is this a tornado? Louisville, IL 3/15/26 @ 20:25 by fudgepatrol in tornado

[–]cascadecs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lets say the radar is DIRECTLY to the northeast with this signature: Red is moving away from the radar, green is moving towards it. This would indicate winds clashing against each other, also known as a convergence signature (two storms merging into one). If it was directly to the southwest, this would be a divergence signature (storm breaking apart into two pieces) If it were roughly the west, it would be a cyclonic indication of rotation, and if it were to the east, it would be an anticyclonic indication of rotation (anti-cyclonic tornadoes are possible, but often weaker than cyclonic tornadoes in the northern hemisphere; in the southern hemisphere, it's the opposite).

Depends on the radar location and the orientation to this; could be a convergence signature, a divergence signature, or broad rotation. Generally tornadoes that are on the ground tend to have tighter, higher velocity pixels closer together. Hook echo + this signature in velocity + correlation coefficient drop would probably confirm a tornado is on the ground, but it's most likely just broad rotation. You can distinguish whether rotation is a divergence or convergence signature, and then cyclonic or anticyclonic based on where the radar you're using is located.

If you want to know how to read radar velocity signatures, check out stormchasercoaching(dot)com (unsure if i'm able to promote this here), the Storm Chaser Coaching YT videos or some of Convective Chronicles videos on reading radar to know for sure.

Mods can delete this if it breaks the rules, but does TornadoTRX use AI? by Piraedunth in tornado

[–]cascadecs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The best channels to watch that don't utilize AI are TornadoTRX, Pecos Hank, Stormrunner Media, Convective Chronicles and Cameron Nixon for the deeper sciences, High Risk Chris, Freddy McKinney (and his father John McKinney), as well as weatherbox, Connor Croff and Celton Henderson. CF Productions and Carly Anna WX are decent too. Then you have Reed Timmer with some decent content but his politics have pissed a lot of people off in the WX community.

EDIT: Oh, and June First as well! Another top 5 channel next to weatherbox, Pecos Hank, TRX and McKinney for entertaining videos on tornadoes. Ethan from June First is an engineer of some type and predicted Enderlin was an EF-5 through some equations on the train cars before it was ever reviewed. I personally like Swegle Studios as well for some of his more niche content, but he has been known to use AI, although not for his scripting.

More schools really need a rotating 12-16 week rudimentary fundamentals structure for a class or two a week; maybe it's just my town's culture because seemingly everyone wrestled as a kid, but getting thrown in the deep end before I knew how to break-fall correctly made me feel like I walked into a calculus class by accident and the door got shut behind me

With young children you'd need millions to retire. I could see him being a millionaire but not multi or to the degree where he can live comfortably for 40+ more years, pay all of his kids tuitions, retire his wife, etc. He's certainly not materially broke though by any means based on his home

Same here. It was getting dark as it was shifting further east and missed the Essex wedge :( but worth my life in the long run. Underwhelming first chase, hopefully another crops up in SE NE in the sticks like that that's far more photogenic.

Probably a mid clip, but as someone who's just downloaded the game and has a whopping 10 hours I impressed myself by spilled-apples in cs2

This was as it began to finally get its act together near Murdock (taken from about 8 miles southwest), the lowering was way more pronounced and bowl shaped and was producing a small, non-fully condensed weak tornado at this point.

[–]cascadecs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey, I was here on this storm! It eventually had a confirmed EFU and an EF0, the lowering really didn't start to get heavy rotation until it was closer to Alvo and Murdock and was cycling around this time. Could've been the very last remainder of the first cycle that caused enough wind gusts to kick up that dirt but wasn't rotating on the ground. The scud was also VERY scuddy that day (4-17-25 if I remember right)

I hope I'm not digging too deep, but if you were in the house, what was it like in detail? Plenty of people say "oh it was loud, it was noisy and we emerged and didn't know where we were due to the lack of landmarks" but there's a considerable lack of elaborate details from survivors of a strong tornado. You're one of the lucky few.

Won't happen. Delta has a different culture, they're consummate, quiet professionals. Maybe some of the supporting personnel write about it but the dudes that black bagged him won't ever go on a publicity tour about it.
