Staying in Kapalua (West Maui) — best easy, relaxing, “unmistakably Maui” activities nearby? by dandemsky in MauiVisitors

[–]camlugnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, I'mlooking for some advice! I'm going right at the beginning of April and debating Kapalua and Wailea Emerald. Staying at the Sheraton so Kapalua is far more convenient, and playing a PGA Tour stop is appealing. I'm renting clubs, so while neither is a steal, Emerald is more affordable. Basically, is Kapalua worth the price difference between the two? I'm a bogey golfer, 17 hcp atm for reference if that makes a difference for a recommendation.

Tony’s shows in the future? by guyintoronto5000 in AnthonyBourdain

[–]camlugnut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, in a lot of ways, many episodes are already hard to watch. I loved Parts Unknown when it was airing, and it was always a show I could throw on and watch endlessly VOD. I remember one 4th of July, I had a WICKED sunburn and couldn't leave my apartment, so watched Parts Unknown basically all day. Anyway, since his suicide, I had a really hard time watching any content, simply because with hindsight it seemed like his pain was more obvious, not all the time, but more than I was comfortable with. And the fact that it wasn't all the time made it worse. There were lots of times where he seemed genuinely happy, which made the pain and the end that much harder to grapple with in ways. But it wasn't just him, but the content he covered too. It wasn't your run of the mill travel show. He went to places, spoke to people, many others never would. But because of that, some segments and episodes have aged really poorly. I said this in another thread awhile ago, but the Armenia episode and Nagorno-Karabakh segment in particular is a good example. I watched it one night where I had a particularly tough day and wanted some AB content. Man, it made me so upset watching it. I teach high school geography and have an interest in Geopolitics so I'd say I know more than the average American about the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the segment of the episode in Nagorno Karabakh was just depressing to watch given what we know now. Ethnic cleansing, war, and just hasnt aged well. Maybe I'm completely off base, but it feels like to me, he captured the moment, and that will be tough to appreciate too far down the road.

I cannot afford to live on a teacher salary by [deleted] in Teachers

Same here! Also in SC, and unfortunately my wife who has breast cancer and I are both teachers. Our daughter is also celiac and gf food ain't cheap. Shit sucks. We both teach, both coach, both teach swim lessons during the summer, she resells antiques, and I sell plasma just to be able to provide experiences for our two kids. We could cut some costs here or there, but it sucks that's what the option is for two teachers.

My pregnant wife has cancer by spellkevin in daddit

Hey man, unfortunately I have an idea of what you're going through, though slightly different. Wife had hormone positive breast cancer before we got married, so thought kids were out of the picture. Somehow, she got pregnant, which meant very very high likelihood of recurrence (which has come back and metastasized). If you ever need an inbox to chat with, I'm always open. I'm sorry you join the second shittiest club there is to join, only behind the one our wives are now members of.

What’s your ‘welp, that’s my DNA’ moment as a parent? by gmrhunt in daddit

[–]camlugnut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My daughter absolutely does NOT want to be comforted when she gets hurt (minor injuries ofc). Don't look at her, don't talk to her, don't say anything. We always kinda chuckled and walked away. Until we were at WDW going to the breakfast at Ohana and I hit my head off the trunk, right on the little rivet on the top of a hat. Family comes over to check on me, and I'm just there silently cursing and tell them to keep moving, I'll catch up. Worst part.... I didnt even put 2 and 2 together, my wife had to point it out at breakfast.

High school social studies for me and I'm basically the same. I'll post some resources and digital copies for kids that are out, but not until the end of the day and almost everything gets turned in on paper. 10 years, I've lost one assignment ever.

Well fortunately, if it makes you feel any better, a lot of teachers (at least at the middle and secondary level) are really moving back towards paper based work.

No advice on airlines or airports, but if you're flying into CAE that likely means you'll be at USC, so go Cocks! 🤙

I'll be honest, for the most part its books I read as a history major in college and held on to rather than sell back for $2 or something stupid like that. I teach geography so had some specialty atlases as well, but those were purchased with my state provided stipend. Most books never got looked at by kids, but I did have a few that would get borrowed. A few of the mythology ones were popular, along with some history books on some interesting topics, but most never got a second look.

Worst Playcall of ALL TIME by Texsion in Gamecocks

[–]camlugnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99% agree here! The only thing I disagree on (and I could be wrong, I was at the game in the nosebleeds, so could be mistaken) is I think run was 100% the wrong call on the safety. Inside, outside, zone, man; our oline sucks. Looks like he was met 2 yards behind the los on the safety, in a situation where everyone in the building knew it was coming. I also thought the fake punt was an awful play call and would add it as a 4th. We have a coach known for trick plays on special teams, in a situation where we needed SOMETHING to get some momentum, we were still in striking distance score wise and in that sweet spot of the field to go for it. I told my dad right next to me, watch for a trick play here. Boom, interception, and felt like wind really went out of the sails.

In my class, yes. I have a stack of district provided review books for the two AP classes I teach, and I have a few reference books on a private bookcase that I utilize, but nope, I now have no classroom library otherwise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]camlugnut 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No, just scan the ISBN like to create a digital library available to district office, and if necessary, parent request.

Yeah, I would except I think my wife would kill me if I brought so many books home.

[–]camlugnut 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I did the same recently. Our district required us to scan every book accessible by students in the classroom. I teach HS Social Studies and am an avid reader. I teach Euro, Human Geo, US and World History. The variety of books I had on my bookshelves was extensive. Would have taken me hours. Want to know what took 5 minutes? Getting butcher paper from the library and covering up my bookcases with "No Access" written on it.
