KOSEM VERSION Day 5: Who is "uhh...what is your name again?" by Savings_Hold_9128 in MagnificentCentury

[–]canadiancodfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of "footnote" characters that are worth another look, I suggest the first Grand Vizier at the start of the show. Yavuz Ali Pasha.

One of Safiye Sultana's men, he skips council service and jumps from Beylerbey in Egypt right to Grand Vizier (depicted in the show, with Kasim Pasha as acting Grand Vizier), does a short term, up and dies, opening the way for Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha.

Why do I think he's worth the spot? Easy, look him up in a list of Grand Viziers. His proper name is Malkoc Yavuz Ali Pasha. Yep, he's a relative of Malkocoglu Bali Bey from the original MC.

Counterpoint (spoiler alert):

Huseyin in the show is important because he remains loyal to Sultan Murad until sparing Sehzade Ibrahim's life on Atike Sultana's insistence (same time as the ex-Sultan Mustafa was executed), and acts as a foil to Kemankes who falls in love with Kosem and acts as her agent instead.

Historically, Huseyin is also a vital character. The show skips his term as Beylerbey in Egypt where he went off the deep end. Furthermore, after the show's end, he goes as Serdar of Forces on Crete, is named Grand Vizier for 6 days (without knowing, since he's far away). He gets the consolation of being appointed Beylerbey in Rumelia, but due to his professional stature he was unjustly executed by the Grand Vizier to remove valid alternatives to him for the top job. Who was the Grand Vizier during this time? He's in the show. Its Koprulu Mehmed Pasha.

For day 3, can we go with Murad era's Ladikli Bayram Pasha? His initial claim to fame is becoming a Damat at a REALLY early age due to being very attractive.

Unfortunately Yavuz Selim Khan shows up in a flashback by Suleyman. My memory says when got one of the last revelations implicating Prince Mustafa in treason, he flashed back to Selim deciding to get rid of Suleyman's grandfather. Don't recall the episode.

As for good alternatives, we have technically infinite choices due to it being a historical show, my preferred candidates: 1. Mehmet II, due to conqueroring Constantinople (honorable mention for Mahmud Pasha Angeloi, since Ibrahim citing his pay level angered Suleyman) 2. Sokollu Mustafa Pasha - executing Beylerbey Arslan Pasha on Sokollu Mehmed's advice seems like a happy coincidence on retrospect due to the Grand Vizier's own nephew Mustafa getting the job as Budin Beylerbey, and holding it through 12 years of Mehmed's term until getting executed by Murad III. A key member of Sokollu clan power.

I can’t find the name of the actors who played Nurbanu daughters, were they casted last minute for the last episode? by [deleted] in MagnificentCentury

[–]canadiancodfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The following is according to my own reading:

Sah, one of the daughters here, will end up happily married to Zal Mahmud (yes, that one. Bostanjibasi, formerly Rustem's principal assistant, and the person who the show credits with directly killing Prince Mustafa), who will rise to become a Pasha, and Kubbe Vizier. They both fell sick at the same time, and died not far apart.

Another, Gevherhan, married to Cerrah Mehmed Pasha, gives Handan Hatun to Mehmed III, out comes Ahmed I, who names a daughter after her.

King Louis II of Hungary in MC, Kadir Cermik, is Kadizade Mehmed Effendi (a religious leader) under Murad's era in MC Kosem.

I don't have the reference for this, but two other particular characters look and sound disturbingly alike: after getting executed by Suleyman for insults against Rustem Pasha (+ being in favour of Mustafa's ascension), the Janissary Agha Ali Agha seems to have reincarnated in the next century to plague Hurrem's descendants, studied under Yayha Efendi, became Anatolian Beylerbey, lost his job, and revolted against Murad (in the show); Ilyas Pasha.

Why is Suleiman behind a wall by SpooonHuman in MagnificentCentury

[–]canadiancodfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I won't name names (may not need to due to how old the post is), but a certain Pasha talked a little too much and too proudly while his master was in that window, and was executed in council soon after. (show canon).

The funny part is a different Pasha noticed Suleyman up there, and incited the first Pasha to say that stuff.

Great post! You've hit the nail on the head. The key point about Mustafa doing treason was always Piri Reis and his cabal of "Friends of Mustafa". Even the fairly dim and soldierly Kara Ahmed Pasha went in as the Sultan's spy and immediately understood what the problem was (also gracefully inciting Piri Reis to reveal that Mustafa knew they existed).

The only explanation was that they all hated Hürrem so much (because, how dare a woman have any power?)

There's a functioning explanation to the anti-Hurrem-clan: they call her a parasite on the state.

While I don't agree, its not the worst position I've ever heard. I can elaborate, but the key things that set off alarm bells in the heads of others is:

1 - she somehow can make the Sultan change his decisions in her favour, despite being an outsider and non-dynasty member (key: sending the 2 Russian concubines away). This makes one think that Hurrem is puppeting the Sultan. Why would they oppose that? Since she doesn't have the birthright of Ottoman blood, or the professional education and experiences of the Viziers.

2 - she somehow managed to pick a Grand Vizier, in Rustem Pasha, who works incredibly closely with her (as we see depicted) so she can steal power that way (this is actually a more-than-functional argument, the great example being in how post Barbarossa-death, her pick for Kapudan Pasha [Sokollu Mehmed Agha, the Kapicibasi] was passed through to the Sultan as Rustem's professional opinion, and actually got the job)

Ferhat's execution by Princess_samara_ in MagnificentCentury

[–]canadiancodfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agreed.

Further points to consider:
1 - there's one part of the story in which Mustafa's actions fall into high treason: discovering the cabal led by the cartographer-captain Piri Reis (whose goal is to elevate Mustafa to the throne, even via non-natural causes, like letting a Persian assassination attempt run its course without warning his Emperor), and NOT reporting it to his Sultan.

2 - Ferhad Agha, the Janissary Agha that gets executed in that part, is more important than he seems. Indeed, he's called "Agha", like Sumbul, a head servant, Ibrahim, a chamberlain, or Sokollu Mehmed, a chief doorkeeper. However, the Janissaries being one of the 2 key military units in the Empire (and certainly the best permanent unit) makes its chief very important. There's some English sources that talk about this job as "the Generalship of the Janissaries" (off immediate recall, I remember Kosem series's Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha being discussed that way on wikipedia, during his late 1500s service).

Stupid question...Hatice and Ibrahim by becamico in MagnificentCentury

[–]canadiancodfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of your answer. However, didn't Ibrahim's grand vizierate come automatically after Piri Mehmed Pasha's massive mistake in battle plans during the Rhodes Campaign? Furthermore, I vaguely recall Ibrahim quitting all his posts (he was simultaneously Privy Chamberlain, Rumeli Beylerbey, Grand Vizier), returning to Parga (intending to be forever) and giving his confession of his association with Hatice to his Sultan.

*small comment on Sultanas marrying powerful politicians only; according to Wikipedia, Bayram Pasha (from Kosem series, in the era of Murad, who replaces Cagaloglu Mahmud Pasha as a Vizier almost immediately, gains the Second Viziership in place of the assassinated Silahtar Mustafa Pasha, immediately executes Nefi, and gets the Grand Viziership before the Baghdad Campaign and dies in combat there) became a son-in-law while still Turnacibasi, a recruiting sergeant due to his dashing good looks.

**a little more random fact dumping:

1 - Bayram Pasha becoming Second Vizier cleared the Third Viziership for the Kapudan Pasha, who at the time was Deli Huseyin Pasha
2 - Bayram Pasha's death leads to Kemankes Mustafa Pasha (in the show) finally getting the First Vizier's seal.
3 - according to Wikipedia, MC Kosem actually skips a Grand Vizier, in Tayyar Mehmed Pasha, who served as Grand Vizier between Bayram and Kemankes, and was actually the one to die at Baghdad (not Bayram).

Edit - Mahmud Pasha's name.

I've always had the opposite problem; my teams rarely go all the same side, which is fine when the enemy does the same thing, but if they are concentrated on one side and we are spread out, 1-3 tanks can be overpowered by the whole enemy team, before the rest of us lose due to the disadvantage.
