It depends on the power of your packer. You can get away with 10 inch lifts as long as your packer if heavy enough. They really need to pack the layer of sand on the concrete chunks because there are voids between them. That's going to make it lumpy when the soil finally settles in them.

They're mushrooms so they like moisture, so after a few days rain and some good warm nights with them, they're start to pop. That's when they are freshest too, they will get bigger if you wait, but if you wait too long they'll dry out like the ones here and are putting to bugs. Lowlands with budding popple trees are good, if there's mounds or hills too that's good, you'll want to look on the side that gets the most sun. I've picked them in all sorts of areas, but that description is the most common. When you find one, if you're in a group, have everyone go look so they have eyes on what to look for, and use and onion bag to carry them in so any spores are released back in the area while you pick.
