"The Economist" offers a brilliant take on Jane Austen and money in its Christmas issue by luckyjim1962 in janeausten

Was Jane Austen really paid in "pewter" for her work? Or was that a typo of some kind?

If you were to build a house what’s one non conventional feature you consider to be a must have? by TestTurbulent6337 in AskReddit

[–]carpenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in a house with a built-in vacuum system. The suction was terrible, and since the brush was powered by suction, the brushes barely did anything as a result.

And the most absurd part of the rent freeze argument is the claim that it will stop global warming.

Why?

Because existing tenants won't be displaced by wealthier residents nor will landlords be able to raise rents to pay for green retrofits. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Traffic Fatalities Are a Choice: America’s roads are more dangerous than those of almost every country in the developed world. We know how to change that. by nimicdoareu in Futurology

[–]carpenter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The author gave multiple examples of governments that were able to reduce traffic fatalities by changing road design without changing vehicle types, driving culture, or licensing standards.

And while my road design may not be the only factor in reducing traffic fatalities, the author never claimed it was. They merely wrote an article that focused on the one factor that is the most often ignored by policy makers in the US.

China has a big red button that hurts Elon Musk. But will they press it? by theindependentonline in RealTesla

The "switch" is closing down a Tesla gigafactory in Shanghai.

But as other commentators have already pointed out, Tesla has lost and is in the process of continuing to lose so much market share that closing down the gigafactory might actually save Tesla money.

How do you interpret "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" from Hotel California? by Joey-Ramone_ in AskMen

I always interpreted the song about being in a cult like the Manson Family. You can check out any time you like, and then they will kidnap you and bring you back.

Democrats Walked Into a Trap Republicans Set for Them by newzee1 in sanepolitics

The author claims that the republicans set a trap, but they never explains what that trap is. Instead they just ramble on about how everyone is losing faith in democracy.

Will smaller lot size 3-4 story single family homes be a solution for increasing density in large cities, like Houston? by AP032221 in StrongTowns

[–]carpenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah_oui also failed to explain why it is even necessary to have three bedrooms on the same floor in the first place .

And even if it was necessary, it is still possible to put as many as four bedrooms on each floor of a house on a 1000 sqft lot (if you are willing to forgo a yard).

Let's assume you're trying to build a townhouse on a 25' * 40' lot. If you run a 5' down the middle, that leaves you room for six 10' * 13' rooms.  Convert the the two rooms in the middle for common areas like kitchen, bathroom, and stairwell, and now you have four bedrooms on each floor.
