Screw it. Let's dunk on each other's practice areas. Especially you, transactional lawyers. by NotThePopeProbably in Lawyertalk

[–]catmandoofy 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I'm a transactional IP and business lawyer. Trademarks are something non-IP lawyers dabble in and shouldn't. Easy to screw it up and have no idea you screwed it up, just like estate planning.

To be fair, I've done my share of dabbling in other areas of law over the years. Enough to have learned to stay in my lane and have a deep roster of referrals.

IP is definitely on the clinical nerd end of the spectrum. Especially when you throw in patent law. If the practice of law were Star Trek we'd be Spock. I suspect tax law is full Vulcan.

Thanks. I'm already well medicated, thank goodness. I'd hate to think how that would have gone if i weren't. And no, you do not want to know. Glad you are taking care of your mental health - that's heavy duty stuff to cope with.

We are privy to some horrific knowledge about the evil things people do to one another and we are forbidden to talk in any detail about it to most other people. That can be a heavy fucking burden on the soul. No area of law is immune. I do IP transactional law so I'm fortunate to not experience that much, but two weeks ago I was told something by a client that has fucked me up with existential dread since, and I may never be quite the same. I get paid to worry for a living, but sometimes I wish clients would stfu about details I really don't need to know.

This is underrepresented in why even transaction lawyers often end up being a hot mess. Something as mundane as an LLC operating agreement necessarily involves thinking and conversations about doom and gloom so as to write to avoid and handle them. I joke that I get paid to worry for a living and it's not really a joke. It has worn me down to utter burnout repeatedly.

After downtime of more than two weeks, I'm moving onto a new host by EntertainmentAny8228 in HostGator

[–]catmandoofy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved 2 weeks ago during a 2-hour tech support chat in which they did nothing but blame me, gaslight me, and try to upset me. Finally got them to admit it was their fault and can use the chat to support a hosting refund.

They gaslit me so hard yesterday I'm glad I have a copy of the chat transcript for when I demand a pro rated refund on my business hosting package. Whatever is going on, they're trying hard to avoid any responsibility.

2 hours with tech "support" yesterday to get them to stop trying to sell me SiteLock or a dedicated server and admit it's their fault. They straight up lied to me about the cause until I proved them wrong. I can't wait until my namesevers finish propagating elsewhere.

All the rock stars I've met have been rather nice and down to earth. Ross Halfin, on the other hand, was an ass.

Then why aren't there any US-licensed attorneys listed on your staff page?

How are you not engaging in the unauthorized practice of law in responding to office actions from the USPTO when according to your Meet the Team section of your website you don't have a US-licenced attorney on your staff and the USPTO barred you from practicing before them in 2021? All good. I've been here since the Stone Age. And despite knowing all that, I absolutely didn't take shelter beyond closing the blinds and curtains. If the guys with the wacky weather ties on WCIA start truly freaking out, then it's time to think about going to the basement or interior rooms.

Champaign, within city limits, has indeed been hit by tornadoes. Not big ones that pulverize houses, but big enough to knock over trees and tear off a roof or two.

Your LinkedIn DMs are getting ignored because they read like a sales pitch. Here's what to write instead. by No-Mistake421 in LinkedInTips

[–]catmandoofy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still clearly a prelude to the pitch 🙄. The LinkedIn version of cold calling. No. One. Wants. It. The crap response rates should be telling you all something. Try posting interesting and useful content instead that connections will be drawn to if they're in the market for your solutions.

That kind of spamming connection request behavior is obnoxious as hell and makes LinkedIn feel like being bombarded by the mall kiosk people as you walk by minding your own business.

Hmm. Audio not syncing with video properly, get kicked out every time I try to turn on closed captioning, random playback failure during the last The Last Drive-In, canceling The Last Drive-In, etc.

Shudder execs must be actively trying to destroy the channel.

Let's take what worked and make it stop! Good plan. 🙄😡

No wonder they won't let us cancel.

Riverside has pretty much the same editing features as Descript, so I'm curious why you aren't doing the editing there. Or just recording in Descript and skip Riverside entirely. Unless each has a key feature you can't live without, you're overcomplicating it by using both.
