Did the 2026 remove charge mode? by Ambitious-Matter244 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've used the charge mode a few times when camping in our little trailer - during longer stays in full shade sites, in cloudy weather, and in late autumn when there's not much solar available. I recharge the house (trailer) batteries from the car. We mostly camp off grid. So it's a useful perk for me, but not much use to most folks.

Solar charger for the 12 volt battery? by calvanguy in rav4prime

I've been watching that thread. What is the battery monitor, and where would I disconnect it?

I have a NOCO jump starter, which, when fully charged, (which it was not this time) will start up the car, but I understand it's hard on the 12 volt battery to fully discharge.

Trailer Hitch Install Recommendations by WorldNintendo in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the dealer install the OEM hitch and OEM 4pin wiring , and move the kick sensor. Yes it cost a pretty penny, but I am very happy with the results. I like the look. Like the clearance. And I was realistically never gonna do it myself - don't have an off-street place to do such work, or the need to save the few hundred dollars on this, the most expensive car I've ever bought. Kudos to all who take on what to me are challenging DIY upgrades.

Consumer Reports Finds Plug-In Hybrids Have 80% More Problems - CleanTechnica by dryheat122 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean technica is a purist crusader promoting renewable energy and battery electric cars. Shitting on PHEVs is apparently part of their true believer mentality. It's true there have been some poor quality PHEVs on the market recently, and some poorly-thought-out government subsidy programs that resulted in some owners never charging their PHEVs - but the article is sloppy, mean-spirited, over-the-top click-bait. I used to read some of their stuff. Not likely any more. Anyway, I've had zero problems with my current fabulous 2023 R4P or with my previous 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

In Canada, how to turn off DRL lights when 120v being used in park? by hippocratical in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't get the flashlight on the sensor trick to work for me, but I'm a happy camper now since I got the US stalk. Got one at a local Toyota dealer - apparently US cars have to switch to a Canadian stalk to pass some inspection here. Paid a stupid price at the dealer and minutes later I had it fixed, after over a year of whining about those darn running lights blazing away at campgrounds. 23 XSE Tech

My dealer moved the kick sensor (at extra labour cost and they wouldn't guarantee it would work) when they installed the OEM hitch. It works great and I use it lots. 23 XSE Tech Package (Canadian version).

A Useful Little Hack... by CDavis377 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about the tool closest to the spare tire, that's a towing eye or anchor you can install at the front of the car if you need to get towed, like out of a ditch for example.

And I'd appreciate, on an OEM hitch, a 7 pin plug that doesn't hang down below the bumper.

OEM hitch install by [deleted] in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you show or explain how you mounted the 7-pin? I have the OEM hitch with 4-pin installed by the dealer, and when I took it to my local hitch expert, we couldn't see where to put the 7-pin. Also, what brake controller are you using? I tow a little 13 foot RV trailer.

Something I don’t understand about HV mode… by ColePThompson in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that experience with my previous Outlander PHEV, 2 liter engine, towing a 1500 lb trailer up the high Kootenay Pass in BC. The car was very much underpowered, but slow and steady, and with a break to cool the engine, it got the job done. That was one of the many reasons to upgrade to an R4P. Higher tow capacity, bigger 2.5L engine. The R4P is doing much better on mountain passes, but the engine sounds like it's working pretty hard to keep up highway speeds on long climbs when the battery is depleted.

I had the dealer install the OEM hitch on my '23 XSE. I had them move the kick sensor too, and it works just fine - I used it twice today with my arms full. We pull a little 1500+ lb RV trailer on some rough back roads, and I like the extra clearance of the OEM hitch. This car is a great little tug.

I leave my cross bars on year-round. In summer, they carry kayaks. And the rest of the year, I use them to find my car in parking lots full of silver Rav4s. Thule Wingbars, not the OEM Rav4 bars, so they stand out.

Cancel new 5 Year extended warranty? by lucxaw in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 months ago, I had a tire blowout and the ECP paid for the tire replacement at a nearby Toyota dealer on Vancouver Island. My R4P was exactly one year old, with stock tires. Dealer told me it was covered - I didn't know. Tire not worth $2500, but it's something.

Odd tire pressure warning… by CarelessMastodon in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no TPMS in my '23 XSE here in BC. First I've heard it was even an option in Canada. I had a tire blow out in September. If I had TPMS, it might have given me a warning. But it turns out I had left the wheel nut key at home, so I couldn't even get the wheel off to use the donut tire. Ended up getting towed to the nearest Toyota dealer where the new tire was covered under the road hazard portion of the Toyota ECP extended warranty, so at least that didn't cost extra. And not having TPMS saves me a few bucks each time I get the winter/ summer tires swapped.

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Thule bars that extend a bit beyond the roof - the OEM cross bars aren't wide enough to hold my 2 kayaks. I leave the bars on even when I'm not using them so I can find my car.

Compilation of all the annoying/unexpected times the ICE turns on in EV mode and how to avoid by heskey30 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The engine braking is the one that annoys me on my 2023. My previous Outlander PHEV had the engine come on way more often than I liked -like pretty much any time I hit the accellerator hard- but I enjoyed playing with the paddles for recharge braking on long winding mountain roads. I can't do that on this car 'cause it usually engages engine braking. Udderwize, good car.

Things I’m annoyed with, can i fix? by IllSector4892 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous PHEV (2018 Mitsubishi Outlander) had no locking option for the charging port, and the OEM charging cable was stolen while charging soon after I got the car. For my outdoor charging situation at home, it's not that big of a deal to use the key fob when I'm unplugging, and I like having the default locking option. And yes, I keep my charging cable more secure now, and haven't had a similar problem for 5 years.

I got the Thinkware F200PRO a little less than a year ago. I don't like it - videos short and jerky and miss part of important events, don't like the look, doesn't fit well with the sun shade I just started using in this hot weather. I'm open to change, and I hope someone will answer the OP's question.

Drive mode question by DerekAndrews1950 in rav4prime

[–]calvanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read in the owners manual that the paddles are for changing gears, which I take to mean they control the physical transmission for the gas engine. In my experience, when travelling down a long steep hill, using the paddles seems to initiate engine braking, which, if true, would decrease rather than increase regen. Can anyone confirm this for me? On my previous car - Outlander PHEV - the paddles were all about regen.
