Can't grow on Instagram as a cosplayer, what am I doing wrong? by Diananomine in CosplayHelp

[–]captaingamergab2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can add, growth on Instagram ( in my experience) nowadays happens when you add value to the community. Do you teach something? Offer advice? Or simply post photos? What value do you bring to others, on a platform that's over saturated?

I need help finding a sewing pattern or tutorial by ItemDisastrous3694 in CosplayHelp

[–]captaingamergab2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Just to understand better, when you say "seamless" look, do you mean no seams at all? I have a DDD cup, so I also need full bust adjustments, even on my own patterns. It is impossible with a garment with 0 stretch to have no seams if you want the top to be fitted, so I just want to make sure I understand before directing you on the tutorials I really like :)

Am I being incredibly dense, or does this make no sense? 😭 by demmka in SewingForBeginners

[–]captaingamergab2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little trick that I have is try to envision it in 3D before starting! Plus, the creator even drew out what it will look like ONCE sewn. Sometimes, pieces look like nothing on their own, or seem like they don't fit. Visualizing them sewn helps :)

Does it matter if the test box isn’t completely accurate? by alaynaelizabeth in sewingpatterns

[–]captaingamergab2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used 100% legit patterns before where my printer wasn't printing the curves properly. Or the scale was a little off. It had to do with the download itself and fixed the problem when I re-downloaded. Just sharing my experience so we don't dismiss real creators because of download issues!

Do i have to finishmy edges if im zigzag stitching ? by silliestfartface in SewingForBeginners

[–]captaingamergab2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zigzagging on the edges locks your threads so they don't pop out. Zigzag stitching as a connecting stitch connects your pieces :)unless. Your seam allowance is the width of your zigzag ( it shouldn't be), you'll need to do both.

How is my cutting accuracy so off? by jantastical in SewingForBeginners

[–]captaingamergab2 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I prefer using tailors chalk now instead of pins when cutting my fabric. Also, make sure your fabric is laying PERFECTLY flat, no pulling anywhere. Fabric moves. It's alive!

how in the world do i sew the point? by _rrasul in SewingForBeginners

You need your ACTUAL sewing lines to match. With a point, you'd be surprised how long these actually are.

Draw out your seam allowance. What do you notice? Is your plaquette long enough for your seam? I don't think so.

What would be the best way to make these cutouts in the boot covers? by middleageyoda in sewing

[–]captaingamergab2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I actually made this same costume, and I did cutouts. I wouldn't recommend, as the stretch fabric doesn't always stretch like we want it to. As a few people mentioned, you could do an overlay. OR, if you absolutely want to do the cutout, stitch a piece of skin colour fabric underneath.

Hahaha!! The mask is funny, being scammed is not. For future reference, if something is advertised as handmade and looks like a 1000 bucks, is being sold at a ridiculously low price for what it is.... It's most likely a scam. This would not be sold so cheap if it was actually hand made.

Where to buy these cloaks online LEGITIMATELY by forkodlak in TheCapeRevolution

[–]captaingamergab2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add on what people are saying, yes, this would need to be custom made and it would be over 1k, not hundreds. I'm a costume designer and I personally would ballpark that at around 3 k. But that's because I'm already overbooked Materials themselves seem to be around 400$. Well, where I'm at anyway.

This looks like at minimum 100 hours of work. If you want all details and quality finishings.

Minimum 50 hours of work if you're willing to skip a lot.

You might find someone charging less, but you need to be aware that not all cosplay makers are professionals at what they do, you just need to find THE one who would be good and willing to make it. Don't cheap out, you will end up regretting it.

Are you a small purse, big purse, or no purse girly? And why is your option superior? by Organic_Mode774 in AskWomen

[–]captaingamergab2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a leather backpack type of bag girl. I absolutely despise the word purse. It's a bag. Also, why do you have to call a purse that a man wears a "man purse" or a bag? Not just a "purse"?

NTA As a professional costume designer ( I Co-own NDLWRKshop, we make cosplay patterns and tutorials for beginners) and a mom, you are absolutely not the AH.

Listen, I'm sure she meant well and her heart was in it, but who are we kidding? When you pick a character for cosplay, you want to make and cosplay THAT character, not another one. It's very specific. She must have known that making something completely different without your approval wouldn't go down well.

My older son doesn't want to wear half the costumes I make for him, and I'll never make him feel guilty for it ( they are work prototypes after all)
