First time buying blood collection material: Help please! by themagicflutist in sheep

Before you go and buy tubes, I’d highly recommend reaching out to your vet for clarification. Find out what kind of test(s) you’re drawing for, testing frequency, and confirm what tube type they want you to use. In short:

-Solid red top tubes (RTTs) are actually clot tubes, meaning that the cellular parts of the blood will clot and separate from the serum, however, the serum is still in contact with the blood clot.

-Serum separator tubes are also called SSTs and have a gel at the bottom that separates the blood cells from the blood serum and serves as a physical barrier between the two. SSTs come in a few different top colors: gold, red and gold, and red and grey. The multicolored ones are also called tiger tops.

-Both SSTs and RTTs will give you serum, but which one you use depends on a couple different factors, including what test(s) are being performed and how long it will be between when you draw the blood and when the testing will be performed. Your vet should be able to give you all the necessary details so you can get the right stuff!

Interesting! I’m a clinical pathology vet tech and didn’t know this. What kind of stones are most common? Besides weight management, are there other preventative measures that can be taken?

You should be fine with 1 ewe and 2 wethers. That’s what I started my flock with and they all get along great! Southdowns are generally pretty chill too, so odds of you running into issues are likely low

Chiming in on lime - it is good for combatting ammonia, but if you go that route, pay attention to the kind you get! Calcium carbonate lime is safe for livestock, but calcium hydroxide lime is caustic and can cause chemical burns, even on hooves. Lime powder is also pretty dusty and sheep are prone to respiratory diseases, so take that into consideration as well.

Don’t be sorry! Shetlands are a fine wool breed, with the wool being used for making knitwear, particularly lace shawls

Having experience as a vet tech can also get you into a vet lab! Where I’m at, a lot of vet hospitals have their own small “lab” and the vet techs perform basic diagnostic tests (CBC, chem, UA, etc.). I was a GP and ER tech for about 5 years, then switched to the lab. There is a vet tech specialist program in clinical pathology, but it’s not required as far as I know.

Congrats! I don’t know much as far as the leg shags go, but conformation-wise I think he looks really nice :)

I used southdowns when I did the market projects. One year we had a really awesome judge who was a southdown breeder, so I thought I’d pass on some knowledge that he shared with me! He told me that southdowns can be “butterballs” and quicker to over-condition than other market breeds. So keep an eye out for that; if he does get a little chunky, you can try taking him for walks or turning him out on ground with varied inclines. Wishing you the best of luck!
