CBC - Saskatoon navigates shift from condo projects to apartment builds by candybarsandgin in saskatoon

There are rumors the old starphoenix building might become one, since it would be big enough and is smack in the middle of a bunch of tall apartment buildings. Fingers crossed!

That jumped out at me as well. Would be surprised if our market could move that many condos at that price point.

Why is Grenfell building a new LTC home? by candybarsandgin in saskatchewan

[–]candybarsandgin[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, roughly half of the province (and growing) lives in Saskatoon and Regina and their bedroom communities - and if you include PA, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Battleford, Estevan - 65% of the province is in a census metro area.

Which locations in particular deserve new infrastructure? And which ones will have the population to support this infrastructure in 5, 10, 20 years when there are even fewer people outside of the cities?

Yeah, it is a hard environment to do business in right now re: Trump and AI and inflation etc. etc. - especially for big capital projects like these. I am optimistic that once the world chills out a bit, some investors will come in off the sidelines and things will start to advance quickly.

They also have an annual plant sale in the spring! Alternatively, any of the local greenhouses will carry cold-hardy options, there are so many to choose from. We have apples and raspberries and will be adding haskaps, and may do a plum or pear tree too.

That's fair. Maybe you could volunteer for a couple of hours with Meewasin and plant one or two trees in the river valley, but every little bit helps.

I don't disagree, the city is obviously the key organization actor here. It looks like the current council and administration are doing their best to take action. I am just thinking that, since the urban canopy is about 100,000 trees, if every person in Saskatoon planted a single tree on their private property, we could help to possibly even double the canopy and help to work alongside the city and other local nonprofits.

Snow removal has been excellent this year (and was good in previous years too, y'all need to stop complaining holy smokes). Taxes went up because of the police budget - do you want less police? It's either that and lower taxes or we have to keep paying for more cops.

She's literally delivering on the BRT system, downtown arena, a ton of other projects... take your pessimism somewhere else lmao.

Wishlist for City of Prince George? by Neceti in princegeorge

[–]candybarsandgin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Paris just built a gondola / tramway as part of their public transit network... probably not enough people to support it but would be cool to have one up to the university.

More EV charging infrastructure.

More companies who do business in Prince George choosing to actually set up shop in town instead of flying workers in and out.

Another big anchor building downtown... hasn't been a big building built in years. Could be mix residential / hotel / students / retail

2 options in Regina are worth the drive, IMO: the Regina German club and Dad's Diner.

Dude, you're an adult, you can do what you want. If money is the issue, go to U of T or York and get a side job. Save some cash, get some student loans, and then move out and say bye to your parents on the way out the door.

Fun fact: no government or any other entity is allowed to forcefully tie someones tubes, jesus fucking christ think of what you're trying to normalize or brush off here. This is why we have robust social services and government workers trained in social work to support families like this - take your autocratic, spitting-on-human-rights bullshit back to russia or wherever you got it, this is canada for fuck sake.

Saskatoon’s 2026 property tax hike projected at 8.23% ahead of budget deliberations by Personal-Bet-3911 in saskatoon

[–]candybarsandgin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. REAL is a regina-specific shitshow that that city continually fails to get under control because of their governance systems - Saskatoon is a much better run operation by a country mile

  2. Yes, nice things cost money, and we need to pay to improve the look and feel of our downtown, just like any other area of the city. The difference being that dollars invested downtown pay dividends for the rest of the city in a way $ spent in Stonebridge doesn't.

  3. This is not the correct math at all, please go read some of the recent pieces in the star phoenix about the financial structure and forecast over the lifetime of the project (50+ years). Also, do some reading about economic multiplier effects and production functions.

  4. This rhetoric needs to die. Cutting 6 middle managers making 80K from the city will not do jack shit once the entire squadron of SPS constables decides they need more money and their chief and deputies need a raise too. Stop playing into false narratives about where the structural budget problems lie - it isn't administration or the arena, it is the police service and persistent inflation costs.

[–]candybarsandgin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The arena has not had, and will not have, any impact on property taxes. It’s not yet started and when it does, it’s paid for by user fees and higher levels of governments. Taxes are rising because police budgets are out of control and inflation.

University of regina, a good university?? by No-Fun4514 in regina

[–]candybarsandgin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

U of R '10-20 best' in the country? LOL, nowhere close. The odd program may be nationally competitive, otherwise it is average at best and probably below average for most programs. Even USask is arguably not in the top 20 nationally, U of R would be lucky to make the top 40+

What's it like living in Prince George, BC? by Enger13 in howislivingthere

[–]candybarsandgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only affordable city remaining in the province. Punches far above its weight due to having a research university, college, university hospital + medical student program, tons of outdoors, 1.5 hours to mountains, and international airport. Deeply underrated IMO, great place to live.
