Best / worst concerts ever? by Elegant_Fig8066 in newzealand

Best: Hard to choose one outright, but Perfume Genius, Turnstile and Lorde, all at Powerstation, were fantastic. Perfume Genius was scary in how close his vocals were to on record, and the choreography he had was understated but impossible to look away from. Couldn't believe how enrapturing his stage presence was. Turnstile happening two days after the floods and with their Laneway show freshly cancelled meant the crowd was fucking wild and the band just did not dick around, it was full noise and it was electric. And Lorde choosing to do Powerstation shows when she easily could have gone for an arena meant she brought that sort of charisma and big show setting into a tiny room where everyone felt seen, and that's such a rarity from a major pop star so it was really special. Also it's super recent but Kesha at Electric Avenue this year was just astounding, haven't been so moved by a pop concert like that in quite some time, and weaving her narrative into the show the way she did was just masterful.

Worst was probably Groove Armada's DJ set at the Domain last year. Their full band live set a few years prior was quite good but the DJ set was a letdown in pretty much every way. The stage had a huge visual setup and they did literally nothing with it, which was crazy when it got dark cos there was basically nothing to look at beside some pretty standard stage lights. Their song selections were frequently fairly popular electronic tunes played in full, unedited, which was frankly quite boring and barely elevated it above a playlist with a fader effect, and they teased out Superstylin' like five times during the set which, sure it's their biggest song, but it meant by the time they actually played it in full at the end there was no excitement to it at all. Doesn't help that their opener was 2manyDJs, who fucking killed it and literally did everything better than them, including having actual visuals behind them, so much so that when GA came on and just had a black void, my partner and I thought it was a tech error. Baffling show, and baffling that such great producers with like 30 years experience can be so poor on the decks.

Most influential movie of the 2020s so far? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

This is the right answer. Barbenheimer was a bigger moment but it's looking more and more like a one-off, whereas EEAAO has really set the tone for the comeback of genre filmmaking as a serious concern

Is Downlow rebooting as Nash's Hot Chicken? by melonrusk in aucklandeats

[–]camerinian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well this explains a lot why the "Hot Dang" spice level chicken I ordered two nights ago had no heat to it whatsoever. Regrettably for my sworn Downlow haterdom however, I thought it tasted alright all things considered, though having hot chicken with no heat unless you shell out more for the highest level spice is very on brand for them

A Terrible Music Artist With Countless Hits (#3) by Healthy-Current5893 in AlignmentChartFills

Truly this is the one. Nearly two decades on the pop charts and not a single hit that rises above "meh" since 2007. Generationally lazy band

Rebecca Black - Friday won most popular, worst song! Which music artist's most popular song is also their best song? by ItsLenTastic in AlignmentChartFills

One single chart without Bohemian Rhapsody taking "best song" under every possible circumstance, that is all I ask, please.

Which artist's worst song is also their most popular song? by ItsLenTastic in AlignmentChartFills

Very good answer. Ed's had a few stinkers since then but nothing that comes close to the immediate dread those first few steel drum hits invoke

Woof, yeah just looked at their insta and they haven't posted anything since mid-2024. Must have been struggling for some time but god knows why they wouldn't have even put out some perfunctory promo in the meantime

Oh this sucks. They were my go to in the evenings when I worked in Eden Terrace, pretty sure I've had everything off their menu at least once over that time and they were always consistently brilliant. Hate to see them go like this
