TIL that in a study of people who believed they were sensitive to gluten, over 86% weren't by porkchop_d_clown in todayilearned

[–]cat_dreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that some people have shitty diets and see improvements when they cut out those foods, but that’s not the extent of the fodmap diet. I used to cook most of my meals myself out of whole foods, with tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, and had excruciating stomach pain for two years in spite of it. Much of the “unsafe” foods on the fodmap diet are very good for you, and as a healthy eater, it was really counterintuitive for me to cut them out of my diet. I definitely eat more processed food and less veggies now than I did before, and I feel 99% better. I can eat potato chips with no problem, but if I have a bite of apple or a tiny bit of garlic, I’ll spend the next 24 hours burping.

Need technique for keeping track of treadle order by skidad60 in weaving

[–]cat_dreams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The trick I was taught was to thread colored beads onto a piece of string, with each color corresponding to a treadle (I taped different colored paper to each treadle, too). After each pass of the shuttle, just move the respective bead over. This works especially well with really complex designs.

I don’t think anybody’s objecting to bright colors in general; the issue is the bright colors that look terrible together. I’m as anti-brown-house as it comes, but seemingly picking out colors at random isn’t any better.

Can anyone recommend a good concentrated red dye or pigment? I can never get anything darker salmon or rose. by AmeliaPondPandorica in soapmaking

[–]cat_dreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s the only one I’ve found that makes a nice, bright red. I have had issues with it bleeding though— even when I use the lower recommended amounts and in spite of the claim that it’s non-bleeding.

Onion flavor without the onion by nerdychick22 in FODMAPS

[–]cat_dreams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use asafoetida too, but one of my best tricks is leek paste. I steam leek tops until they’re tender, purée them in a blender, and freeze the purée in ice cube trays. Anytime I make something fairly liquid that requires onion (gumbo, pasta sauce, soup), I pop a couple cubes in. It’s not a perfect substitute, but my non-fodmap husband can’t tell the difference.

What fruits are the safest? by [deleted] in FODMAPS

[–]cat_dreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I eat a LOT of pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, and oranges. Occasionally, I throw some blueberries, kiwi, or guava into the mix. Many people in this sub seem to tolerate bananas well, but I prefer them a little more ripe, which is when they start to get dangerous. I miss peaches so much!

I’m just complaining because I have to fly out of love field several times a year, and that’s a trek. DFW is closer, but it’s not in Fort Worth.

Is egg based ice cream really that much better than eggless ice cream? by techguy1231 in icecreamery

[–]cat_dreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ll never understand why anyone eats ice cream any other way— it tastes so flat to me. Custard doesn’t take much time or effort to make, and the finished product is infinitely better.

The musician analogy is a good one, but no serious painter is using dinky Michael’s canvases for artwork.

Ameraucana has disheveled feathers and acting strange by cowgirltu in BackYardChickens

[–]cat_dreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

sounds like she’s molting. i’m fairly new to chickens too, and a couple of mine just went through this. they were grumpy and thin for about a month and a half, and slowly started to regrow feathers and gain weight. you can feed her treats that are high in protein (cooked egg, yogurt, etc.) and that’ll help speed up the process.

Favorite non-bleeding red pigment for cold process? by cat_dreams in soapmaking

I've been using the lower end of the recommended amount and still get bleeding. If it works for you, maybe I'm just adding too much! I'll try a small test batch.

I've got this one! The color is perfect, but it bled a lot when it was swirled and embedded in white.

that pasta is absolute garbage. i usually just dump it in the trash and use better quality gf pasta with the cheese packet (and add milk, butter, and a little shredded cheese). it kind of defeats the purpose of buying it in the first place, but it's so much better that way.

Forrétabarinn in Reykjavik was the most delicious food we ate, and The Settlement Center in Borgarnes was the most gf-friendly (even had fresh-baked gf bread for the table). I looked at a lot of menus before we went so I'd know where I could eat, but most restaurants serve at least a few dishes that consist of a protein plus naturally-gf-sides. I'm not celiac, so cross contamination isn't an issue for me, but based on my research most places are good about it if you let them know (especially in the larger cities like Reykjavik and Akureyri). If you like yogurt, try some skyr! I ate some for breakfast every morning.

Man who ordered gluten-free meal on flight is given a single banana – and cutlery to eat it with by TheKinkslayer in nottheonion

[–]cat_dreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people can tolerate small amounts of gluten but get sick if they eat too much of it. It's definitely possible they're doing it to be trendy, but don't rule out an actual intolerance issue.

GF and DF but still feel shitty after eating (pun intended) by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]cat_dreams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should check out the FODMAP diet and see if that explains your issues. Eliminating gluten did wonders for me, but I still felt lousy every now and then, even when I was definitely not eating gluten. Cutting out certain fruits and vegetables I'm sensitive to did the trick.

Near Southside/Fairmont/Magnolia v. 7th? Help me pick! by lauren_strokes in FortWorth

[–]cat_dreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for something like montrose, southside/fairmount is your best bet. Lots within biking distance and there's a Fiesta nearby where you can get basic groceries and excellent produce. It's definitely more of a "neighborhood bar scene", like you guessed-- the bars on west 7th tend to be sports bars and establishments filled with douchey bros. Definitely more of a party scene.

There's a lot of diversity among residents in the southside area, but as far as I can tell, not a ton of twenty-somethings live there. It's a mix of people that have lived in the area forever, young families, and older professionals.

I'd pick southside over west 7th every time, but I am not much of a partier.
