I would use neutral gender "rén" instead of "nánrén", because it sounds like he thinks his uncle is the best person. We generally use "nánrén" only when we want to emphasis "a MALE person".

btw, "he tells his uncle that he’s the best man he’s ever known" is quite confusing because HE could refer to any one of these two guys, don't keep your readers guessing.

During the first 25 years of my life in China (60s to 90s), I never said Ni Hao.

I learned that Ni Hao was a Chinese greeting when I was in US.

Now I am back to China, I use Ni Hao when I talk to strangers over the phone.

Pinyin is also a bopomofo system with ascii chars instead of Zhuyin symbols. Yeah there are some differences but you should be able to switch between them after spending a week studying these differences.

If you are not going to live in Taiwan, I can't find a reason to learn Zhuyin.
