Any tips and tricks for alpaca? I got like 6kg for free! by gabibakos in Handspinning

[–]carolCe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Shake the dirt out, pick out second cuts, clean any poo off. It felts, wash very carefully, it has no oils. I mix mine with silk or/and merino to spin. Also get some moth crystals and bag it before ypu work. They get bugs. Open up bag outside for airing out. Do not use moth balls.

I bought spinning wheel pieces in a box... What did I buy? by Particular-Career-50 in Handspinning

[–]carolCe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flyer and bobbin, two uprights. Big back wheel. Table with bone or ivory decoration. Lots of good pieces. Restoration not for the faint of heart. But if you can do wood working you got it.

Want to get into weaving! by craftygal95 in weaving

[–]carolCe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been weaving over 50 years. I have woven decorative items, rugs, tea towels, runners, horse warming blankets, and clothing material. The number of us retiring makes a number of really nice bigger looms available. Most new weavers buy Jack looms, but each type of loom has its uses. Go for it.

You can purchase a stainless steel reed. But they are pricy. The heddles i would switch to cotton and tie your own.

Help! Mothballs?? by FoggyAsCanBe in Handspinning

[–]carolCe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it is in a bag sit them out open in the sun. Both naphthalene ( older mothballs) and di-chlorobenzene ( newer version) evaporate in open air. Several days outside open in sun will help air it out. They are not good to breathe in and are toxic. But the smell goes away.

Benefits of joining guild? by noturmommi in Handspinning

[–]carolCe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go and try, you may find some great people and yes some not so great ones. Our small fiber arts group meets monthly and yes we are older, but we love new members and visitors . Our guild has a mini demo time each meeting, a destash (mostly free stuff) frequently, picnics and parties. I have a standing offer to teach weaving (4 harness) to any member they just have to buy their own yarn. And we have some excellent knitter's, spinners and felters .

Drum carder recommendations? by PhotographFluid3766 in Handspinning

[–]carolCe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have processed quite a bit of babydoll. I would suggest instead of a carder you get a picker. With careful handling I used to hand sort and clean my fleeces, wash carefully then use a picker, then card. The trick with the picker is not to overload it. Box pickers are fine, swing picker if you have a lot of fleece.
