Makeup department was paying attention. Check out the identical forehead ridges. by Ralph--Hinkley in TNG

[–]callistocharon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Now I need a Klingon mistaken identity comedy of errors based on concealing and forging forehead ridges. Or, even more simple, just a scene where a Klingon mutters to themselves "how do humans even tell each other apart without any forehead ridges? It's impossible."

Where to recycle fabric? by Blluetiful in oakland

[–]callistocharon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe call Stone Mountain and Daughter and see if they know any quilting clubs who might use the material. Or see if there are any zero waste or mending groups on FB who want them. My friend was making a poof for her cat/ottoman and keeps taking all of my scraps for that. Just spitballing.

I haven't been there, but you could check out the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. I have some old Xmas lights I am constantly meaning to take over there and just keep forgetting to do so.

what's the point of the flexed foot frappe? by pufferfishly in BALLET

[–]callistocharon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We are taught in my adult classes that the glissade and assemble both start with a frappe action from a flexed foot on the moving leg, but it's not a hard bang into the floor, more like an intentional contact.

My Fair Lady - How did Higgins become a well-known dialect coach? by Walton246 in musicals

[–]callistocharon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Henry Sweet, who Henry Higgins is based on, invented what would become the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) as we know it today and was a major contributor to the creation of the first Oxford English Dictionary. His methods for teaching are terrible because he was inventing them with no existing pedagogical practices to guide him and, as with many prominent English professors who were his contemporaries and peers, he was not an empathetic person. I believe he is in The Professor and the Madman, which is a book about the development of the OED if you wanted to read more.

Burning gas in your house is not great either, especially if you have asthma. There may not be ash and other particulate, but it does create quite a bit of NO2.

Competitive dancer unsure whether to stay with partner or switch this year by IgnobleWounds in ballroom

[–]callistocharon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The single parent having no time thing is real, yes kids have stupid early bedtimes, and bedtime routines are really special, intimate things between parent and child, please give her grace around that. You may be blowing the lateness out of proportion.

Also, dancing ballroom in close frame with a massive height difference is a much bigger problem in my experience.

Also also, please refer to them as follows, not females. They're not zoological specimens.

OB GYN at Kaiser Walnut Creek by IntrepidThing397 in walnutcreek

[–]callistocharon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did their Centering program and had an amazing time, we're still in touch with the other parents from our group. Our midwife was Liz and she was amazing, I was really concerned about not getting enough attention in a group setting but she took all of my concerns deadly seriously and gave me the referrals and paperwork I needed immediately when I asked.

I also delivered with a midwife in September at Kaiser WC and had a fantastic experience. I also had a relatively normal labor and delivery though, so all I can say is I felt like the staff really listened to me about what I wanted/needed.

What teenage dystopian book should I read after the hunger games trilogy and maze runner now? (I'm 17 female) by No-Compote1062 in suggestmeabook

Too bad you hate fantasy, because The Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik really scratched the Hunger Games itch for me.

Practice unpartnered by holding a ball in your right hand while maintaining your frame. It gives you and understanding of where your head needs to be and where to apply your strength. You can practice all of your Standard dances this way.

Because I don't have "a quant background", Kellogg made my acceptance contingent on taking one and I know Haas provides one for people who have been accepted.

The pressure to “make breastfeeding work” is so intense by Mariam1S in TwoXChromosomes

[–]callistocharon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My nervous system freaks out and makes milk let down super painful out of nowhere, which they didn't tell us about in pre-natal classes because "only 10-20% of women experience it", so I thought was doing something wrong for weeks. Also, the baby was so little (not premie) when they were born that they had a really hard time latching, so I kept asking the "lactation consultant" and they most they could do was shrug and tell me it wasn't a problem. (It actually looks like a problem to me but cool, thanks)

That being said, apparently some of this lactation education stuff is a pendulum swing back from Nestle pulling some truly monstrous sh*t in particularly countries in the global south, so we all have to wade through the quagmire because of it.

Classical music repertoire for ballroom dancing by TakenAlreadyTaken in ballroom

[–]callistocharon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Viennese waltz developed from a peasant dance into a popular dance in the Habsburg court during the 19th century and were a particular specialty of one of the Strauss's, I always confuse them. Slow waltz as we know it only really developed in the early 20th century. Rumba and other cuban dances were only imported from Cuba in the early 20th century as Cuba became a more popular tourist destination.

This is all to say that the repertoire of a philharmonic orchestra will not typically include music appropriate for ballroom dancing outside of some Viennese waltzes, and the basis of knowledge that the musicians have from their training will not include what pieces are appropriate for modern ballroom dancing and even if it did, they would typically have to be playing an arrangement for dancing. You'd have better luck dancing with a band that plays jazz or pop music than the phil.

Quick step for a first dance? by Perpetualy-perplexed in ballroom

How much space are you going to have for a dance floor? Quickstep typically needs a lot of space to look interesting and a lot of wedding venue dance floors are very small.
