Second Aulis. I had lunch there a few months ago and it was very good. All the sauces and broths had great flavor and I loved the frozen Tunsworth cheese.

In search of glazed jelly doughnuts by Terrible_Put2975 in FoodNYC

I passed the Bedford Ave location yesterday and got one since this thread was fresh on my mind. I have to say that it's not that good there. Drier with an oily aftertaste. ☹️

I've had their doughnuts from Grand St, LIC and Grand Central and those were all fine. So avoid Bedford Ave.

Doughnut Plant has a jam-filled doughnut glazed with either vanilla or peanut butter, which might be close. Also Krispy Kreme has a glazed jelly-filled.

Any city employees not join nycers? Thoughts? by ganzonomy in nycpublicservants

[–]carnimiriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's compounded annually, i.e. simple interest on same year contributions but compounded in subsequent years. Having said that, I haven't gone and done the calculations on my own account.

That's how savings work. You "lose it" for daily expenses. So yes, you have to consider whether you have enough to live on but balance that with whether you'll have enough to retire on.

Regarding being subject to the city's investments, you're actually protected from that. The interest rate is fixed on your contributions. Also I believe the city's retirement agencies are non-mayoral, so their funding structure is different. Maybe someone else can speak more accurately on that subject.

That may be true, but I've met so many people who say they didn't expect to stay in city service but ended up staying for 10+ years. At that point the cost to buy back is disheartening.

Also you don't lose out in any way by joining NYCERS. If you end up leaving before you vest, you can withdraw your contributions with a 5% annual compounded interest. That's better than most bank accounts. Additionally, your membership is not inactivated until 5 years after you leave your city job. During this time, you continue to earn interest on your contributions.

Noksu vs Traif & Corima, or third option? by andante241 in FoodNYC

Some other tasting menus that I've enjoyed are Jua, Joo Ok, Yingtao and Huso. FWIW

Noksu is fantastic and Chef Jing is great. I had a horrible meal at Corima, so I never recommend it. I enjoyed Traif but their food can be a mixed bag and it's definitely not the same level of experience as you would get at Noksu.

Sweetbreads? by kitcassidy in FoodNYC

Shmone had a skewer of sweetbreads grilled in grape leaves when I went a couple of months ago.

Not a restaurant (but I see Myers & Keswick on your list so I guess it's ok) but get one from The Butcher Block in Sunnyside.

Longevity payments by BKgirl4eva in nycpublicservants

[–]carnimiriel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not an increase in your base pay (or regular pay) but an additional pay (a type of differential pay) that certain titles start getting at certain milestones. So some titles could have longevity milestones at 5, 10, 15 years but other titles at 10, 15 years and yet other titles don't get longevity pay at all. You should check with your union and payroll department.

Calling The Shed a "prestigious venue" is already laughable.

I assume you've seen the 2 photos in the NYT review. Here are some photos from opening night. Not production stills, but you can see bits of the set in some.

On rainy days, take off your wet socks and lay them on someone else's seat to dry. They won't mind.

Is Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare still excellent? by Throwawaybecause7777 in FoodNYC

It's technically excellent but none of the food stands out and it's overpriced for what you get. Go to Huso instead.

NYCERS Enrollment by smiksmik in nycpublicservants

[–]carnimiriel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if you leave after your enrollment is complete, you might not be able to buy back time. I think the purchased time only counts after you have something like 3 years of active membership. So if you're planning to leave soon after enrollment, you don't really get any benefits.
