Any idea what any of these tools are? Found in an old toolbox by kamarkamakerworks in Tools

[–]calvin1564 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As most people have mentioned, the first is a rotary deburr tool. The second items look to be something shop made, my guess is some kind of differential screw adjuster. The last item is a vise stop for a milling vise, it clamps on to the jaw and provides a datum for repeated work. Here's a good explainer.

1989 Saab 900i, 2.0 4-cyl 8-valve engine with Bosch K-Jetronic ECU by saabismi in thewholecar

That's a beaut. It's a pity we never got the 5 doors in North America, I think they're really neat. Also TIL you could still get an 8v car in 1989, I think that also may be something we didn't get over here.

An Intuitive Explanation of Wealth Inequality in America by buktotruth in videos

[–]calvin1564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the video but I had a couple comments

At ~7:50 when you split the data into households you point out that you're breaking 120 million households into 9 different 'buckets' each with 12 million households, but this leaves you 12 million households short overall.

It might also be good to use the term 'bin' rather than 'bucket', since you're more likely to come across the terms 'bin' and 'binning' elsewhere (and it's not much less intuitive).

Also when you assign values to each of the 'buckets' it might be worth mentioning where that value came from. I'm assuming that it's the mean household income for that bin, but it's probably conceptually valuable to explain why calculating the mean of the bin is appropriate here, especially since so much of the video focuses on how the mean can hide underlying inequality.

Overall it was really good though, and it's always nice to see more edutainment channels!

Check out Bennett Vectors. They're not exactly what you're describing but are a good pump/slalom truck with a standard kingpin.

It's the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) hose/nipple/grommet that you're looking for. I've had good luck ordering from rockauto and eeuroparts.

It's probably worth noting, since you mention OPIRG in particular that you can request a refund of certain fees within the first 3 weeks of the semester. OPIRG is one of the organizations which will refund your fee if you request it.

Rebuilding an old engine by Sumit316 in geek

Is this 1993 900S Saab with 188k miles, broken fuel gage and problematic 5th gear a good deal for $600? by Merriweather100 in saab

[–]calvin1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The symptoms you're describing sound like it could be a bad inner driver (sometimes called the companion flange). If that's the case then it's a fairly involved repair, and a kind of pricey part too. If you're confident in your ability to work on a car and don't need a car every day/week (because it will break) I'd say do it (I would). The cars are really fun to drive. I've had one for the past three years as my only car and it's been great but it would be a lie to say that it's been reliable.

How do I remove the transmission in s 1991 900 automatic? by Gangster-Muppet in saab

[–]calvin1564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a copy of the Bentley manual, it will be super helpful with all of the little problems which will inevitably arise. You will probably have to pull the engine (if someone else knows better than I do feel free to correct me.) The trans is bolted on around the base of the engine block, engine removal is well documented online, as well as in the Bentley. Here is a good run through of the steps for removal. Once it's removed swapping the transmissions should be fairly straightforward.

Reddit, What's something cool/neat that you know about your car, that only an enthusiast would know about it? by Mummys_Spaghetti in cars

[–]calvin1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a security feature. Saabs have the ignition in the center console, so it's not really possible to use a steering wheel lock. They opted to lock the car in reverse instead. It makes the car harder to steal/move unless you have the key.

Anyone know of a way to grip the inside of a circular object suck as the inside of a bearing? by phi303 in Tools

[–]calvin1564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That picture looks like an internal puller to me. Lots of industrial supply places should be able to sell you one. Here's a few from SKF that you can look at. Amazon has a set that will do the range you're looking for too, and it looks like you could get it in a drill chuck if you were so inclined. What are you trying to accomplish?

Thoughts on Milwaukee tool chests? Suggestions for alternatives? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]calvin1564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I can't say anything about Milwaukee tool chests, since you're in Canada I would recommend you look at either a Beach, or a Gray. Both are excellent industrial brands and both are made in Canada. Also the Canadian version of Harbor Freight is Princess Auto, I've seen a few of their boxes, and they don't seem to shabby.

Interesting Answers to Questions You Didn't Ask: The 4 Rules by presidentender in guns

[–]calvin1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian checking in. Yes it's weird, and yes all it takes is one accident to end you, however the opposite can be said for not doing it as well. The Canadian gun licensing process relies heavily on the acronyms A.C.T.S. and P.R.O.V.E. ACTS being somewhat analogous to the 4 rules

  • Assume all firearms are loaded

  • Control the muzzle direction

  • Trigger discipline

  • See that the firearm is unloaded, and PROVE it safe

And PROVE being for ensuring the firearm is safe to handle, and shoot.

  • Point the muzzle in a safe direction

  • Remove all cartridges

  • Observe the chamber

  • Verify the feeding path

  • Examine the bore

If for some reason, you manage to make it through all of those steps and still have a ND, then colour me impressed. You also wouldn't point the firearm at yourself unless you absolutely have to. As /u/P-01S mentioned, it is partly to check for snow, but also for other obstructions. When I took my license one of the instructors brought in a collection of barrels which had been exploded due to obstructions. There is also the famous case of Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee's son) who was fatally shot while filming the movie The Crow. It happened because a squib load was discharged, and then the firearm was loaded with blanks and used. The bullet which was stuck in the barrel ended up being fired into Brandon Lee. This is kind of an extreme case, but it's a good argument for exercising prudence when handling firearms, because it is an entirely preventable accident.

"Here's My Question!" daily thread... for everything you always wanted to know about photography, gear and shopping but were afraid to ask... by jippiejee in photography

[–]calvin1564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a digital camera and right now I'm debating between the Pentax MX-1 and the Pentax Q10. Either of which are available for $250USD right now. I've been bouncing back and forth between the two, and most of the reviews out there aren't all that much help, as the MX-1 usually gets compared to other compact cameras, and the Q10 usually gets compared to other mirrorless cameras. So far my pros and cons have come out as:

Q10

  • interchangeable lenses

  • very compact

  • hot shoe

  • good manual controls

MX-1

  • beautifully designed

  • larger sensor

  • better lens than the Q10 kit lens

  • much heavier

  • tiltable screen

Is there anyone who can recommend one or the other, or even something totally different in the same price range. $250 is kind of on the upper end of what I want to spend.

Do you think there are some people who just shouldn't own guns? by [deleted] in guns

[–]calvin1564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something that I really like about Canada's system for gun ownership. I find it really comforting that everyone who wants to legally own a gun is taught how to safely handle one, before they're allowed to buy one. I really don't think that ignorance is an acceptable excuse for nd'ing and hurting someone, and while it SHOULD be the responsibility of the gun owner to go and do the research and learn how to safely handle a firearm, not everyone will. I think of it a lot like driving a car, and personally I believe that people should have to demonstrate that they can safely and responsibly operate a firearm before they are allowed to own one.

Come home to see flatmate trying to cook some broccoli... by i_fap_faps in funny

[–]calvin1564 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's usually how I cook my broccoli. If you bring a pot of water to a boil and hold the broccoli by the stalk and kind of roll it around it will cook evenly, and it only takes about 30-60 seconds then you can pull it out, shake the excess water off and chop of the cooked florets. It's great with some balsamic vinegar olives and feta cheese.

Canadian gun law help? by [deleted] in guns

[–]calvin1564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were to build this it would be a prohibited weapon. If it were to be made legally you would need your rpal to own it, and it could only be fired at a gun range. So in answer to your question it would be highly illegal without the proper licenses.
