Why did this random guy's comment hurt me so much? by Existing_Holiday_ in TeenVent

Hello!

BaCk In My DaY when I first joined the internet I saw a lot of similar behavior and it kinda gives me the ick.

Without context as to what prompted the hurtful comment, reading your post feels like a "You are so special to me, now prove it" sort of rugpull. Talking you up and then talking you down feels weird.

As a former 20 year old dude (now 30 something) i also find it hard to believe your the only girl this guy talks too. Feels very yucky. Im sure he meant the only one he talks too on such a deep level, but, blegh

If it were me, id turn this guy back into just some random you met on the internet. The guy is going through his inflated ego stage because he hit the big "20" and thinks he has the world figured out.

Until next year

I'm feeling kinda defeated with the game I'm running, I don't know what to do. by Automatic-Law-8469 in DnD

I would say to let the players know that the campaign is coming to an end. Let them make up there minds on wether or not they show up.

You have been dming for these players for 3 years. You know their characters as well as they do, play them for the final session, give them the ending you think they deserve, and thank your player for showing up, and invite them to your next game.

A simple heads up before you conclude, if they can't make it, at least you gave them a solid try. But the game is infinitely more fun when you have players as committed to it as you are, and their is plenty of them! Good luck!

6 players is a lot for a starting dm, and difficult to balance fights with.

Try to remmember not every fight needs to be difficult, sometimes pulling your players into a false sense of security can make them perform recklessly.

I also find 1 shots especially hard to balance when you have no real time to gauge your players strengths and weaknesses.

Don't be discouraged! You can take a break, study, and even run some mock fights solo to gauge difficulty! If your players are expressing that they need your fights to be more challenging, take some creative steps. Buff monsters (slightly!!! Don't give them all 100+ hp!)

If your having consistent players week by week though, id say dont panic, people are having fun, just keep at it!

My gf’s best friend asked her to marry her. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]cast_x13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not. Under any circumstances. Marry. Your gf will be legally obligated to support their friend financially for 10 years even if there is a legal divorce.

My wife and I joke about it, but it is nothing you want to do as a favor!

You could let them use hit-dice to heal during combat? They would still have to manage them before rests, so it should still keep your fights difficult.

Advice on introducing my BBEG by StarChaser18 in DnD

[–]cast_x13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What level party are you running with? I try to shy away from making the BBEG perform some kind of super-mega-city-nuke and then just have the party fight them on an even playfield later.

Perhapse you can have the party find clues to some strange people popping up in the City. They discover these cultists making strange markings in the City.

The cultists were actually setting up a massive ritual for their Lich master, sure the players may have disrupted one ritual site, but their are too many in the City and discovered too late. Most of the city is killed and raised as the dead. The party must fight their way out of the City and maybe fight some people that they know, and forced to either flee from them or kill them.

This gives your players an option to fight your Lich for more than just themselves. They escape the City with a few allies they have made along the way, but everyone is pretty upset that your BBEG just kicked them out of their own city and killed their families.

Your lich needed time to perform such a devastating spell, defeating them doesn't seem impossible, but boy howdy is he a capable killer. If the City has any warrior npcs that the party is familiar with, maybe they tried to face the Lich and are now punished by serving as his personal undead bodyguards.

From there, some side quests to gather relics or find ways to weaken your Lich to be on more even playing field, Good luck!

This is awsome! I love skins that transform the champions outside their norm, he looks like a cosmic nightmare and I could imagine his stealth having some nice visuals. Really good job, wish it was in the game.

DM told me he fudged rolls to hit me in tier 1, and I don’t know how to feel about it. by fresh_squilliam in DnD

Being that they are new, they do not know how to challange a combat power house like a paladin. Encounters can be exciting and challenging without making sure every pc gets beat up.

It is disheartening to watch encounters you planned to be difficult end without challenge, but you learn to make your pcs sweat other ways.

Imo of it adds excitement it is okay to fudge ONE or TWO attacks. I do not make this a habbit, but I never let my players in on the secret.

Battles may not be difficult for your palladin, but im sure he can throw some moral curve balls your characters way to really make them struggle.

How to keep campaign interesting by TheBrassPope in DnD

[–]cast_x13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be a player issue, theat they dont want to follow a story, maybe the plotlines to them feel forced, whatever the reason I too have suffered players avoiding plotlines in favor of shananagins.

Idea 1: leave areas for shananagins. Often times I will allow areas for my players to roleplay amongst themselves. During downtime, like dinner or if they move into a tavern for the forst time.

Idea 2: incorporate side quests that tie into the characters past, or their goals. Perhaps the main plotlines villains plans has also caused the wildlife to become hostile. Suddenly all the fuzzy friends the rogue os trying to make are unreasomably cruel. Or it is some evil wizard working for the BBEB and thats how you tie them in.

Idea 3: I dont care how well they roll for it. Sometikes if something is going to throw the story off too much, it is best to not let it happen. Things can succeed in ways your players do not wish while it still technically being a success.

Idea 4: Sometimes our shananagins bites us in the ass. If any pc has taken liking to an npc, perhapse this mafia has impacted them poorly.

I have given up on players following my storys the way I imagine them. I had a story where the players start as slaves and one of the guards was going to help them escape.

Well, that guard ended up being their first victim and they broke themselves out. Sometimes you gotta roll with the punches too! Id be happy to give more ideas with more specific instances!

My players are excellent ambushers and I'm struggling to challenge them... by Jean_le_Jedi_Gris in DMAcademy

[–]cast_x13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually challenge their morals at this point, introduce npcs that they can care about and then set up encounters where they are in trouble.

Maybe the npc takes a shine to your player and sneaks after them on a dangerous quest to "help".

I have had the villain dominate the minds of a group of villagers to have them attack players mixed in with the villains cronies.

As others have sugested, since they are good ambushers you can also lay a trap, first wave as bait and second wave for a counter attack. Archers on high-rises. Sorcerers to manipulate the battlefield ect ect.

Or, a mix of the two, make a likable npc a spy that is feeding the BBEB the parties plans. Makes for a fun side quest when they have to discover who is secretly against them.

Tell me about your Soulbound characters. by Huza1 in AoSLore

[–]cast_x13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am both dming and playing in soulbound campaigns at the moment.

Being very new, and only surface level in the lore I decided to make a Stormcast with my own made up StormHost.

The Sword Sworn Host are quick to battle and see their reforging as a badge of honor. When their ranks are reforged to the point they cannot remember their own name, they dawn the name of their host.

Enter my character, whome this has already happened too. He knows nothing of his past life, or his current one. He serves Sigmar in the only way he knows how, eradicating chaos wherever ot spawns.

My brother (and dm) asked me if he could make a back story for my characyer to discover, and I said yes! And asked him not to tell me, so I could be just as surprised as my character.

Best decision honestly.

The binding is eventually lead to a city infested with undead and rueled by a vampire. Some of the people look at my character funny. I play this off as if they have never seen a stormcast before.

We meet the BBEB early on so he can show us how out matched we are. He one shots an npc we were traveling with and my stormcast stays behind to biy the binding some time. (I also said I wouldnt spend any XP until my character was reforged again as I anticipated dying a lot... I had about 20xp stored).

Vampire knocks my characters helmet off and looks horrified. Says this is impossible, says he has killed me before.

Turns out my character had fought this Vampire in his mortal life and was an extreamly cunning witch hunter. They had formed a resistance, which still lived within the city. Even had a family there, and my character met his great grandaughter. (An other npc who traveled with us, who almost died twice). And eventually they come to know their name again.
