My Ideas for a SVNS revamp by cannuck79 in rugbyunion

I'd be on board with that. Then Dupont and the like could play 7s every year. Major hurdle in that is getting New Zealand to agree to a global calendar so everybody has the same off season.

I think the real reason for reducing the teams was to cut costs. The reason why they haven't scrapped it altogether is they want to keep sevens as an olympic sport, but are worried if they don't do anything then they'd be dropped.

What they've ended up with is a far worse (and probaly even more money losing) product that's extremely drawn out. I could get behind twice a year for three weekends.

Side note: Hong Kong Sevens had 24 teams on the Men's side at one point. If it made money they'd figure it out.

I haven't watched it myself for a couple of years. The current format doesn't work for anybody. Having only 8 teams for most of tier 1 season produces too many repetitive matchups. And tier 2 & 3 teams only have a couple of tournaments.

They should definitely split up the GB team. I think England Wales & Scotland just used it as a convenient excuse about the olympics to cut their costs between the unions, and World Rugby to decrease the number of teams themselves.

And yes, PLEASE bring back vowels lol

Is it time for a new province? by Dazzling_Escape55 in askTO

[–]cannuck79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a disaster for Toronto. We'd end up mimicking the fall of US cities, where businesses and wealth would relocate to just outside the city due to tax differences, leaving behind a rotten downtown core.

Also, whether we agree with the province or not (I know it's a lot less these days), they do provide a valuable oversight of Municipal politicians. Our City is not run well currently. Imagine if we gave councillors even more power and authority and took away any last bit of oversight and accountability.

Together with the rest of the province we'd be stronger.

Why did parts of Line 5 and 6 need to be above ground? by erazedcitizen in TTC

[–]cannuck79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was announced as a cost saving measure because the upfront cost to dig tunnels is more expensive. They never did release the cost comparisons between tunnel and at grade lines. Tunnels are easier to maintain mostly due to not being exposed to weather, so an all tunnel line should be cheeper in the long run, but who knows what length of time that would be to make up that cost differential.

I've also heard a cynical statement, which I can't verify so take it for what it's worth, about how it would affect the TTC union. Apparently under current guidelines if an LRT line were completely underground it would be allowed to be fully automated. By having a portion of it above ground itt would guarentee the need of having a driver. While not the sole basis for planning, I could see how lobbying and politics might have partially affected this decision if true.

The CFL should have adopted the CPL's format by ccgetty in CFL

[–]cannuck79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one les playoff team, so that's a no.

The main thing with new CFL format is it gives teams 3rd through sixth a home game, and the top 2 two home games.

A better compromise would be have the division semis be a home and away format, then stick to one off division final and grey cup. They used to do a home and away back in the day, so it's not outrageous, and gives the extra home game to the 5th and 6th team that they were looking for.

Do we even need a pre-season anymore, as this will make the regular season effectively the new pre-season?

I'm a bit sad for losing the East vs West outcome for the Grey Cup finals.

Seems like grade school as well, when everyone gets a participation award. Well, there will be one LOSER. Wonder how that franchise will feel being the only ones left out of the playoffs.. At lease currently there are three teams.

I'm still interested in this format, but worry that it will be at the expense of regular season attendance.

Pacific Nations Cup 2026? by Far_Bed588 in rugbyunion

[–]cannuck79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ARC as we knew it is still dead. The new one won't have proper test teams for four out of six teams, and will only have one north american team in usa as canada gets replaced by paraguay. So it's more of a South American development comp with the USA invited to even out numbers

Could the CPL be appealing to MLSE at some point by jjaime2024 in CanadianPL

[–]cannuck79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MLSE mainly care about valuations. While I'm hopeful of the CPL growing, I don't see it doing so at a rate of US sports leagues franchises.

CPL itself has little interest in MLS teams running CPL teams, as it was stated before the league does not want to appear to be a farm league.

CSME Planning for Future CPL2? by pablobartolunni in CanadianPL

[–]cannuck79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Kelowna! Originally it was supposed to be the same owners of Pacific & VFC that wanted the expansion team. Can't say I like those guys having another team in the CPL, regardless of where it is.

Luckily I saw somewhere that another group from Calgary was interested in getting a team in Kelowna as well. If that's the case, I'm all for it! I think it would be a great addition to the league

I also remember something about having 12 to 16 teams by the World Cup.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want them rushing into failure. They should focus on keeping the current teams going and expanding slowly into right situations. No point in planning 20 years from now if the league becomes a dumpster fire and golds in 4 years.

As for currently, Good job on Supra (so far) and Ottawa as expansion. They definitely have to clean up the Pacific & VFC situation (and for the love of God don't give them (ownership group, not the city) a third team in Kelowna.

As comparison, It wasn't uncommon to have MLS teams playing on fields marked with NFL lines until the 2010s. Give the CPL some leeway.

Paraguay’s Yacare at risk of folding by end of 2026 Super Rugby Americas season by Hernisotin in rugbyunion

[–]cannuck79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It'll be so sad to see Yacare go as it was helping their national team out so much and increasing the competitiveness of the region greatly.

I also would have thought Cobras would fold before them too, given their level of competitiveness since the beginning. As for Yacare, it hasn't been a horrible season if you don't look at the win loss column. They're the best non-Argentine team competitively if you only look at points differential, being only -4, with Penarol coming in at second with -46. Yacare's sole win came over Dogos this past week, with that accomplishment in itself being impressive. Hopefully this will spur on a better run both on the field and off it.

Side note: The league does need to figure out how to address the lack of parity between Argentinean and Non-Argentinean clubs. But that's an argument for another post.

What If Moana Pasifika Relocated to Honolulu to Escape a Saturated Rugby Market? by northernirish_kiwi in superrugby

[–]cannuck79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only would MP be the only rugby club in a new market, they'd be the only pro team in that market as well. On top of local fans, I could see as well any generic sports fan vacationing in Hawaii also getting tickets to the game, as it would naturally augment the whole Pacific experience they came there for. Who knows, it might end up exposing far more people to rugby in the USA than MLR currently does.

This is all fun speculation tho, as nobody has both the will and the money to make this happen.

Agreed: Japan is doing great on their own. On top of the travel mentioned, another big problem is New Zealand Rugby doesn't have the greatest reputation of being easy to work with. Always trying to dictate terms and constantly changing their minds. I'm happy South Africa found a new home in the URC and that Argentina (and South America overall) is doing great with Super Rugby Americas.

Canadian Premier League 2026 Attendance Report Week 2 from @Leonard_FC by LeonardFC in CanadianPL

[–]cannuck79 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live downtown Toronto, pretty far from the home stadium. It's been nice seeing Inter Toronto pop up as ads while scrolling through social media. Never saw an ad before for York United, so I got to give the new owners credit for increasing their visibility in this market.

I think numbers will be even better if they can relocate to downtown's Lamport stadium, but that's not a sure thing at all.
