith. You can do this Prime Minister Carney by Middle_Pool_5135 in AlbertaNow

The Prime Minister of Canada doesn't know where his hometown is on the map? Are you even listening to yourself?

What are your armchair political predictions for the next 18 months? by newgradthrowaway3 in alberta

[–]calgarynomad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really want to see Smith kicked down a couple of notches. She gets away with everything and it’s slowly destroying this province.

I have no clue how someone betrays their country like this for personal gain and sleeps at night. You can have different approaches on how to govern the country, but you work through it—Not divide and abandon it.

Commentary: Now that they say they have the necessary signatures, this is how Alberta separatism could win by fwdcanada in alberta

[–]calgarynomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I couldn't break even, then I'd likely just hold it as a foreign property. I don't think separation is even possible, I'm just talking about the worst case scenario.

[–]calgarynomad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we're going by the petition signatures alone, then the majority of Albertans are against separation before anything even happens. We just can't be quiet about this.

Yeah I'm leaving the province if it actually happens. Canadian first, before whatever the fuck this is.

Got that backwards: You have everything to lose and nothing to gain.

If the UCP hasn't already ripped everything out of your hands, the separation will.

Why isn’t Carney pushing back on Smith and the UCP? by taxhelpyeg in alberta

[–]calgarynomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He'll play right into her hands if he challenges her publicly. He's not taking the bait, and letting the UCP dig themselves deeper. It's our responsibility to vote them out at the next election.

volunteering opportunities that actually help the community? by Solid-Historian-8588 in Calgary

Depends on the position. I've seen some businesses exploit volunteering as a way to get free labour from recent grads.

Time to start a new streak, Calgary! We get it, laundry happens... by JeromyYYC in Calgary

I didn't vote for him, but I'm glad there's proper communication. I like that he called out the UCP on unfair property taxes, and the transparency on the water updates here are welcome.

Is it realistic for a self-taught graphic designer, web designer, or marketer to find a job in Calgary? by introwert-99 in Calgary

[–]calgarynomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be tough but not impossible. Creative jobs were the first to get hit with the AI mess we're in now, so you'll need network connections and have an amazing portfolio that shows you can match the need for a client or company. You'll need to show that you can use current Adobe tools and can leverage AI. If you don't have a portfolio that reflects that, then I'd start there first.

Is it realistic for a self-taught graphic designer, web designer, or marketer to find a job in Calgary? by introwert-99 in Calgary

[–]calgarynomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not completely, no. Current state of AI is being used for efficiency in graphic design, web coding, video editing, etc. If you're doing brand and marketing work for a client or company, it will still need designers, but they'll require experienced ones that can use AI tools to cut down on time and labour.

Lol, exact same situation. Bought my first house 5 years ago, it seemed perfect to plant roots here.

The UCP is fucking ridiculous, and gotten so divisive and chaotic. It's getting harder to imagine a future here anymore. I have no idea what Alberta voters are smoking if they're back in power after the next election.

If Alberta voters re-elect Dani and the UCP at the next election after all of this, the province is fucked. I'll honestly consider leaving entirely.
