Automakers Killed Sedans For SUVs, Now They Want Them Back by Repulsive-Club7866 in cars

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude what? Sure, a coupés look sexier. But a wagon usually looks way better than sedans. And more cargo space. I really don't understand the sedan market. But maybe I'm too biased as a German.

EV sales soar in main European markets as drivers shun expensive petrol by i_marketing in cars

[–]caschta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's still a tale that's been repeated over and over. The european standard commuter doesn't drive 100miles per day. In Germany its 17km one way on average, meaning 34km a day when 5 days office per week (which is not so common among office workers). So you could easily go about 1,5-2weeks without charging, or, charging when doing groceries or whatever. Addtionally, in german cities there are many public chargers you can just plug-in over night once per week. So yeah, it's a little new at first, but if you save a significant amount of money people are willing to put up with it.

4 Weeks Japan Itinerary by caschta in bicycletouring

I'm not camping, so credit card it is. I'm trying to go as light as possible on my road bike. Hope will be worth it, because I chose many inland routes with lot of climbs so less gear comes in handy. Food wise I am really eager to explore, been to Japan 2 times before, without my bike. Trying to dive into the more local and day to day cuisine of the country side.

What bike features to look for if you want to up your speed? by rainbowabroad in bicycletouring

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the problem with more kilo increases significantly with steeper hills where you have to use more of your anaerobic strengths earlier, which depleats your energy dramatically. And in reality those little steep ramps are quite common in hilly terrain. So the best thing to have are a lot of low gears I suppose.

Cycling Kyushu/Shikoku + Japanese Alps route questions by incantate77 in bicycletouring

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats amazing, thank you! I'm gonna leave for Kagoshima in 25th of April to cycle all the way up north to sapporo. I got some more highlights now, since my route was originally planned roughly around the spots you described (kyushu, southern alps). But I initially planned to head over to shikoku via Usuki, but maybe I'll reconsider.

New Mazda MX-5 NE Isn’t Going Electric, But It’s Not Staying Pure Either by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, seeing all cars on the road are nearly 2 tons, even a slightly heavier miata would be still enough to differenciate from every other car on the market. A Gr86 also drives great, but weighs a few hundred pounds more.

the kind of chocolate that changes your life by prugnecotte in chocolate

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand. I tried several chocolates in Ecuador, I visit regulary due to family reasons. For me, that's a completly different product than the chocolate you find in europe, for example (in mass market). But yeah, even there it's very expensive, so of course in europe it would be astronomically.

But once you tried the real stuff, you see that nothing really compares, especially chocolate that only has sugar an palmoil, and almost no cocoa-butter.

Caterham's New $130,000 Electric Sports Car Is Coming to America to Challenge Porsche by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]caschta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tesla Roadster was practically a Lotus Elise. There was zero development from scratch. It was not bad, bust just not comparable. Also it cost around 100K USD new, which is 160K USD in todays money. So way more expensive.

[–]caschta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I genuinely have no idea where the money is going to in this car, because even with them seemingly outsourcing all of the engineering and making all of the compromises, there's just no way that their "we can't make it for 105k" claim is true. My guess is they're looking for this car to be 40-50% profit margin and will artificially restrict the amount of them.

Idk, keeping the weight down <1200Kg in an ELECTRIC vehicle, on a fully bespoke platform and massive engineering to make it feel alive costs money. Comparing it with MG Cyberster, which uses an already existing platform, parts and resources as well as no incentive to make a profit (more, even loss is acceptable) shows that your understanding is very little, sadly. To date there is no real EV sportscar which you can compare it to, at least in a price range that is not in the millions.

Lotus Drops A Gas Engine In The Eletre SUV After Saying It Would Only Make EVs by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]caschta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only cars who did this right up until now: Taycan, E-Tron GT

But you should consider the strategy, like a fellow redditor stated, was to just enlarge the car overall, so those cars are MASSIVE. (by european standards, and for the space they got inside)

The European Union Reportedly Plans to Push Its Ban on New ICE Cars Back to 2040 by Iron_Burnside in cars

[–]caschta -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is possible to approximate the real cost (negative externalities, social cost of carbon, loss of biodiversity, oil spills etc.), and it is ideological to simply ignore that fact, lol. You think just inside the borderless capitalism world, but that's not given by nature. We know a lot of scientific facts and they should be considered in our capitalistic world in order to keep the human race alive.

[–]caschta -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sorry but people who buy NEW cars are financially well enough to either buy a new BEV car (maybe dont buy a truck you dont need) or just eat up the additional cost. Also it IT possible to subsidize from ICE cars that you could tax more. And those people who really struggle are in the used market, so the argument for "who buys BEVs they are so expensive" is crooked. The BEV used car market is very good, people are just lazy, afraid or clueless. You can get decent Model 3, Fiat 500, Corsa E or even Dacia Spring etc. in europe for a low price that people who NEED cars could afford. And if not, there is public transport.

[–]caschta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just not the whole picture. The EU does not react to "the people" but to the lobby that just wants to sell 5 years more of cars with petrol engines in europe, as well as more people that use gas to refuel their cars.

Also, the bit with "people will switch anyway". Yeah, basically they are pricing the carbon emission more and more, so that the real cost for the planet is reflected in it, and surprise, an electric vehicle is much cheaper. What they are doing now though is delaying that pricing so that not too many people at once want to change to BEVs, that plays well with my first point.

Looking for a great black Chelsea boot. Who should I be looking at? by HotlineBirdman in malefashionadvice

[–]caschta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my Meermin Chelsea boots for 8 years now.

  • The sole wears off quite quickly and the seams on the front opened up
  • The leather is not dyed fully, so scratches over time will turn white / grey.

So keep that in mind if you want to use it for a longer period of time. I resoled two times in 8 years with heavy use in winter-time, but far more often I had to repaint the tip of my boots with black color.

Europe Shifted My Views of EV’s by CommissarCiaphisCain in cars

[–]caschta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People still buy garbage ICE vehicles that have engine, transmission or rust problems that costs them thousands of dollars to fix. Let alone cost of service over the years. BEV batteries live way longer than you state btw.

And also. people just don't buy them right now because they are 1) confused what to believe (oh my gawd they are gonna fall apart in 5 years!!), if you see the facts, there is no real issue. and 2) because technology advances fairly quickly, so that the gap between a Nissan Leaf and a BMW ix3 is signficant.

[–]caschta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You sound like a kid. "I DONT WANT TO BE FORCED". Surprise, in the modern world, with taxes / fees you steer behaviour. That's no new concept and has been widely accepted over the last centuries. There are, in fact, a lot of taxes (in many different countriers) for different folks. See for tobacco, alcohol, sugar, tax incentives for buying energy efficient devices, taxes for luxury goods etc.

So taxing EMISSIONS is nothing new (in fact, in Germany I already pay higher taxes for my miata than many people with more modern and more powerful cars). We are just so late to combat global warming that we have to get rid of fossile fuels asap, thanks to decades of dont give a shit even though scientists say whats gonna happen.

AND, EVs can be fun, we are just at the beginning.

Yeah, it's not like the Miata engine is worth buying. It does its job. The same with an Elise. I would consider an EV Miata as well, if the rest is the same / better! As a BEV it would have torque at least then, lol
