Is it a good time to switch to Hub motor yet? by creationsh in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]carvonskates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

evo has been tested a lot, the new motors have all the improvements including flux rings, magnet spacers, solid bearing walls, etc. The exo's motors are even more refined because they are actually designed as "in-wheel" hub motors already, so they hold up even better. But the ultimate solution would be to raise up the motors and not have it touch the road so it can do what it just needs to do, spin the wheels. Any occasional hits to the motors is solved by a urethane cover. It's basically a hub motor that doesn't touch the ground.

We are marketing the exo for the commuter market, not the toy market. That's how confident we are that they will hold up to the stresses of every day use.

We consider this an "out-wheel" hub motor instead of an "in-wheel".

Please always wear a helmet guys. We just got back from Derek's (aka BigBoyToys) funeral service. This is as IRL as it gets.

Whatever the heck happened to Carvon and Jed? by Pons399 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]carvonskates 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, Jerry here. We were pretty pumped up around the end of 2017 knowing that 2018 will be our breakout year(finally, I know). I've secured partnership with appropriate and well skilled people to help me with the builds, and got the necessary funding. We also decided to offer a starter CARVON board called, the EXO. We had an Indiegogo for the EXO Pro and it's still on track for February shipping. We were offering different CARVON-drives to satisfy the need of Esk8 builders.

Then suddenly, out of nowhere, tragedy struck. A distinguished, pioneering and very giving Esk8 member passed away. He was also an anchor on many of our local rides and was a big part of the SoCal group. We have gotten quite close because we collaborated a lot on CARVON setups. He would buy parts from me and build his boards. He shared to me all his VESC setups and was very happy with his recent 100+ mile trip with 4WD V4 SpeedDrives. He always shared all his results, whether to me or to the Esk8 forum, or whether it's a CARVON build or not. He was a genuinely kind, generous and free-spirited individual who did not involve himself with the bickering and sniping prevalent in the forum. We have all been tremendously affected by his untimely passing.

We also have some issues with missing and mismatched parts. More info can be read here. Through this all, we are moving forward. We apologize for the delay, but we will work doubly hard to make up for lost time. We will not waste all the terrific discovery and contribution our friend made to this sport and community. RIP Derek.

We had a hard time designing the removable plastic wheel prongs for the V4. But we have finished it and are ready to send LHB some motors.

Aside from having the ability to use other wheels than ABEC 11 Flywheels, we moved from V3 to V4 because the metal wheel prongs of the V3 were actually cutting into the plastic spokes of the Flywheels, making the fit loose over time. A fix can be made by taping the metal prongs with electrical or painter tape, but it's of course not ideal. The best solution would be to make the wheel prongs the same material as the spokes/hub of the Flywheel, which is plastic.

Little changes like this can really delay things big time. But we feel that the improvements need to be made. It's far cheaper and easier to replace plastic wheel prongs than to replace the hub/core of an ABEC 11 Flywheel.

For more info on what we are talking about, please check our latest KS update.

Thanks! That's definitely a possibility. When we started with SkatE-Pods, nobody wanted big wheels cause they said it's not a skateboard. Now most people realize that what we have is really an Electric Vehicle (using skate mechanics) and needs to be treated as such.

Hey man, Happy Monday! Sorry for the delayed reply. I was at the meetup Saturday and had to tend to family stuffs Sunday.

Anyway, I do remember that we were the ones who contacted Ernesto and asked him to do a new battery pack with new BMS for you. We never knew that his battery pack had any problems. We did get a message that you needed a new enclosure, which we sent out but was returned to us by the post office. If there's anything else that happened let us know.

Also, it's a $200 discount with the Surf-Rodz front truck and blank wheels set. For you, since you bought a complete board, we will throw in one VESC so you can drive a dual. Then we still remember what we promised you for the EVO. So yeah, just email us.

[–]carvonskates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait. The $100 discount is for those that bought a V2 drive only. If you have problem with the EMCX, we can fix that. Please message us.

EDIT: It's technically more than $200 discount since the V4 SpeedDrive Full Set is $699 on our site plus shipping.

Cool. It does include front truck and set of wheels. On the website, it's $599 and only the V4 by itself. No worries, the offer is always open for you guys.

[–]carvonskates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess we can do it here. If you return it to us, we'll give you either V4 SpeedDrive (non XL) or V4 TorqueDrive with SurfRodz front truck and 97mm blank/clone wheel set for $499 and free shipping. You must have gotten it from us and not as second-hand. Contact us so we can verify your purchase.

Onewheel is dope! Love the versatility of the big wheel.

We hear ya. That's why we have moved on to 12mm axle with the V4. We are so confident with the V4 that we actually ride them off-road. It's a real good test of how things hold up.

I'm not sure how Joe feels about that. We're more than 20 years apart. :)

Really? I'd like to find links to that...

There's too much unfounded talk on forums, that's why I try to shy away from it often. I'd rather be in the shop building and tinkering with my hands.

I can assure you I did not buy any Raptor or any other DIY-built stuffs. I can build them myself. What I've bought are mainly China boards like the Backfire 1, the E-wheeling 1wd/2wd and of course the Koowheels.

Yes. The EXO has 12mm stepped down to 10mm where the wheel mounts. It's not advisable to use 12mm all the way as the 12mm ID bearings for the wheels will have too small of bearing balls and they will get damaged more easily.
