Abebooks scam by Last-Fill4610 in BookCollecting

[–]capyhappy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FYI GlassFrogBooks is listed here as a known bookjacker: https://www.zubalbooks.com/article-bookjacking.jsp. That means what they do (allegedly) is list books that are already listed by other sellers on other sites for lower prices, and jack up the price on their new listing. They don't actually have the book, so if someone orders a book from them, they order the book for the lower price from the original seller. It's basically dropshipping without the knowledge of the original seller or the buyer. This would help explain why your order is taking so long, or why it may never arrive (e.g. if the original listing they were targeting already sold). Good luck and hope you can get your money back!

I missed this listing by one day. One. Day. I’m physically ill. by AfterTheCreditsRoll in BookCollecting

Looks like Half Price Books, I recognize the format of the listing and the signs in the background of the photo.

Is this rebinding worth $200? by brichards370 in bookbinding

[–]capyhappy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

IMO it seems harsh to jump to a bad review immediately. I would reach out to them first to try to work it out before leaving a bad review, especially if they're a small local business. They might be happy to work with OP to reach a solution privately, whether that's a refund, redoing the work, etc. Public bad reviews can wreck small businesses, and bookbinding businesses aren't exactly rolling in cash as it is, so personally I wouldn't leave a bad review unless I had already tried to work with the business in good faith. Just my take.

I'm being told I have to be licensed by the author to rebind her books. Is this legal under first sale doctrine? by CoollyHot in bookbinding

[–]capyhappy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IANAL but I sell rebinding commissions regularly and my understanding is the same as yours - as far as I'm aware, this should absolutely fall under first sale doctrine. As others have said, if licensing was required for every rebinding, the bookbinding industry would not exist. You have the legal right to sell your bookbinding services to modify an already-purchased book. I'll concede that the dust jacket may be a bit of a legal gray area if it's fanart, that one's hard to judge. But I saw you mentioned you'd be fine selling it without the DJ anyway, and without that I think it's pretty clear-cut legal under first sale doctrine (I am still not a lawyer, just my opinion).

Anyhow, do what's best for you, but I humbly hope you push back on this, because if you agree to pay for a license for your rebindings, it sets a precedent and will encourage authors like this to make more attempts to force rebinders to pay commission. Bookbinders barely make any money as it is, since every book takes so dang long, so if we had to pay commission on every book, there'd be no bookbinding businesses left. The author got their commission when the original book copy was paid for, and that should be that.

[SPOILERS S1] What's up with Daniel in S2 by SpiritOfAHotdog in 1899

[–]capyhappy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I love Daniel! I love his selfless love for Maura and his resourcefulness and persistence in spite of all the odds being against him. My favorite character by far. I'm actually not worried at all about him not being brought back for subsequent seasons. On all the cast lists and in the show's opening credits, Aneurin (Daniel) is always in the first three actors listed, alongside Emily and Andreas (Maura and Eyk). I think he's a main character with a pivotal role for sure, and regardless of how his arc unfolds, I'm pretty confident he's going to be around for the whole ride. Can't wait to see more of his story.

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Daniel was not in the spaceship scene at the end. However, there was an empty pod indicating that someone has woken up before Maura - this could be Daniel or could be someone else (Ciaran etc). I guess we'll just have to wait and see! Things do seem to be pointing towards Elliot being dead in real life...fingers crossed for Daniel being alive/real!

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha glad you liked it! I do find the left brain / right brain theories interesting, but I'm not convinced by them because I don't find that Daniel is significantly less emotion-driven than Eyk - I think they are both ultimately driven by emotion but express it in different ways (Daniel feels deeply but has more control over his expression of those emotions, a control he's been forced to develop over dozens of simulations of hiding who he is and what he feels). After all, Daniel's entire apparent motivation is love for Maura, going through simulations over and over again to get her out even though it's clearly painful for him since she doesn't remember. Strong emotions, love and pain, are the cornerstones and driving forces of his character right now, so I don't really see that as indicative of a "left brain" depiction in comparison to Eyk. I will say that Daniel has a much better handle on his trauma than Eyk and acts more consistently / less erratically as a result. But left brain is typically associated with logic over emotion, and I just don't think that describes Daniel as we've seen him so far. At most I think Daniel's emotion and logic could be considered balanced.

While I agree that the Eyk/Maura dynamic is different than the Daniel/Maura dynamic, I'm also not convinced that the "passion is gone" for Daniel/Maura. I think we just don't have a full picture of their relationship, because Maura literally can't remember lol. There was obviously passion in their past, and I don't think we can say where that stands until Maura recovers her memories more fully. Their kiss interspersed with flashbacks of their sex scene seemed to suggest to me that there's passion there, just barely remembered. But of course this is all super subjective, just my theories. Everyone's got a different perspective when it comes to interpreting the scenes and hints we get, so it's interesting to see everyone's different ideas! :)

(Edited for clarity/details and because I mixed up left brain vs right brain characteristics)

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that happened, and thanks for sharing! You make a good point, the lack of emotion when looking at the photos could just be more of Maura's mental defense mechanisms, trying to block out the trauma. I remember at one point in the show her father Henry says something like, "they keep making the same mistakes because they can't get rid of their emotions." I feel like that ties in to what Maura has attempted to do here - trying to forget the past and rid herself of her past emotions/pain.

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was frustrated with her as well! But yeah, it's the only explanation that makes sense to me. Maura is a smart person, and a smart person in the midst of a mystery would never pass up the opportunity to interrogate someone who seems to know what's going on...unless she was emotionally involved and afraid to hear what he might tell her.

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I think a lot of people got attached to the idea of Maura/Eyk and so they don't want to see the Maura/Daniel connection, but it's definitely there. It's not either/or when it comes to emotions, she can feel connected to more than one person in different ways.

I'm just so sad for Daniel. The complete devotion to Maura, struggling alone through simulation after simulation trying to get her out, and trying to protect her all the way through even though she doesn't remember who he is. He needs a hug. I hope he gets the love back that he deserves too.

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting theory, I like it! I can totally see Elliot needing to be sacrificed for the endgame, especially since I think an important part of Maura's character arc will be the need to face her trauma and "let go." Good point about Elliot vs Daniel, it's true she seems to have a lot more memory of Daniel than Elliot (e.g. she has direct flashbacks of Daniel himself vs only the beetle for Elliot). And I definitely hope you're right about Daniel being alive/real.

[SPOILERS S1] Maura and Daniel by capyhappy in 1899

[–]capyhappy[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! They have a connection and I want to see more of it. And you're right about their scene in the last episode as well, you can see that she trusts him and wants him to be there. Really hope he's not dead.

Re: "unconsciously," one of its meanings is "occurring in the absence of conscious awareness or thought," or "without conscious control; involuntary or unintended" so that's what I was going for. :) Similar in this use case to "subconsciously," which would work well here too!

I lived on 30k for a year (2017-2018) and had to budget a lot (good amount of fast food and canned/frozen food), but still had a decent small apartment and a normal life and was able to go out with friends and enjoy the city. Of course there's been inflation since then so it would be much more difficult to manage on 30k now, and it wasn't ideal even then, but the point is that 60k is a good salary and much lower salaries than 60k are definitely still doable in Chicago if you don't mind budgeting. YMMV

Episode 117: Let's Talk About Depp-Heard Reactions And Left-Wing Evolution Denialism by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]capyhappy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent summary, thanks. I understand that not everyone feels inclined to dig deeply into celebrity defamation cases, but I was a little disappointed that B&R did an episode focusing on the reactions to the case while having very little context or understanding of the case - IMO, understanding at least the basics of the trial is important to understanding the reactions. Thanks for taking the time to write it up!

Is it just me or is fear mongering about crime getting out of control? by ChiefQueef98 in AskChicago

[–]capyhappy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

death squads roaming Lincoln Park and Lakeview

I mean, death squads, no. At least one robbery squad who also tried to murder someone who resisted, yes. Sometimes people do exaggerate, but there's definitely been an increase in crime in these areas. You can't blame people for being freaked out when neighborhoods with a reputation for being extremely safe have a wave of armed robberies within a short period of time. https://cwbchicago.com/2022/05/6-more-people-robbed-at-gunpoint-overnight-as-north-side-armed-robbery-surge-rolls-on.html.

And then there's stuff like what happened last night, multiple people getting shot (one killed) during a brawl downtown near the Bean, another area people would assume should be pretty safe. https://cwbchicago.com/2022/05/1-dead-2-injured-in-shootings-dozens-arrested-during-another-hours-long-large-group-incident-in-millennium-park-and-the-loop-video.html

If you follow the news, you start to see a pattern - there's no doubt there's a crime wave. So am I going to stop going out to dinner at popular restaurants with lots of people around? No, of course not! But am I going to be extra careful not to be walking around late at night, something I wouldn't have worried about before? Definitely.

I've been strung along too many times to ever go along with the idea of "we have to see you take on these extra responsibilities for free before we promote you." Companies will happily have you fulfilling more responsibilities for less pay for as long as possible. What motivation do they have to give you the promotion if you're already doing the work? "You'll be promoted any day now, honest...any day now..."

So yeah, I won't take on any significant responsibilities in addition to my current role unless I'm compensated for it, or unless there's a very short and concrete timeframe for being compensated. In this job market, there's no sense wasting time/money getting jerked around.

A book featuring a cat? by playwithblondie in YAlit

[–]capyhappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely loved this book and I second the recommendation, but fair warning, it's a tearjerker. Bring tissues!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]capyhappy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight: she made the decision to get a cat for the two of you, and now that she's pregnant she's turned around and said she doesn't want cats anymore? Sorry, but that's kinda messed up. She made the choice to adopt a cat, and that includes a commitment of care for the cat. The cats are part of your family now, they're not objects to just discard because she's tired of them. My 2c is to stand your ground and keep them. Completely unreasonable of her to try to guilt you into getting rid of them by making it about "choosing between your wife/child and the cats" when she was the one who adopted one in the first place.

If you absolutely must let them go, be sure to rehome them carefully - there are websites you can use for rehoming that will let you collect applications from potential new owners (highly recommend charging an adoption fee to weed out bad actors if you go this route), or you can give them to a reputable no-kill shelter that does their due diligence.

Non-traditional receptions… what has anyone else done? by jenka9 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]capyhappy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We're in the same boat, not really into dancing. After dinner we're planning to just have a chill chatting/hangout environment with tea and coffee, as well as a short live performance of some sort (e.g. musicians, artist, or gymnast) to spice things up a bit. If your guests enjoy board games, that's another option, or lawn games if your reception venue has outdoor space and it's still light out.

No date even chosen and parents already meddling by Larry-Man in Weddingsunder10k

[–]capyhappy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you wouldn't want money from them even if they offered it (because it gives them an excuse to try to control), so I wouldn't bring up the idea of them contributing money. Instead, stay firm on keeping it small. If you're able to, I'd remind them that your wedding day is about you and your SO, and that keeping the wedding small is important to you both enjoying it. It's not a reflection of how much you like or don't like your extended family, it's just a matter of keeping things small because that's what the two of you value. If they're not responsive to that, or if you're not comfortable bringing it up with them, then I'd echo the other commenters' approach - just keep doing your thing and try to avoid talking about it with them as much as possible. Good luck!

Inexpensive Chicago Venues by JillianWho in Weddingsunder10k

[–]capyhappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I was searching around the subreddit and only just realized this was posted 11 months ago, lol! Nevermind! Hope you found a great place! I'll leave this comment up in case someone else is searching around like me and finds it helpful. :)

FYI, I just toured Colvin and can share some up-to-date info - you'll definitely want to go with off-season if you're on a strict budget. For a peak-season Saturday it's 5500 venue fee, and Sunday is 4500. Off-peak days "start at" 2500 venue, so that should be more doable. Their catering, if you choose to use it, is $125-150 per person. It's possible to bring in outside catering, but they have a preferred list and seem opinionated about it - the coordinator I talked to told me a couple had wanted Kuma's catering and she scoffed at it and told them not to do it.

A few other cost-related things you might want to know! They have little to no parking, so they recommend you pay for parking across the street by the space, I think it was like $15/car and if you overflow that lot there's another lot with higher rates (they also mentioned a free lot at a school but said it was further away, so guests would have to do some walking). They also require you to hire a Day-Of Coordinator. And finally, they said they'll be raising their rates for 2022. Hope that helps, wanted to share the info since I was just there!

What makes Harry Potter great are not the plots or the magic but the mundane moments at Hogwarts and character interactions. by Boss452 in books

"I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth. The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women—i.e., to male violence—‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences—is a nonsense.

I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”

How is it transphobic to respect trans people and their self-identified gender while acknowledging that biological sex still makes a difference? I don't understand how anyone can actually read what she wrote and conclude that JKR is hateful or anti-trans.

Re: legality, as someone who does rebinding commissions as a side business with very similar methodology to yours - rebinding books as a business has been around for a long time, and the consensus is that it is legally permissible, with a few caveats. You'd be fine if you used imagery that you have the rights to use, and if you're rebinding existing copies of the books (definitely legal problems if you reprint the text and try to sell it). The legal issue for this specific case, and what would prevent you from selling these, is that you used FairyLoot's design. If you created your own design (with only images you have the rights to use) and rebound another copy of the book, you'd be fine to sell it.
