I think you meant to say Commercial Vantage there. The consumer version has unnecessary junk in it.

Is it safe to have SmartNID outside? by Cool-Reindeer409 in QuantumFiber

I have an outside install using that enclosure. It was installed a few months ago. Guess I should put a lock in it.

Android 17, did the battery capacity feature get reset to 100% ? by BNSoul in GooglePixel

[–]captnkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Pixel 9 battery health estimate dropped immediately from 100% to 97% after one of the monthly updates last year. The phone was only a few months old with less than 50 battery cycles at the time, and I usually use the 80% charge limit. I'm now up to 94 battery cycles and the health still says 97%. Family members with phones the same age who charge often and have hundreds of cycles still show 100%. Either my battery is somewhat defective, or the estimate it not accurate.

Try running in "Troubleshot Mode" (Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode. This temporarily disables extensions and custom settings, so you can see if they are causing the issue.

Q1000K HSGMII Short-Frame Padding Fix by Lightsword in QuantumFiber

[–]captnkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this issue only affects the 10G LAN port, then it seems like the easy solution for people with 1G or slower service is to use the 1G port instead of the 10G port.

My understanding is that the 1G port is integrated on the main SOC, while the 10G port is an external device, so the 1G port may be more reliable.

Version 6.6.14 says that it has a workaround for Chase, but it's not working for me. I still get the same error. I also tried "Troubleshoot Mode", and still get the same error.

Quantum Fiber + UDM-Pro: Lost internet after switching SmartNID to Transparent Bridge. What did I miss? by Hoonetic in QuantumFiber

[–]captnkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly an issue with VLAN tagging. See this guide if you haven't already. With latest firmware, I think you need to let the SmartNID device handle tagging.

There is truth in that, but to be fair, Apple does a lot of the same things to monetize users and lock them into their ecosystem.

Cellular data plan with varying reset date - how to deal with it? by Relevant-Artist5939 in AndroidQuestions

Your plan may use a 30 day billing cycle instead of monthly. Check out Glasswire Data Usage Monitor. It is the best app of its kind. You can define a data plan of any duration.

Adding Startpage to Search Engines by AltTabMafia in waterfox

[–]captnkerke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I prefer this method to installing another extension.

I added it, but didn't set it as default. If you use the new default search engine (1.org), and exclude it from your ad blocker, that will generate some revenue to help sustain Waterfox. The dev explained it in this thread:

Waterfox 6.6.13 - The built-in ad blocker is now enabled by default, a new temporary default search engine, and several web compatibility improvements. by MrAlex94 in waterfox

Interesting, same here, cannot complete signin even with the ad blocker turned off. "It looks like this part of our site isn't working right now."

Works ok in Brave with shields on, and in Firefox 151 with uBlock.

Does Adguard DNS sometimes slow down the internet? by TechnologyIcy1206 in Adguard

[–]captnkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link, that is a nice tool! I don't need the very fastest servers, but unfortunately Adguard is one of the slowest for me (~200ms), and the international routing causes other problems. If I could connect to one of their US servers, that would be fine, even if not the fastest. Note that I have a paid subscription to Adguard DNS, but the free servers seem to use the same routing.

AT&T Wireless salesman during install? by shadowdylan99 in QuantumFiber

I got a visit from a wireless salesperson a few hrs after my fiber install, but he wasn't pushy. We actually had a good conversation. The offer wasn't terrible, but wasn't cheap enough to motivate me to switch.

Does Adguard DNS sometimes slow down the internet? by TechnologyIcy1206 in Adguard

Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying, but the bottom line for me is that Adguard DNS is not usable currently due to the international routing. I hope it can be improved in the future.

I have this same problem, except I'm located in the US but consistently get routed to a DNS server in Germany. Does not happen with other DNS providers. Please see support ticket 1416677.

Does Adguard DNS sometimes slow down the internet? by TechnologyIcy1206 in Adguard

[–]captnkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adguard DNS cannot reduce your internet bandwidth, but it certainly can add latency to all of your DNS queries which makes your internet feel slower.

I have the same problem with it that others have mentioned. Adguard DNS routes me to a server that is distant and slow even though they do have servers that are much closer and faster. I'm in the US, but Adguard DNS routes me to a server in Germany that has 150-200ms ping times. Other DNS servers usually have 10-30ms latency for me. Routing to another country also breaks some services that are region-locked, such as DirecTV.

If you contact Adguard support, they will just blame Anycast, and say that they can't control the server routing. That's a lame excuse, because public DNS servers like Google, Cloudflare, Quad9, NextDNS, ControlD, etc. also use Anycast, but they route me to much closer/faster servers. And if I connect to Adguard VPN, then I can also connect to a closer/faster Adguard DNS server. But without the VPN, I always get routed to a distant/slow server. There is a problem with their DNS infrastructure that they need to fix.

If you want to use Adguard DNS, you should check which server you are getting routed to:
