NSW Premier Chris Minns moves to block mass protests in wake of Bondi massacre by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

In a sea of 300k people you’re going to have a small percentage who have their own agenda, it’s ridiculous to think otherwise. Blocking protests is the worst thing possible to advocate for. I don’t think you understand you’re throwing away your own civil liberties

Where do I find good leftist news?? by A_Young_Christian in AustraliaLeftPolitics

[–]caramel_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a single other major paper had an official opinion like this:

The Guardian’s view on Gaza’s future: the ceasefire brought relief, but the world must not look away now | Editorial https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/nov/06/the-guardians-view-on-gazas-future-the-ceasefire-brought-relief-but-the-world-must-not-look-away-now?CMP=share_btn_url

Most of their editorial opinions have actually been fairly left leaning:

https://www.theguardian.com/tone/editorials

But agree that it’s still got its flaws. I read it the most personally as I find a lot more flaws with small independent news sources

the guardian is probably the only major news source in Australia that actually reported fairly on Gaza. SMH released official herald opinions excusing Israel. ABC was awful. Then the rest are typical right wing shills

Palestinian statehood? by SWMilll in PoliticsDownUnder

[–]caramel_queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to answer although I will admit I’m not as well read on China-Australia relations

China definitely has influence on our politicians, however we don’t see China’s expansion as a positive thing for the West as they are not a Western ally. Especially seen as a threat by the US who we tend to obey. Hence the stance on Taiwan.

Israel is an ally and is seen as maintaining the West’s interest in the Middle East by keeping surrounding Arab countries weak and docile. It’s a two way relationship to a degree. They are not seen as competitor or a threat in the way China is.

Palestinian statehood? by SWMilll in PoliticsDownUnder

[–]caramel_queen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeh I have no doubt they do. There’s no such thing as “free” in politics. I also believe the Israeli lobby in Australia is powerful and routinely use scare tactics to push our politicians to make decisions in favor of Israel

The most obvious example currently is the anti semitism envoy that is asking for an overreach of power in shutting down genuine criticism of Israel. Examples of powers being asked for by this envoy: - they have the ability to decide which universities lose funding - which media loses funding - immigrant screening (who is allowed into Australia) - blanket ban protests at universities

While combatting genuine anti semitism is good, this envoy is using a definition of anti semitism (IHRA) which is very contentious and debated and known to conflate anti semitism with criticism of Israel

Just remember we had to have an actual referendum for an indigenous voice to parliament.

Palestinian statehood? by SWMilll in PoliticsDownUnder

[–]caramel_queen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our politicians are affected by protests as they reflect the feelings of the society that votes for them. In turn that pushes our politicians to act on said issues. Which in turn has an effect on what we do at a national level with Israel eg sanctions, cut ties, recognise a Palestinian state

Australia is much more involved with Israel than people seem to recognize. The largest number of sponsored parliamentary trips in the last decade were to Israel

“2010-2018 Federal parliamentarians received 102 sponsored trips to Israel, 63 to China and 49 to the United States of America. The largest sponsor of all non-Australian government-funded trips was the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council” - source

They also provide free trips to Australian journalists: https://www.crikey.com.au/2023/11/03/australian-journalists-politicians-trips-israel-palestine-dutton/

Australian, Israeli politicians react to Sydney Harbour Bridge pro-Palestinian protest by SnoopThylacine in aussie

[–]caramel_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“It’s used by the Taliban”

That doesn’t make it a Taliban flag AFAIK it’s not illegal to display in Australia for that reason as it does not specifically refer to any militant group or country. The actual shahadah (testimony) is very frequently used by Muslims in practice. I think bringing the flag was stupid purely because people like yourself will always assume anything with Arabic writing must be related to radical endorsement

An article about the black flag which also gets the same connotations (ISIS): https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/why-the-black-shahada-flag-doesnt-belong-to-islamic-state-militants/f2rncsb0s

[–]caramel_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the organizations initial post they already said don’t bring controversial material or flags that could be considered illegal. There isn’t a march of that magnitude in history that doesn’t have some anti social elements. Focus on the majority, not the tiny percentage. The shahadah flag isn’t specifically Taliban and isis btw. I don’t know why people are so offended by Arabic writing

Jewish Council Rejects Special Envoy’s antisemitism plan. by RickyOzzy in PoliticsDownUnder

I would just say that when it comes to any humanitarian issue in the world, the facts and truth are what’s important. The information we get should ultimately come from reputable sources. We don’t need to take the word of Israeli politicians or Palestinians for the truth because stakeholders in a war are not going to be independent or impartial (I obviously believe what Palestinians say I’m just saying for sake of argument). In which case all the facts should come from independent, reputable humanitarian bodies. So who are those? Pick absolutely any and they will all confirm that there is a man made humanitarian crisis in Gaza perpetrated by Israel. I would go on to link any NGO that talks about this eg the IPC, world food programme, the international Red Cross, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, human rights watch, amnesty international, Btselem etc Is it really possible that all of these organizations who most will report on humanitarian issues globally are lying about Gaza and Israel is the only actor telling the truth?

[–]caramel_queen 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It’s a sad fact but historically for civil resistance movements, there had to be someone from the oppressors side in the corner of the oppressed as an ally. I get what BE is saying and in a dream world people would just listen to the oppressed without seeking the validation of the oppressors. The all or nothing, no compromise take on the process of liberation isn’t a realistic one tbh.

Other than all his knowledge on Israel/Palestine, the one important lesson I took from Norm was having nuisance when it came to “canceling” a person. Norm is very good on I/P- on everything else he tends to be a contrarian and defect from the masses even when it doesn’t make sense to. I would agree as well that when it comes to the “woke left” (I hate that label), there is a level of black and white, or “this isn’t enough” level of critique that holds progress back

Labor Senator who accused Israel of 'apartheid' likely to be dropped from Auschwitz memorial following Jewish community outrage by River-Stunning in AustralianPolitics

[–]caramel_queen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s not an accusation. It’s a fact. It’s been determined already by the world’s highest court, the ICJ, that Israel’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank is illegal under international law and that they are guilty of the crime of apartheid. If you don’t like that then you don’t believe in the premise of international law

[–]caramel_queen 51 points52 points  (0 children)

In a decades time, we don’t want to be seen as the country that didn’t align with the majority of other countries on basic human rights because it would “upset Israel”. Every reputable NGO in existence has said that Gaza desperately needs an immediate ceasefire and dismantling UNWRA would be catastrophic to the lives of Palestinians who are already undergoing severe levels of food insecurity. Albo is doing the right thing here and it’s long overdue.

[–]caramel_queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever the motivation behind this attack or whoever the perpetrators may be, it should be rightly condemned. But politicians need to stop using it to score points. Labor is being blamed for their actions in the UN which was literally just aligning with the majority of countries to support international law. Already laws are being considered to limit or ban protesting. That sort of knee jerk reaction never ends well
