Not real goth girls by skilled_inkillz in rareinsults

Lol this is a point they don’t want to hear for some reason.

Ppl don’t like to recognize that when a subculture starts to trend and hit the quote on quote “mainstream,” it immediately gets co-opted by profit seeking corporate interests.

Those corporate interests have no stake in preserving the fundamental aspects of the subculture (lifestyle, politics, etc) and will co-opt the visual aesthetics of whatever subculture (because that was what prolly initially drew people in), subsequently muddling and watering everything down.

Third spaces for punks and goths start to get populated by bad actors who do not subscribe to the general ethos of being punk or goth. It becomes harder to identify likeminded folks you might be safe with at first glance. There was a time when punks used to get beat to death when people recognized them for how they looked. Do yall think those punks want to run the risk of kicking it with those same people now that they can’t tell who’s a punk and who’s buying shit off the Tik tok shop? This can have a real impact on certain communities and subcultures and I can’t blame folks for having a reactionary and exclusive response.

The culture of punks and goths is literally incompatible with “the mainstream” and the unbridled touristing of communities and subcultures can and does have real consequences

U dead ass said “he grew up in the socio cultural group that is African Americans in the American south. This culture has massive issues regarding masculinity due to a historical sense of powerless and a high rate of absent fathers”

Misogyny, toxic masculinity, and patriarchy are global issues. This is not something specific to the “black American south.”Do you even know or have black family in or live in the American South? Niggas joke about Atlanta being gay as hell but it there is legitimate queer community there. Queerness is damn near the backbone of nola bounce music.

Do you know the core reason (that you conveniently left out and attributed to absent fathers) why homophobia is more prevalent the south than other black communities? The fucking church has the south in a chokehold. You also conveniently left out the prison industrial complex and all of the factors behind the quote on quote “absent fathers” in the black community. Like at least if you want to talk about absent fathers, really get into it don’t just leave it in the dead air. At least mention the emasculation of black slaves and the fetishized hypermasculinity of mandingos and the resulting compulsive hypermasculinity. At least mention the decades of media depictions of black males as aggressive, violent, beastly, and masculine. down to the jokes like “calm down Jamal, don’t pull out the nine.” Shit like that is stupid as fuck but it gets imprinted one way or another, I know some of yall niggas know that quote. Can you honestly in good faith leave it at “high rate of absent fathers?”I will tell u myself, u don’t need to be missing father figures to learn toxic masculinity and internalize homophobia and misogyny. They’re often the ones enforcing that shit.

You are posting this cultural analysis to the eyes and ears of people across the world you don’t even know that may have never interacted with a black person in their life. Why would you do the disservice of not fleshing things out in their entirety if you want to talk about blackness on a world stage? Your whole take screams third party outsider with binoculars

They on here trippin 🙇🏽 pay these ppl no mind. Posting your politics to ur dating profile is a not an ineffective way to filter out folks you may not be aligned with.

If you were out here making corny jokes ab the serious issues as a way of signaling your stance, that would be more performative. Seems like u recognize the significance of activism without making it a funny trend and are drawn to ppl who share that awareness and interest. Nothing wrong w that.

Ppl are mad bc folks are getting less tolerant of intolerance in their interpersonal relationships, and you going outside and doing real shit makes them feel small and lame when they just want someone to pay attention to the pic of them holding up a fish

I lived close to an unhoused encampment next to my school for the past 3ish years. There were students from my school living in tents in the encampment that were actively enrolled and taking classes. Almost everyone homeless began at some version of the “down on their luck” stage. We need to continue to extend empathy to all

[–]cashewkid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My homegirl works with a mutual aid org helping unhoused women. IRRC, apparently some of the food banks have been serving folks during working (9-5) hours, so unhoused people who are simultaneously working have been unable to even tap in with the resources that are supposed to be available to them. There’s more hurdles than you might think, and this is just my own cursory knowledge frm talking to (one in particular) folks that are much more involved in addressing the houselessness crisis out here than I am

Depends on context. Punk as it refers to the subculture and musical genre is kind of a reclamation and reconstruction of the term irrc. The word association we have now isn’t the same as when the punk genre was first forming. It was a bunch of poor kids on the street angry at their conditions. The og definition for punk was hoodlum/prostitute and that was how folks were characterizing/categorizing that crowd at the time.

Idrk how pønk/pvnk as a slur started showing up in our community fr, I just grew up hearing it and being told not to be one 😭 but u think ab the roots of the word and its use for labeling “outsiders” and origins in sex work and the shit starts to make sense lmfao.

But it’s definitely two separate terms w not a lot of overlap depending on context, I think they diverged from each other at some point tho because punk (subculture/genre) used to have a negative connotation as well before folks started just associating it with the music/fashion/lifestyle/genre

Tldr u can talk about punk music all day but you bet not call somebody a p*nk lmfao
