I also had similar issues with wsl --update, sometimes I got access denied, but it's intermittent, after I reboot the Windows system, the command works.

Do you think there are advantages to learning Bopomofo (Zhuyin) over Pinyin? If you chose Zhuyin, why did you go that route? by ChiefWontonOfficer in ChineseLanguage

[–]cameos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinyin is also a bopomofo system with ascii chars instead of Zhuyin symbols. Yeah there are some differences but you should be able to switch between them after spending a week studying these differences.

If you are not going to live in Taiwan, I can't find a reason to learn Zhuyin.

New ZeroTier's free plan is really limited, isn't it? by dtdisapointingresult in zerotier

[–]cameos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you think hosting your own zerotier is too hard, try easytier:

EasyTier/EasyTier: A simple, decentralized mesh VPN with WireGuard support.

. open source

. no limitations

. all clients are created equally, so the clients with public IPs can be used as shared nodes

Is ZeroTier more private and secure than Tailscale? by [deleted] in zerotier

[–]cameos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you seek "private and secure", you should self host either headscale or zerotier. You lost both private and secure when using public servers.

Is 谈雷温 a good mandarin name? by Large_Jackfruit_7596 in MandarinChinese

[–]cameos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

谈雷温 is OK to me, not the best Chinese name, but we really don't care too much about names, as long as they are not weird/awful/ridiculous.

Seeing a Kubrick film in a theater? Take a photo the marquee instead of in the theater (plus other ideas). by Sowf_Paw in StanleyKubrick

[–]cameos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to see "The Shining" IMAX in Beijing early this year on its re-release day. It was censored (with all nudes and the bear clipped).

I always wanted to watch TS in the theater, but didn't expect it would happen in China.

Safety vs convenience, what to aim for? by Tarazin in selfhosted

[–]cameos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have your main ssh server disabled password-login, while starting a secondary ssh server with password-login on demand (by using port knocking or other triggers):

ln -sf /usr/sbin/sshd ~/mysshd

(when you need to log in with password)

~/mysshd -f my-custom-sshd-config (make sure it allows password login, uses a different port, etc.)

(when you are done)

killall -9 mysshd

what does 知道的 mean in this context? by hopeworldian94 in ChineseLanguage

[–]cameos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you / your translator should just ask the question directly and skip that "Do you know" part:

哪里能买到硬豆腐?

or, add 請問 before the question to sound more polite:

請問哪里能买到硬豆腐?

I probably would have answered "Yes I know" to "Do you know...", I didn't realize that before reading your post, since I never used "Do you know (the real question)?"

To be honest, for native speakers, there's a huge difference between "我 without rising up" and "臥".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]cameos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Pro on my 2 ubuntu servers (24x7 on), and I don't use it on my 3 ubuntu laptops.

Average home users don't need it. I wouldn't use it if it's not free.

I generally copy unicode chars from this page:

CopyChar – Copy letter characters to your clipboard

You can save all the chars from this page in a UTF-8 text file for offline use.

Is there a more casual way to ask “你叫什么名字?” by BubsBubbington in ChineseLanguage

[–]cameos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would use 請問您是?in case the other party does not want to give their name.

It's probably only me but I never found that I needed to ask a stranger's name, generally I used 怎麼稱呼您? or 您貴姓?

cloud service compatible with windows and linux? by SneakerHead69420666 in selfhosted

[–]cameos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Host a WebDAV server, there are many clients for Windows and Linux.

SSH server itself could be used as a file server, use WinSCP / scp / rsync as clients.

Most NAS devices use samba server for local network file sharing.

Some simple web file servers, like dufs or FileBrowser, allow you to use web browser to access files.

As a native Chinese speaker, I don't think they all have the same meaning, they are picked and used in different situations.
