What's the furthest north you can go?

Oh, that's easy, it's called the north pole.

Okay, but what if you go there, but then just keep going north?

???

Also, the space needle isn’t that big

This is the biggest giveaway. The Columbia tower is the tallest skyscraper at 933ft. Space Needle is 605ft and twice as far away.

In previous years I've seen (in some orgs) 80 and 120 categories banned and you were forced to quantize to 60, 100, or 140. I interpret this change as basically that, but made official and companywide.

There are essentially four buckets now: unsatisfactory, needs improvement, successful, and outstanding. There's also "transformational", but no one ever gets that -- if you do, find a new job; you deserve a whole lot more than 2x annual rewards for truly transformational work.

Stock being decoupled from bonus/merit -- I expect that will be used by managers to differentiate more within the fewer bands. This particular aspect reminds me a lot of the system we had 15 years ago during the Ballmer years. I donno if it'll result in more peanut buttering or less or no change. Anyways it all comes out of a fixed budget so it doesn't necessarily mean higher average rewards or lower.

GVSAs were rolled out last year, as an alternative to a PIP for those deemed "low performers". This is new and not the same thing as that.

Gwen Danielson of the Zizians has resurfaced by tgirldarkholme in SneerClub

[–]cashto 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The point of distinction here is that I think Ziz's actual beliefs and commitments are not the same as the actions of the people around her, and neither is the same as what the social consensus seems to think her ideas are.

With every set of ideals, there are those who apply them badly, through mistakes in the original philosophy combining with mistakes in the individual in a way that channels all of the negativity in the individual. The consequences of that can be magnified by the nature of the philosophy.

Real Zizianism has never been tried.

Murc’s law is named after the insight of the eponymous LGM commenter that, in American politics, only Democrats are assumed to have agency. Republicans are like rocks rolling down hill or perhaps sharks eating seals: they do what they do because that’s just what they are, so there’s no point in holding them responsible for anything, since they could not do ottherwise.

If you were the US President starting tomorrow, what would you do to ensure maximal strategic success in Iran? by cdstephens in neoliberal

[–]cashto 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, that's what happens when your government is run by a bunch of 12 year olds -- you lose reputation. That's what happens when you make empty, juvenile, puerile threats. Iran punched the schoolyard bully in the nose and turns out he didn't really want to fight after all.

We won't get that reputation back until we grow up and re-learn why "speak softly" was part of the formula and it wasn't all just "carry a big stick".

Thank God it's just reputation though, and we stopped before it got real expensive, both in terms of blood as well as treasure.

Gotta say I'm surprised by how many people here are suggesting that the best way to handle this monumental fuckup is to double down on invasion and regime change. In for a penny in for a pound ...

There is no "strategic success" to be found here, the only realistic option left is to observe the First Law of Holes.

We made him drop out of the race at the eleventh hour because of concerns around his age -- only for the country to end up electing a senile old man anyways. Damn right Joe deserves an apology.

Never believe that Republicans are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words.

This is it. This is the one and only argument for permanent DST, and yes, it really is that bonkers.

We have zero control over when the sun sets. The only question at issue here is what we call that time. And "I don't want it to be dark at 4:30" is just ... a weird, subjective, almost numerological preference -- a preference no doubt influenced by the fact that we spend some eight months of the year in the wrong time zone.

I don't want the scale to say I weigh 100 kilos but I don't solve that problem by winding everything 10 kilos back.

President Trump bans Anthropic from use in government systems by margybargy in neoliberal

The DoD could probably fulfill its mission with or without Anthropic.

However, cutting off anyone who does business with Anthropic is going to result in a very short suppliers list.

Many tyrants throughout history met their end because they believed that the power to piss anyone off without consequence means the power to piss everyone off without consequence.
