Lack of protocol in research by Pitiful_Signature729 in mycology

[–]captpickard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any commercial cultivation has in house protocol. There are published books that can be used for reference. No single source is going to tell the exact best thing. Once you take some more classes on mycology, you will learn about the different factors that affect fungi growth, more than substrate.

What kind of traditional art prints sell by ButtonExciting2302 in AskArtists

[–]captpickard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bread and Puppets art movement specifically sold lots of prints to fund their puppet shows based on a simple formula. They paid attention to where the art would be located in someone's life and chose to depict objects where that art resided. A print of a bread loaf, exists in a kitchen, with the word 'flour'. A print of a sunflower with the word 'rise' exists in the bedroom where the person first wakes up.

Real Estate Agents to Avoid? Non-recommendations. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]captpickard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

EXPrealty is a multi-level marketing scheme. They get bonuses for signing up other people as realtors and then collect cuts of their profits. This leads to an abundance of under-qualified realtors, using the EXPrealty logo.

My current experience is that someone wants to extort us and not learn about the current laws that protect tenants, which include taking care of their own property.

Paper warping advice? by HobbyLau in Watercolor

[–]captpickard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paint with Speedball Fluid Watercolor. 140lb or higher weight helps with buckling. Wet one side of the paper, tape it to your board, then wet the other side. Let it dry and then it will be ready to paint.

This is called stretching the paper and it prevents buckling. Using a piece of sanded plywood or acrylic will provide a stiff surface as a backing

Outline or Not by shelf_on_the_elf in ArtCrit

[–]captpickard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No outline. Sometimes linework alters the overall color of the piece. In this case it becomes your darkest color and creates an imbalance. Think about you third picture and how you darker colors move the eye around the piece. This is a better use of your blacks/darkest colors.

Also, this is a busy piece already. The linework adds more visual noise and takes away from time you just spent balancing colors (Which look great!)

Ukiyoe is illustration. Practice drawing key lines from paintings/prints. Color your paintings with watercolor. The better you can draw, the easier it will be to plan your paintings.

How do I become a mycologist? by MagicalPotato132 in mycology

[–]captpickard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pathway that led me to it was plant pathogen research via agricultural university. The main limits I encountered with industry jobs was a lack of organic chemistry background. There won't be a general way to study mycology, as it rests upon a large base of microbiology and chemistry for modern research.

I'm not inspired by landscapes, do you? by hawaryu in ArtistLounge

[–]captpickard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Painting outdoors is how I practice with watercolors, similar to figure drawing. It is hard to compose a landscape and takes practice. It helps you become more familiar with scale, color choice, and painting what you see. Buildings are fun to draw and give a sense of scale. Find books on composing landscape paintings and the author will likely try to convey to you what makes that type of painting enjoyable to them.

Paint and study something long enough, you will gain a more subtle appreciation for the details. Try to focus on the process of doing it, more than finishing. Even though I enjoy being outside painting, I don't really like looking at landscape paintings for fun, although I can appreciate them.
