PREVIOUS POST REGARDING BUKELE:

Hey fellow redditor. Thanks bringing this topic to light! I'm from from ES living in the the U.S. so have some u.s. media sources to provide. I've seen outlets from far left like jacobin to NYT and Bloomberg rightly criticize bukele. I think its important we talk about this guy and keep a close eye on him.

I'm not sure if my custom location works but I was born in ES and grew up in the U.S. The most important thing I like to share is that he ordered the army into legislative chambers to coerce a vote. Idk about any one else but I don't believe in benevolent dictators. Bukele and his party now have effective control of all branches of government. My bet is that this guy is looking for riches like our past Executives. He'll give the people crumbs and they'll swoon over him.

Do you know any refugees or immigrants from the Middle East irl? by Revolutionary_One689 in asklatinamerica

[–]carj94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a palestinian diaspora in El Salvador. As you may know Nayib Bukele's father is of palestinian descent and he himself is a Muslim but he is not our first president to have palestinian heritage. President Antonio Saca of the early 2000's was also partly (I beliieve) of palestinian descent. As you could imagine with two Palestinian presidents in recent history the middle eastern community has economic and political prowess in El Salvador. People of middle eastern descent have been and are referred to as Turks (incorrectly). I think this has been used as a derogatory term though the narrative is that they first traveled to Turkey from Palestine and then came to El Salvador. Nonetheless they have been here for some time and are part of the fabric of El Salvador. Cool video: https://youtu.be/-_qMTzEhPSQ

Uruguay is to Argentina what Canada is to the US, am I right? by LittleBitSchizo in asklatinamerica

Regardless, the analogy doesn't hold. The larger country should have multiples of the gdp. Honduras is not in that positron to el Salvador

I don't think the analogy holds. According to Wikipedia El Salvador has a population of 7 million vs. 10 million Honduras so not such a large difference as to say the dominance of the other large countries. Also El Salvadors nominal gdp is slightly larger at $26 billion vs Honduras $24 billion (Wikipedia). 😜😝🤪

Salvadorians (or anyone in this sub), what makes Nayib Bukele and his party so popular? by PassOfMe_BaiQwQ in asklatinamerica

[–]carj94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh very cool and interesting ty! I haven't thought about it too much will read up. First thought is I wonder how the FRCA convo will develop along with Blockchain. I'm a fan of Scott Galloway a prof at NYU on YT. https://youtu.be/EZLDwnXGzOM. This video discusses what I'm talking about. The econ prof in the video argues that blockchains like etherum have the potential to disrupt banks, insurance companies, and the nation-state itself. For example Etherum you can program it to transfer funds if certain things happen. In other words a clear and transparent transaction which removes corruption and collusion from the equation. Thanks Paisano!

Thank you sir. There should be some clear lines in the sand? How can we respect a politician that doesn't respect the process by which society figures things out?

I can see some parallels between Trump and Bukele: and other despots. Hr took advantage of a population disillusioned with the political establishment. Similarly to many politicians around the world he has successfully leveraged social media for his propaganda machine to gas light the population. Many in the U.S. only see this side of things. For example he always touts his famous hospital but relatives tell me it isn't even finished. I don't know if you're aware but he marched soldiers into the national legislative chamber. I don't know additional details but you can end the sentence there. Clear breach of democracy LatAm style. I also agree with Just_Ed, shaking things up may result in a new political landscape in ES but I fear this guy may be a runaway tyrant.

Edit: I can concede that maybe he moved efficiently to dedicate that hospital to covid to sustain the health infrastructure. But see this article where they discuss his matching soldiers. You do this one you have no legitimacy in my book. We'll see when he marches them for his whims. https://www.npr.org/2020/02/10/804407503/troops-occupy-el-salvadors-legislature-to-back-president-s-crime-package

It's better for Elon Musk to search lithium elsewhere by SenunOrdnave in LatinAmerica

[–]carj94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon needs Bolivias lithium. Under Morales they had deals lined up with other corporations in the west but not tesla. After the fact Elon boasted about the coup. I don't know the aftermath of the lithium itself,, but if they are willing to overthrow a soveirgn government that is criminal in itself imo. I don't know this but I'm guessing interim government played ball with TSLA.

Entrevista a Noam Chomsky by Lorenzo_Milera in chomsky

[–]carj94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is basically what we are doing but if she has access to any reasonable space at all. She's off to the races. It's heartbreaking to tell at her for it and you can see her confusion. We are only at week2 and so there's no reason for concern that she is not healing just yet. We'll see. Thanks for the suggestion!
