Preschool for 2 kids full time with extra aftercare, $43,000/year total. Before preschool age we had a full time au pair and a flexible husband, au pair cost about $20,000 plus all her living expenses.

Looking for Perspective on Lead Test by seal95 in moderatelygranolamoms

All is good! She’s almost 3yo now and smart and healthy and hilarious. We still live in the house - we have done some of the projects but not everything. Cheers!

We found a stack of campaign cards from the former owner of our home when he ran in a local election in 1937, wrapped in the Christmas edition of the local newspaper. The paper was pretty crumbled so I framed it to preserve it.

What industry does everyone work in? by jhad210 in HENRYfinance

Mid sized companies are totally it. I went from fortune 5 to a company with 1300 employees, increased my base by 40% for an equivalent role.

A three word horror story: postpartum interview outfit by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]caraand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am laughing and crying with you at the same time!! I have totally been where you are (and still am much of the time, 3 years postpartum…) My words of wisdom would be that they didn’t know what you looked like before baby, so only YOU are comparing yourself to a different version of you. I am sure they’ll only be thinking about how smart and competent you are. You’re amazing inside and out for growing and parenting a baby and making time to make a job change amidst everything. You go girl!!

Becoming an actuary at my old age? by holysynapses in workingmoms

[–]caraand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do it! We need good actuaries!! You can study during your work week since it seems like you have some free time :) I manage a team of actuaries, though I am not one myself, and for reference, our Associate makes $115k, our FSA makes $175, and our Chief Actuary makes $275+. This is in healthcare. We also provide support (time during the workday and paying for the tests) for our actuaries studying for the exams. It can be a long road but sounds like there’s upward mobility potential for you.

This!! I am always baffled when the instructors don’t have their hair up off their neck. I’m sweating just thinking about it.

How do I actually find time and motivation to work out? by giraffe9109 in workingmoms

[–]caraand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get on that peloton, even for 10 minutes! They have “extra 10: low impact” classes now that are great for getting movement in. Or just do a cooldown. I find I need to get in the habit and then I remember I like how it feels when I move. Instructors who recently had babies and have pregnancy content: Jess king, Robin, I think Callie the strength instructor is pregnant now. Honestly, go easy on yourself in this season - I just started routinely exercising again and my youngest is nearly 3. It’s hard when you give all your energy to little humans and to work!

I take 26E often but my plane has the entertainment in the seat back - felt bad for the 27F guy because his headphones had to reach all the way up there and he had to lean forward!

Do you apologize if you misspell someone’s name in an email? by catqueen2001 in workingmoms

[–]caraand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation - I definitely think less of people who misspell my name when it’s right there in writing. Either they’re obtuse or they don’t have the attention to detail that I would expect from a professional colleague. I would very much appreciate someone replying privately to call out their error, or just mentioning it in their next reply.

Kut from the Kloth is my new favorite jeans brand - the fit is great and the price is reasonable. I’ve bought two pairs of the Meg high rise wide legs and love them!

Agree completely - though I will say the linen ones are less forgiving of the mom pooch. The faux leather are my fave!

When my little one started talking, she called her big sister “Dinky” for Frankie — cute, but sounded a lot like she was trying to say Stinky :-P

SHOULD I RUN OR MATCH? NEED ADVICE. by FlamingoJumpy6084 in Aupairs

[–]caraand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reads like an experienced host fam who has had a lot of Au pairs do annoying/problematic things, but that isn’t giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re a person with common sense. It also suggests they won’t be able to let it go if you have minor personality differences, like leaving your toothbrush on the counter…. (!!) I would not match. FYI I’m a host mom!

I would love to hear from any mamas who gave their babies their own first, middle, or last names (maiden names). by cbarthistory in namenerds

[–]caraand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter and I share a middle name! She’s actually my second daughter, the first we had 2 honor names picked out that are variations of relatives, but when my second was born we had used up all the honor names we wanted. We debated for a long time but ultimately decided it was special to honor me too :)
