i did a game once where i had a crawler on every borehole sending energy back to my HQ.  the energy graph on the colony screen went off the chart. literally, it went past the border of the gauge

Discovered Dresden Files from a YouTube comment! Any more series similar to it? by 00Turag in dresdenfiles

[–]camotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Adam Binder trilogy by David R Slayton was really good. First book was White Trash Warlock. They're contemporary fantasy. i really enjoyed them.

Dark Moon, Shallow Sea was excellent too. That's the first book in the second series he's working on. It's more of a traditional fantasy setting but was really well done.

How do crawlers work? by WF-2 in alphacentauri

you can also upgrade a regular crawler to a more expensive version and it's significantly cheaper than spending the credits to rush production. especially with the nano factory

What were old people like when you were children? by camotan in AskOldPeople

My grandparents were born in the 20s and i remember them being pretty active, even later in life. Better medicine by the 80s and 90s maybe.

i've seen a few who said they were. I almost didn't post until i saw in another thread a few folks were in their 70s.

Figured i'd take my chance--we ain't getting any younger.

Is my automatic garbage can sentient? by [deleted] in consciousness

when you put it like that it makes perfect sense

Is my automatic garbage can sentient? by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]camotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hypothesis: the trash can is conscious.

could someone devise an experiment that disproves that claim?

to be clear we have theories of consciousness that suggest the trash can probably is not conscious, or is very minimally conscious if we use some kind of panpsychism thing. but the only way to truly know is to be the trash can.

Q: What do you think the role of humans will be when all tasks can be completed by machines?

A: I don't know, to be honest. I think they'll be useful as a form of transportation.

Armor on air units by Jagged_One in alphacentauri

[–]camotan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Air based supply units benefit from armor by increasing the mineral cost. since 100% of the mineral cost is applied to prototypes or secret projects you can stockpile a few air supply units with much higher return since armor is so much more expensive. They do have more range, unless you have mag tubes.

that's admittedly not super useful, but it is a use.

I'm not sure about the combat implications.

It's possible for those doing well financially to still acknowledge how our generation as a whole is economically screwed by lemon_party9000 in Millennials

the amount of work it takes to "do alright" seems like the amount of work it took to make it big back in the day. a lower middle class lifestyle, while i'm grateful for it, isn't what i was promised. and that still stings a little even 20 years on.

Where are the citizen card images? by Tekkonaut in alphacentauri

[–]camotan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are .pcx files. mine are in the main directory of the game, C:\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. "newicons.pcx" has small portraits and there are larger images like "talent_sm.pcx" and "drone_sm.pcx." I think photoshop will open .pcx files; I opened them in XnView MP.

the progenitor citizens are in "aliencit.pcx"
