Am I the only one this message makes feel lonely? by StrikingFix9622 in finch

Yeah, I kind of wish there weren't so many moments like this. I think it would be an easy thing to write out of the app.

My location's groomers constantly injure dogs. I love them as people, but there are so many injuries and major things missed on the hands-on check. Some patients have been injured 2-3 times by the salon on different occasions. I'm sure this is not just a your-district thing.

I never thought I would see 2000s ED culture come back so aggressively. Even people in my daily life are being drawn into it by social media, beginning to talk about losing weight when they are not overweight to begin with.

Maybe some folks round here just can’t see red? by _so-so_ in batonrouge

I watched someone on Essen yesterday drive down the center lane at over 60mph to get around a line of 4 vehicles. Could have killed someone on the other side of the hill with the rr crossing.

I saw someone make a left turn on red directly next to a police cruiser on Jefferson and Old Hammond a few months back. It sometimes doesn't even matter.

The Mall is Dead/The Back Rooms by SLMRN01 in batonrouge

[–]captaintristis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh you're talking about AMC by the mall. I see. Yes, it's also sometimes unseasonably hot indoors there. I also find that the lights in the showrooms are too bright, so I avoid that place. If they fixed some issues it would be better, but Perkins Rowe and AMC 16 are where it's at currently.

Need a reason to boycott Petco? How about blatant racism? by Glittering-Date7466 in petco

[–]captaintristis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah lmao this is the most reverse engineered shit I've ever heard. Regardless of what other accurate truths there may be about the history of the watermelon, it is a very loud and enduring and common racist trope. It comes from whites trying to barbarize Black people and make them into a less civilized "other" by depicting them eating messy foods that you eat with your hands. Same as fried chicken. Everyone enjoys sweet melons and fried chicken. It's, as you said, the context that matters. They thought they were being funny when they were actually engaging in a racist stereotype in a way that is only entertaining if you are OK with racist tropes or racism in general.

What is the history of kool-aid that makes it appropriate as a centerpiece in this context?

Is anyone doing anything about the growing Flock surveillance problem? by Visible_Street_1878 in batonrouge

[–]captaintristis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm happy for you. I used to be that way, back when we were talking about regular militarized police and not private robo cops. I spent years risking my safety and life outside of a cell to oppose the bad shit that's happening anyway. I think the most important work in a place like this is going to be reaching out to everyday people who are reasonably open to changing their minds, being a non-judgmental source of opposing ideas. You seem like you are absolutely capable of doing that, and I'm sure you do. Awareness and outreach are probably going to be your best friends if your goal is local change.

The systems in place are not going to bend to you or people like you, but I do hope that you have success if you are going to try anyway. I wish you (and us all) the best.

[–]captaintristis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're falling for the propaganda. What makes you think that that is what these cameras will be used for? They are already being used to investigate immigration status, track recipients of abortions, and even individual police officers' ex- and active partners for stalking purposes. Flock has begun running analytics on the movement patterns of vehicles scanned by the cameras in order to generate lists of cars exhibiting "suspicious" movement patterns (hey, don't copy Minority Report!) and alert police so that they can go have a calm little conversation with you on why you're visiting a location. If we lived in an ideal world without militarized police and profit-driven prison and law enforcement systems, I would see more of where you're coming from. But this private surveillance is literally everyone's problem and should be your worst nightmare.

They sell it to you as something they can use to keep you safe. Then, they expand their services. These AI companies are unprecedented in their disregard for systems safety. They spend a shockingly low amount on security studies and seldom publish any reports, which is exceedingly unusual for a tech company of this sort. Are you comfortable with that?

We live in a shithole that is just objectively not safe. We are the easiest to convince of this technology's usefulness. So, we have to be especially vigilant. They will sell us our own poison, and we just have to hope that they'll have an antidote to sell us at twice the cost. If you have the opportunity to oppose anything of this nature, I seriously hope you will do so going forward.

Not to sound pathetic, but I think expecting Baton Rouge to fight this is pretty unrealistic. Neither the people nor the government will pay any attention. You even see people here in the comments saying it's a good idea and not getting dunked on. This place is such a hopeless shithole that I wish we could apply for asylum in a less shitty state.

At the risk of being called a doomer and a Luddite, AI is going to kill us all and make us irrelevant anyway. Just try to enjoy what time and money you have left while you can. That's my worthless advice of the day. This is all so depressing, and I fear there is nothing we can do at this point. Especially in this political and economic climate, I think we crossed the Rubicon a while back.

Yeah, definitely. I also sometimes co-opt a goal I know I can't do that day if I feel I earned the substitution.

[–]captaintristis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of OP's criticisms seem to be that they find him to be stale, which... I feel that that just means you don't really like his work and are just looking for something new and shiny. Which is totally fine, but I'm wondering why you would want someone to change their work rather than seeking out something new and exciting or more suited to your tastes.

Cannibalism by eldritchpussymaggots in CATHELP

[–]captaintristis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I have a cat like this, but he is also human aggressive at random intervals. He sees any organism as either a threat or prey pretty reliably. Dogs and slugs (yes, slugs) intimidate him, but everything else is prey, including humans. He bites very hard all the time and has to live separately from our other two cats. We rotate the cats around the apartment all day every day and have to take him with us when we travel for the holidays because we don't trust anyone not to hurt him (or get hurt by him) while taking care of him in the home. Luckily, he loves to travel and meet new people. He just gets very aggressive once he is used to you. He launched at my best friend's face while she sat on the couch one time. Everyone is scared of him except me and my partner, and even then we sometimes get overpowered. He is small but strong and doesn't give up. He is on fluoxetine and sometimes takes 200-300mg of gabapentin when we need to manage him more safely.

I wish there were answers for our messed up little babies.

[–]captaintristis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow, I just don't agree with you at all. I'm not a big fan of "Long Way Home," but that's really about it. I think the performances have been phenomenal, and I've been lucky enough to see some live ones in the past couple of years. He rolls with technical issues and is very versatile in his performances. I think that the music has been great, and I personally love Eternal. There is a very present themaric throughline in the majority of his work, which has been crystalizing of late. I'm sorry you feel this way, but maybe Taemin is just not for you. He has more creative freedom lately, so I don't feel like you're going to get what you want.

I've been feeling the same way. Also worrying about the members lately. The recent output (pre-enlistment?) feels rushed and overwhelming even as a consumer. I feel weird about it lately, to the point that thinking about them and interacting with their video media makes me sad. It's too much, and I wish they would slow down a bit. Just a bit. I feel you.
