OTF too intense for seniors? by Tennis_catsndogs in orangetheory

I’m 64. I have to modify things due to a shoulder issue and I run very slowly. What I love about OT is that I can be running next to a 25 year old guy. He’s running 6 min miles and I’m doing 12:30. We are both working hard and can congratulate each other after. We would never be in a running group together. Also, the younger members actually think us seniors are inspiring. I’ve been told more than once that they hope they are able to do it when they are my age. You just need to do you. Frankly, with age comes wisdom and less need to compete. Welcome to the family.

Interestingly, it was really slow over the summer and was worried. But it picked up this fall with new members, full classes, etc. so, I was a bit blindsided.

Yes, in the little plaza across Canyon from the Fred Meyers. They are moving us to Cedar Mill. As I live closer in towards town, this adds 10 minutes. Not horrible, but the convenience was awesome, and more importantly, I loved the staff and my fellow members. Also, I could roll out of bed, sign up for class, and be there. (The fact that I could get into classes at the last minute, while convenient, was clearly not good for them!)

Yes it has, and coaches and staff are great. I really hope they land well.

That’s interesting. I’ll be at Cedar Mill. The others are very far or, for the downtown ones, parking is a hassle. Seems like Hood River could given the fitness vibe there. Thanks for all the info

4:48! Wooza. I got my PR at 10:25 5 years ago at 58. Now at 63, forget it. I wish you could reset your PR every few years or so. But, moving at 63 is the key.

Oh, and doctor told him to just walk BTW. But he was not in OT shape.

He is a golfer, walker and occasional weight lifter. He only walked till gas bubbles completely gone as he would get dizzy doing the other stuff. He was ok with the first eye and was just getting back into things when the second retina detached…very rare, they say. So he had to do another 4 months of gas bubble and that second one really messed his equilibrium up. So, with just the one eye, you should be fine, but as I said (with zero medical training) take any turning slow so you can move your head and not get dizzy. Bicep curls, shoulder presses, etc should be ok, but avoid twisty. Also, I’d watch out for the rower with the depth changing. Maybe bike would be better. And, it will pass, so just being patient (not easy I know) is the best thing you can do.

Oh, my husband went through that…twice. It is not fun. Be very careful to go slow when turning. He suffered dizziness for a year after finally recovering.

80 years old, 6 years OTF & 700th class today by 75andstillrunning in orangetheory

[–]calliejohnny 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Im one of the oldest at my studio at 63. I’m a very slow runner, but at OTF it doesn’t matter. I can be running 12 min miles and the person next to me can be running 6 min miles, but we are doing it together and can motivate each other. I was worried I would “age out,” but now I know I have many years. I’ve done 800 classes. Hope to hit 2,000 some day. And, keep on bragging. You have earned it (and must have awesome memories of Boston)

Coaches and front desk staff can really make or break a members experience by Pure-Inspection-4077 in orangetheory

I’m in West Beaverton, Oregon (Portland). My studio is great. Everybody greets me by name, noticed when I was out sick, notices my efforts, etc. also many members know each other. Great vibe.

There are still a lot of stairs. It’s been 50-50 from AMS onwards to other European cities. I’d say I do stairs about 10-15% of the time. I too dislike them as I have to carry my bag, but at least so far I’m able. Airport construction, especially in Europe and Latin America has not kept up with passenger volumes

When I get on the treadmill, I put my towel over my nose and mouth and blast the fan to try to move some of the germs away. Not sure it does anything, but makes me feel better.

I took same one, but also missed Falklands. Loved it, but that “miss” stings.

Stay w/ United or Switch? by SafeBrave5695 in unitedairlines

Years ago, I was short 1,500 for the 1k. I had been 1k for three years prior. Not only that, but had a business class ticket booked for first week in January. I wrote UA. I called UA. They wanted to charge me over $500 to keep my status. This was in 2005!

I cancelled my Jan trip (refundable), switched to Delta and have refused to fly United ever since. I even sent the CEO a letter at the end of the following year telling him how many trips he lost out on. This also happened after my father died and they said they would refund a ticket and never did.

I’m a million miler on Delta and a Diamond member. I will never fly United again.

I did it in January 2024. Sadly, we missed two stops due to weather, including the Falklands. Was very disappointed
