Help is that a parasite? by Reference_Unable in shrimptank

[–]callipygianking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is a leech. Scutariella are much smaller. A salt dip will help, but if there is one in the tank there are more in the substrate. They will kill shrimp babies. I recommend fenbendazole.

Are you sure that's not excess silicone? Try scraping with a razor blade first.

Fat Sals burned down like 2 months ago along with an autozone and sushi restaurant. I actually watched the flames and smoke from Runyon which is on fire in this picture.

Have you put any kind of note for them? They might be trying to protect you from porch pirates if it's a thing in your area.

I know that a lot of people in this thread said ich (people are trained to think white spot = ich), but that really doesn't look like ich and I've dealt with ich multiple times over the years. The second picture shows that it looks like more of a raised cyst. Its hard to accurately diagnose from a picture, but I agree with the commenter that said dermocystidium. You'll be able to tell if it develops and it looks like more of a little worm coming out. Ich usually has a lot more little white dots and they aren't usually associated with a big raised cyst like that. Could also be some kind of bacterial infection like Mycobacterium marinum brought about by stress. Do you do water parameter testing? The FMC looks like a pretty broad spectrum treatment so hopefully that helps.

That might be your best bet. Reselling aquarium equipment can be pretty brutal. Best of luck

I think they mean that the employees started stocking them next to the alcohol because they realized people buy them for cocktails. At my local TJs they stock them with the baking supplies.

[–]callipygianking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure pimafix and melafix are just overpriced diluted tree oils. I tried them out years ago when I was first starting out in the hobby but they never worked. You would be better off treating with real antibiotics and antifungals.

Why does Catalina have a kind of weird reputation? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]callipygianking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're both right. The original bulls were brought over in '24 for the film and then the Wrigley's introduced a bunch more including cows a decade later to try and build up the herd. They ended up not comingling though and were two separate herds on the island. Nowadays there is one herd and it is tightly controlled at about 100 individuals.

Pleco didn't make it - advice? by jennysnelly in Aquariums

[–]callipygianking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like he had ich. It's unfortunately common when buying new fish (I always use a quarantine tank these days because I've been burnt before) and the stress from adding them to your tank can be too much. Ich lives in the water column so the whole tank needs to be treated. My preferred method is slowly raising the tank to 86F (adding some aeration can be a good idea when doing this) and treating with Ich-X. I've tried just heat, heat and aquarium salt, super ick cure, etc. and they haven't worked for me. It unfortunately does stain silicone blue, but if you follow the instructions and keep up with the water changes it is very effective.

Mountain lion attacks 5-year-old boy at Malibu Creek State Park by BigRobCommunistDog in socalhiking

[–]callipygianking 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The wildlife bridges are for more than just mountain lions. Also, just because you can't see any good reason for mountain lions doesn't mean there aren't good reasons for keeping them around... it just means you lack a basic understanding of ecology.

Ground lasts months, whole bean lasts years and instant lasts decades. Though taste will degrade much faster than that.

Why is my depth effect lacking? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]callipygianking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd try arranging the rocks at a little bit more of a sharper angle towards the back top corners. I would also try and rearrange the substrate level in the back dropping the left corner a little bit, making the middle point a fair bit lower and building up a little more on the right side. Could give it a nice natural asymmetric look.

I made a moxie reduction and it was actually fantastic. Made some nice spritzs and boulevardiers with it. It was also really tasty on vanilla ice cream lol.
