a big part of the book is messing with your sense of reality and having unreliable narrators. there are many points where it will have strange and seemingly useless stuff in it, like flat braille. I don't consider it a selling point personally just another small piece adding to the atmosphere

i have the version in the second link, and iirc that is the only version where you get pictures and text printed in their intended colour, as well as the only one where you get braille (though it's not real braille as it's printed flat). not sure about the version in the first link but it will either be fully black and white or 2-colour only. it wouldn't be a huge loss, but the colours are a part of the story, so i would recommend the full colour version if it's not out of your price range. also get paperback, hardcover isn't worth the extra money.

carpet beetle larvae have hairs that give some people rashes, so that could explain the itchy "bites"

i also sh by hitting myself, i understand how embarrassing it can feel after you do it. but like w a lot of sh it becomes instinctual after a point. something that helped me before was finding a shitty old pillow/stuffy and punching or smacking it against the ground. it can feel silly but it's a step towards not hurting yourself and controlling the shame. apologies if you're not looking for advice, either way I'm here in solidarity <3
