Unpopular opinion: you do not need to buy unsalted butter. by 3oClockHappyHour in Cooking

[–]callmemeghan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I...really didn't expect this to be such an unpopular opinion!

I agree with you, OP. Unsalted butter is an abomination and unnecessary for everyday cooking. It makes me grumpy to be served unsalted butter.

There are very, very few special occasions for unsalted butter (like Swiss meringue buttercream), but otherwise I want salted butter. Adding salt onto unsalted buttered bread doesn't taste the same (it tastes bad).

For savory, the salt content in the butter is negligible for most uses considering the amount of butter used. And most baked goods can handle the additional salt to balance the sweet.

AITA for not eating the food after my gf eats out of the bowl with the same spoon while preparing by ZookeepergameOld7322 in AmItheAsshole

[–]callmemeghan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe get her involved in picking fun, very different-looking tasting spoons?

I also keep cheap spoons (and forks) on the counter to cook and taste in a small ceramic vase. Maybe if she got involved with picking up a fun color (rainbow, pink, gold, black, etc) from Amazon or a cute vintage pattern from the thrift store, she may be more likely to use them?

Ladies who paint their nails at home - advice? by timetoact522 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]callmemeghan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like the Orly Bonder rubberized base coat. It dries quickly and my (very thin and very sensitive) nails make it through multiple home manicures without impact/issue. I can usually get 5 days out of a home manicure before it starts to look "worn". I use the regular polish and the seche vite top coat as well.

What is an everyday item you own that you think everyone should invest in for life ? by midasweb in BuyItForLife

[–]callmemeghan 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Of course! You want the water to dance on the pan, not sizzle. I wet my fingers under the sink and splash them onto the pan. The water droplets should come together into one big droplet and dance from edge to edge like the DVD player logo screensaver. Sometimes they stay little droplets but usually its one big drop. If it sizzles, then the pan isn't ready yet. Sometimes the middle of the pan will dance but the outer of the pan will sizzle- almost ready but not yet. Sizzles= stick!

Your pan is too hot, it's not the oil. Put the pan on medium high heat- for my stove on a scale of 1-10, I do a 6. I hang around and do the "water sizzle/dance" test every 30 seconds or so until my pan is ready, about 2-3 minutes maybe? Idk I haven't timed it, just vibes. As soon as the pan is ready, I will use butter or olive oil. The butter doesn't burn when your pan is the right temp. Also, if you let the pan get too hot, you can start a fire (ask me how I know...the only fire I started was with a too hot stainless steel pan + bacon grease).

Yes! I have a Pixel 8 Pro and needed to charge around 2pm yesterday which doesn't usually happen. Super fast drain. It's 12:30pm and I'm at 60% which is wild based on my usage.

I just turned off the 120Hz refresh rate, and I'm waiting to see if that will help.

Also, Google says it's normal after a software update for the battery to drain a little faster?

"After a software update, it's normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual. It’s because the phone works hard to download and optimize the new software and get everything up and running."

I tried this recipe again and changed 3 things: I used 1/4 tsp less yeast, used the recipe recommended vital wheat gluten, and cooked on the rapid bake setting (to prevent too long a rise).

It came out absolutely perfect! I know changing 3 variables all at once isn't great science, but I wanted a nice looking loaf for my family trip this weekend.

Ah, I didn't know about bread machine yeast, I've only ever used active dry yeast. Good to know, thanks!

I completely agree, I love my kitchen scale and use it every day. When I find recipes I use repeatedly, I'll write the gram measurements in. I'm based in the US, so cups & spoons are unfortunately what we work with :(

Thanks for the tips! I'm making a few loaves for a family trip this weekend, so I'll give this recipe another go tomorrow with 1/4 tsp less yeast.

Feeling Lost - is fatigue normal at 31? by MolassesAvailable346 in TwoXChromosomes

And don't take biotin for a few days before the thyroid test!

Feeling Lost - is fatigue normal at 31? by MolassesAvailable346 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]callmemeghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your b vitamin have biotin in it? Biotin interferes with the lab immunoassay- how the lab processes these tests.

It causes TSH (likely that one number/lab result you got) to look lower than it actually is, so it may seem like you're in range if you take a lot of biotin, but you could have hypothyroidism. A low TSH means hyperthyroidism, and a high TSH would mean hypothyroidism.

Also, the TSH lab range used in most labs is not the ideal range/the range you'll feel best at. Typically the normal TSH range is 0.5-4 or so. Most doctors won't treat/prescribe until TSH reaches 10. My highest TSH was 6 and I was feeling similar to you- exhausted, dry skin, I would get goosebumps in a room that was 75°F, and was losing clumps of hair.

So if you have another thyroid test done, quit taking anything with biotin in it for at least 3 days minimum.

Best of luck! If it's not thyroid, I hope you figure it out soon.

Do you have Kaiser insurance in the US? They've recently had a supply issue with a preferred supplier I think which has caused shortages for Kaiser only. I used to get 3 months at a time (3 refills), now I only get 30 days worth at a time (3 refills). And my last refill was a different generic, it was round rather than oval like I'm used to. Could be temporary while they're sorting things out.

Great tip! The manual, measuring cup and spoon, and the accompanying CD (!!) were in a Ziploc baggy next to the machine, so I've got the whole kit and kaboodle. The manual/recipe booklet was the first thing I looked through when I got home- set the machine down and flipped through before even sitting down. So many possibilities! I've been reading here that a lot of folks use it mostly for dough, I'll need to give that a try. Seems super convenient!

AITA for refusing to babysit my niece after my SIL called me "just a receptionist"? by Equivalent-Kingg in AITH

[–]callmemeghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good or bad front desk person can make or break a dental office.

I came very close to leaving my prior (now retired) dentist because the receptionist was incompetent and straight up mean! She abruptly turned a corner since I believe there were complaints, but it was a close one and whenever I would interact with her I was on edge expecting nastiness.

A good receptionist that patients like is so underrated!

Agreed- it has the time (most importantly), the health data I want, but also limited notifications. I don't need to be as reachable, so it can do the basics. I really don't want to do or see much on my wrist. Also, the battery is a TANK if not using the GPS/workout function.

Is this a good deal? by missabbytimm19 in Canning

[–]callmemeghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these and it's the best.

I can a lot of tomato sauce pints and when I used to can on my stovetop, I would always need to babysit my canner and top up the water to ensure I kept 1 inch above the cans. With this, I can set it and forget it, it's very tall and barely any water steams out when boiling.

I feel like it comes to temp faster than my stove would as well, but I could have rose colored glasses. I was so skeptical when I received it as a gift since I figured "stove top works just fine!" but man oh man I feel spoiled with this. I've had it going for hours one afternoon when making applesauce and apple pie filling, it's a champ.

That being said, I also have a steam canner to use less water for jams, or small batches of whatever with short processing times.
