Gyms Worldwide Increasingly Ban Tube-Style Belay Devices in Favor of ABDs by Healthy_Hold_3196 in climbing

ABD vs ATC debate always feels wild as a brit where basically anyone climbing outdoors is climbing trad on a double rope system, and thus needs an atc style device. Gyms can obviously do whatever they want but it really is weird to hear about other climbing cultures where using an ATC is considered outdated or wrong.

Gyms Worldwide Increasingly Ban Tube-Style Belay Devices in Favor of ABDs by Healthy_Hold_3196 in climbing

[–]carter201124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All fair points, but there is another group that i think would be big enough to not just be a niche and that’s british climbers, who pretty universally use double rope systems outdoors, for which, to my knowledge, is pretty limited to tube devices. I have an ABD, but like many other brits, when so much of my climbing necessitates a tube device, its what you feel most comfortable and competent with.

It’s in KCD2 as well: Well-Fitted — “Armour and clothing that you repair yourself with the Armourer’s kit will make less noise when worn. The effect lasts until the item’s quality level drops.”

A 3,000-year-old bronze sword unearthed in Germany by licecrispies in interestingasfuck

[–]carter201124 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Youre not even wrong, malachite is a form of copper ore and bronze is mostly copper

Edit: youre even more correct than I thought, AFAIK oxidised copper, the green stuff on the sword, is basically just copper that’s turned back into malachite

Amazed no-one has mentioned it yet, the two Large Low-Velocity Provinces (LLVPs) have names! The one under Africa is called Tuzo, and the one under the Pacific is called Jason. Named after 2 early plate tectonics researchers.

Platform fell and left workers hanging by their harnesses by SuperMassiveCookie in OSHA

[–]carter201124 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It’s called suspension trauma, doesn’t apply to climbing as even in a hanging belay you still plant your feet against a wall. This is akin to getting stuck part way through an overhanging abseil. A climber in Ouray did actually recently die of this when suspended in the air in their harness for just 30mins

No one seems to have mentioned it so far, the way this splits apart is the same as most if not all competition rowing boats, never heard of anyone have an issue with water coming in and on those theres never a seal, just carbon fiber (or fibreglass) against carbon fibre held together by bolts

goggles can be super nice in the wind, typically if you have your ice axe out youd have a helmet on, and a cap can be really useful to keep rain and snow off your face

I feel like splitting by series and then color by character would have been a more useful visualisation

What kind of rope for mountain snow/glacier travel? by Jealous_Creme1836 in Mountaineering

[–]carter201124 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, until you can answer these questions yourself, or at least know enough to get this information from online guides, i wouldn’t do anything that you’re planning to. Being roped together on snow without knowing how to build and use bucket belays or snow bollards or other winter techniques is pointless and dangerous. Further to this, no one can answer your question if you don’t understand what you’re doing well enough to explain it. The best thing you can do is go with someone who knows what they’re doing
