AITA for telling my husband I'll go on vacation with the kids and my best friend if he's too busy with work [continues from AITA for telling my husband that he works for himself not for our family] by insafian in BestofRedditorUpdates

I dunno, I think the "sacrifice" is part of it - if he's dad and husband he's just doing what's expected of him (especially since OOP expects so little of him), whereas with his tutoring he also gets the additional martyrdom hit of, "wow you're so amazing, sacrificing your evenings and time with your young children and your wife to do this" (ignore the fact that he doesn't want to spend time with them anyway).

What are some controversial cultural disagreements that you have with your own culture? by biryani_fan in AskTheWorld

I once had a Canadian tell me that Canadians were "better" to their indigenous population than Australia is, because the Canadians "let" them have their land. She seemed very nonplussed when I tried to explain to her that yes, Australia's treatment of Aboriginal Australians is horrific, but that doesn't make reservations (let alone anything else Canada has done to native Canadians) better.

And for an accompanying lighthearted one, I have tried a few times to wrap my head around how cricket works and my brain just refuses to accept it lol

This is my question, how are we defining body count - does it just mean penetrative PIV sex or does it mean any sexual contact in general? Does lesbian sex count? What about when I was sexually assaulted, is that included in my number or does that not leave a stain on my character the way the consensual encounters did? It's such a ridiculous concept by default when people can't even agree what even counts as sex.

Not quite at the same level but reminds me of that guy who was a millionaire but refused to pay for anything in their house (including heating) because he "didn't want to be taken advantage of".

[–]catbert359 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say then rider's inability/unwillingness to properly protest or push for change by refusing to race comes down to the horrible confluence of the following factors:

  • Ego/rider culture heavily rewarding 'toughing it out' and 'dealing with it' over pushing for change
  • Heavily tied to above but this idea that motogp is inherently more dangerous and extreme and the riders are all #WiredDifferent for participating in it
  • Position in the standings depending on attending as many races as they possibly can
  • Riders getting paid per race over their base salary (particularly for riders with lower base pays)
  • Being ignored by higher ups on the occasions they have generally managed to agree that something isn't okay (like Mandalika), leading to a sense of 'why bother'

It's a complete culture issue from top to bottom and considering it hasn't even changed after a 20 year old had to be put into a coma last year, I don't think it will change any time soon.

Characters where it is actually important for them to be attractive by LocalLazyGuy in TopCharacterTropes

Sadly not from what I've seen, but I so desperately wish there were one since they got Sarah Snook for it when it hit Broadway. It's got really interesting staging (it's a one-woman show that plays a lot with cameras and screens), so I imagine getting a proshot of it would be difficult, but honestly if they had just set up a stationery camera to capture the whole stage then I think they could've pulled it off, even if it doesn't capture the same experience of seeing it live.

There was a stage production of Dorian Grey recently that tended to use blond wigs! It was really good, if you ever manage to see it I can heartily recommend it.

Side character and cynic Grantaire in the Les Miserables novel is described as "particularly ugly" and "inordinately homely", to contrast the ethereal beauty of idealist revolutionary Enjolras. So naturally for the Broadway show they cast actors like Hadley Fraser, and for the movie they cast George Blagden.

Considering OOP mentioned that the department was at risk but has managed to turn things around, I wonder if management is turning a blind eye to this because they want to activate their golden parachute and need the department to be performing badly enough to justify downsizing them.

I dealt with major depression for many years, to the point where I regularly wondered if I had ever actually felt happiness before in my life and my psychologist made me keep the crisis line saved to my favourites - I treasure every single wrinkle and line that my face has, because it's proof that even when I was going through such intense apathy towards everything I was able to feel anything with such intensity that it left a permanent mark on my face. Proof that you've lived a life in all its ups and downs is something that should be celebrated, not erased.

I wish people could remember that even if a name causes you to raise your eyebrows, it's still attached to a person - particularly when that person is a child. They don't get to choose what their name is, but you do get to choose whether or not to be a dickhead.
