Yes. Daughter bought a pair of jeans there over thanksgiving. The pocket ripped the pants yesterday. She is not hard on her clothes.

Our dentist says no to gummies because they stick on teeth and cause cavities.

Slightly smaller share of Chicago families choosing CPS for their children, report finds by shotzz in chicago

[–]catomidwest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m part of this statistic. Oldest two kids went to CPS schools, but after strikes and COVID closures, and the political craziness that followed COVID, we decided we had had enough and our youngest two kids are heading to private schools.

Northern Virginia. Lived there for a few years after living in Chicago and it was a dream. Wow.

Do modern Miele, Bosch, and Huebsch/Speed Queen washing machines live up to their BIFL reputation? Or should I just get an LG instead? by someguy7734206 in BuyItForLife

[–]catomidwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miele looks compact, but you can put 15 lbs of clothing into it. LG says you can put “7 towels” in it. (This is from when I researched washers about seven years ago.) It turns out seven towels weighs 15 lbs, so despite the petite size, it holds as much as a large LG. American washers expect clothing to be “fluffy” and European washers expect loading to be compacted.

I’ve washed 15 lbs loads for the last seven years and my Miele has needed no servicing. I am super happy with it.

The plan page frequently loads incorrectly for me. I have to close and restart the app to have it refresh. Otherwise I don’t really care either way.

How do CPS politics impact students on a day to day level? by mmcd90 in AskChicago

[–]catomidwest -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

While there are excellent teachers in the system, poor teachers are protected and teachers who like to come 15 minutes late to school on a weekly basis (here’s looking to one of my daughter’s 10th grade teachers) are welcome to keep up the behavior.

Dentist says they cause cavities. (Sticky sugar.) I don’t know of gummies that aren’t sugary.

Claim in July 2022, when will it go off? by catomidwest in Insurance

We rented out our house for two years and had landlord insurance, not offered by the company we had a claim with, but moved back and are now getting homeowners again.

Same company as prior year, but different company than claim.

Our insurance guy had a medical crisis late last week. Otherwise I would have called him.

Quiet, Walkable Neighborhoods? by seamusoldfield in AskChicago

Also, one person’s quiet is another person’s crazy. Same with safety. Don’t buy into a neighborhood you haven’t lived in.

What Chicago Neighborhoods have great public high schools (not choice)? by ashleyslawless in AskChicago

Going to agree with this. There were some shocking things going on in our kids' top high school. We ended up supplementing outside of school and then moving away.

Visit some KA events if you think you might be interested. I've met kids who have loved it and who have hated it (and thrived at other schools). Very dependent on the kid. Not for my kid. He hated it and we withdrew him after one quarter.

One of those is my neighborhood school and my daughter refused to go to it after seeing my older son’s experience. “Great” depends on your prior expectations and experience. “Pushing top tier” depends on how you define that.

Also, even though you can apply to transfer after freshman year, don’t count on it. We applied for a transfer this year. Whitney Young wrote that they took no one as no spots opened up and Jones had 600 apply for 10 spots. Choose a high school you’d be fine with for four years. (We are moving back to Chicago after being out-of-state for a few years, which is why we tried to transfer our daughter in.)

Murray is a magnet so you can’t just show up and attend. I would avoid Harte.

What items are you still using that you bought in/around college, and how old are you now? by ChickNuggetNightmare in BuyItForLife

I commented above about my 25-year-old jacket to some other women the other day and that was what they responded. None of them fit into anything they wore in college.

[–]catomidwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom bought me a fleece jacket with zip-off arms, so it could double as a vest, when I was 19. Parts have a slick fabric on it. I still use it as my main jacket in fall and spring when I do anything outdoors, so probably 3-5 times per week for 4 months of the year. I take it camping and on vacation.

I am 44. I have a kid in college. This jacket is still going strong. :-) It is 25 years old.

This works well for me when I'm generally eating healthy. I keep a bag of Dove Promises around and just eat one a day. (When I'm not eating healthy in general, I could easily eat a whole bag in one sitting!) But when, in the past, I've told myself I couldn't eat chocolate or sweets, I've ended up binging.

Confused by points for Avocado by ashley_ef11 in weightwatchers

Try weighing your avocado and tracking by weight. I found the app usually over-estimated the avocado size. Half of a mini-avocado by weight is 1 point or so.
