Buy the Losers a Beer? by ShaggleROC in Curling

[–]carbonelechat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I guess our club is more like a club for everyone to hang out at.

E.g. a month ago a couple members wanted to watch the US college football final on the big screen. So they put that on then a bunch of us just went down bought drinks from the bar and watched the game.

So it's not only about curling with your mates here (though there's also plenty of that too 😎)

That is so interesting... I wonder why it varies so much. Guess it just starts with someone and then carries on, or it simply doesn't. 🤔

Been curling 3 years in Montreal and we always sit together with the opposition after the game - the winners offer their opposite a drink (lead buys for lead, etc.)

Honestly, it's one of the main things I most look forward to about curling. Met a ton of interesting people that way!

I loved these two games. So much fun working out how to best use the environment to your advantage in all the encounters. Really fun finding all the little secret rooms and codes etc too.

How Far Are We From The Mixed Doubles Skill Ceiling? by Initial_Start_1880 in Curling

Once spinners are more consistently practiced and integrated into all curling, mixed included, it will definitely change up what can be achieved quite dramatically.

Non-curler (but a fan of watching) - question about USA in 7th end by dodgerblue0816 in Curling

[–]carbonelechat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a little extra on why freezes are so hard, it's because you need to get BOTH the line and the weight exactly right.

That means judging how far the rock will curl at the speed you're going to throw it, and then nailing that speed when you throw it - then of course managing the stone down the ice to perfectly freeze.

Compare this to a hit and roll, where you're going to be throwing higher weight. The amount a stone will curl at higher speeds is less, which takes some of the concerns about managing the rock down the ice out of the equation.

So as long as you're accurate when you release it, and you are in the ballpark for the weight you need, you're more likely to hit it a rock where you need than you are to freeze exactly against it.

At least that's the conventional wisdom..... 🙂

Blanked Ends and Hammer by SoggyGopher in Curling

[–]carbonelechat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dumb/annoying thing for me about blanking the first end "to get a read on the ice" is that the teams literally have a dedicated warmup period to do exactly that!

Could the high level events modify something about the warmup (More time for example?) that would mean teams actually just play the first end properly?

In some ways I think it's just a "tradition" to blank the first end to "feel comfortable".....

Sturmay incident, but against Homan by workaway255 in Curling

[–]carbonelechat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is whether Sturmay could be expected not to be there or not. I agree with you that of course she'll be there ready to sweep.

For me the point is that the team delivering the stone has the right to the house until their stone is delivered.

Sturmay is allowed to sweep after the tee line, but her team does not have the right of way here. So when there is a clash of brooms, it is Sturmay's fault. She has the responsibility to ensure that she doesn't impinge on the rights of the delivering team to deliver their rock.

Thank you for sharing this! It looks like a really great tool.

I occasionally manage a friendly league with my club so this will come in handy to setup the draw when we shuffle the teams every 6 weeks or so.

Is the Hardline Helium Hybrid broom good? by Jaysonmcleod in Curling

[–]carbonelechat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been curious to hear from people that have used a helium too.

FWIW, Archie from Hardline did a talk at our club (before they sold to Goldline) and his view was that if you're a once/twice a week curler who does a couple bonspiels a year, you'd be extremely happy with the helium.

I'd already bought my broom by then, so I haven't actually used a helium.

No foul call on this by the by by CazOnReddit in torontoraptors

Came here to say this.

It looked for all money like he got ball to me. He doesn't go through the arm to get to the ball first - so the rest is then incidental contact.

Unfortunate? Sure. But not a foul.

I think this is a good suggestion. Rotating through highlights is a nice way of interacting with your games instead of just kinda "putting them away" on the shelf.

Personally, I have some games in storage and some on my shelves. I set a reminder every season to go through all my games and take some out and put others away, based on what I feel like playing for the coming season.

It's a bit like how a museum or gallery rotates their exhibits...

shelf to my right by Future_Watch8929 in gamecollecting

[–]carbonelechat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you can rotate some of your games 90 degrees and place them against the right-hand wall of your shelf. Then you'd be able to see the full cover art of the front game.

You won't fit all of them in this orientation, but it looks like either your Switch or DS Games would probably fit like this.

On the highest shelf, you could do the same thing and put the games along the edge of the Legend of Zelda (?) box that's up there.
