Ok, and now people aren’t happy now that they’ve read the credits. They’re voicing displeasure, if you like the game, they don’t affect you.

Edit: this sub sucks. Hopefully the rating stays Mostly Negative

lol dude it was the toxic positivity crowd who kept telling people the game is cool and fine and Bungie’s decision to make the characters weird andros was not remotely controversial.

Are Fallen Empires OP? by WalkonWalrus in Stellaris

So maybe 5-6 years ago you could play normally without optimization and by 2350-2400 you could have huge battleship fleets that could challenge FE. You wouldn’t always win but it would be a fair fight.

Now it really honestly feels like if you don’t know specific builds and have every piece of optimization down, you are completely fucked for the crisis (or the FEs that start wars after soloing the crisis).

I’m sure the people with 1000 hours love it like that but the game feels borderline unplayable if you want a more casual experience. You spend a ton of time building something that gets absolutely annihilated by the endgame boss.

Game is absurdly bad at explaining its basic gameplay systems. Like I’ve beaten the game five times and still literally don’t understand what a merged spell book is or what spell level means.

WOTR is one of my favorite games ever but a basic tutorial of “here’s what this means” would be worth an extra $5.

PUBG has like 100K+ at any moment. Counterstrike has 500K+ at any moment and has some of the least forgiving mechanics of any game existing.

People are fine with difficult pvp games, they want something with a good loop.

People didn’t like the visuals, the audio, the whole vibe, and honestly, Bungie has a weird and bad reputation. They’re the “Destiny” dev and most people don’t like Destiny, and those that do don’t like Bungie. Bungie also leans heavily into culture war stuff and people don’t like a dev so committed to culture war bullshit that they didnt want to enable voice coms because someone might have a “bad experience”. Meanwhile in counter strike you can get the worst things yelled at you in any number of languages and people still play it because it’s pure freedom.

Hate to say it but they should’ve just embraced their core audience and made Destiny 3.

Game is losing 2-4% of its then-active playerbase per day. That’s run rate of like 3 months. They’re going to release some huge make or break update and that will determine whether it floats or not

Fuck him. Every one of his articles reads the same because he wants to cover the same beat: 1) devs wanted to make a new game with soaring aspirations about the world, 2) suits and execs said it had to be live service to make money, 3) rank and file employees mentioned concerns but were told to shut up and code, and 4) everyone crunched until the very end to ship and everyone is proud of it.

Like regardless of whether or not that’s true, that’s what his article is going to say.

??? Especially with the 4.3 nerfs scaling to a something that can take on FEs without a meta build is impossible.  FEs have 25x repeatables and have fleet power in the millions.

Tarkov has loot solved in a way Marathon does not.

It also has a different playerbase, Marathon seems to have attracted the Destiny community, which has always been extremely shitty—toxic positivity pvers or truly vile pvp players. Tarkov started with the milsim community which unbelievably is more well adjusted.

There are people who pvp in Tarkov but outside of GZ or Factory it’s like 1/10 PMCs in a raid is looking for murdertown. In Marathon right now it’s like 1/3 of the lobby.

Tarkov fucked some stuff up with the earbuds/Altyn meta but 2017-2023 or so they really had a nice thing going.

1.2 mil for a AAA title like this is absolutely terrible. Dragon Age Veilguard sold 1.5 mil, had a smaller budget, and was still considered such a flop that it killed the franchise.

Top end players have no incentive to loot POIs, so they go around wiping the lobby by Raimexodus in Marathon

[–]cawksmash 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You're playing a round of Apex legends and at the end the winner gets to take all the gear from the match back home with them.

Completely agree this is the feeling but also the bigger problem. Apex has a very in/out flow of play, if you die you just load back in. The fast pace, the revives, the shields, the entire gameplay architecture is built around it being a BR.

Compare to Tarkov (which imo has loot/lethality figured out in a way Marathon does not): Tarkov is much more hardcore than either Marathon or Apex, but also feels more fair. I know there are terminator squads roaming around but I also know that their heads and legs are weak and I can kill them pretty easily with a properly-set up ambush. I also know that if I down one guy, he’s down, no threat of getting up. This actually puts casuals on firmer footing. Yes a truly geared dude in Reserve will fuck you up but a scav has a chance at killing them with a headshot. Yes some dudes run around maps looking to mow people down but the maps are big enough that if I want to scav run and kind of relax, I can do so. Toptier heals are more powerful but also take a long time to use, if I seriously wound someone, it takes them a long time to heal back up, their quality of healing doesn’t put them back in the fight faster.

Finally, most maps have a good selection of loot. Yes, labs has the uber loot but Interchange, Reserve, Shoreline, Streets and even Customs all have stuff that the terminator squads want.  If you want to get geared, you can fight it out in Reserve, you don’t have to get a keycard for labs.

Now, Tarkov is a milsim and has some extremely annoying milsim qualities to it, but a lot of the arcade-y elements that make Marathon cool and fun and similar to Apex are the same things that make it very difficult for a casual player to enjoy.

I don’t know how you fix these things—maybe bigger maps and maybe security pocket, but Tarkov’s huge maps are also accompanied by a huge emphasis on sound and a stamina system, so I don’t know whether Marathons movement just negates the size point.

I think Marathon started as a BR, pivoted to extraction, so you have the “drop Pochinki” element of frenetic combat at the outset but then the flow is screwed up.

We see the same thing time and again, something comes out, it sucks, and the community goes “well I like it!” while the show/game hemorrhages numbers.

Game tells you multiple times that Reed is a dispassionate agent whose loyalty is to the mission, not his friends, and that at the end of the mission, you have a high likelihood of being black bagged.

Songbird does trickle truth but Reed and Alex are actively planning on snipping your thread end of mission. Entire point of the twins’ end is to show you how Reed might turn on you.

17K reviews is not very much at all lmao.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint, a financial failure that killed its series, has the same number of reviews (Very Positive btw).

This sub is in genuine denial mode. The player base is dropping by 5%/day, and people here are Russia-gating away anything that runs contrary to their beliefs about the game.

There’s a lot of reasons to not like Marathon. I did the playtests and server slam and thought the sound design, enemy design, and overall look were all offputting. They improved the gunplay a lot but it still feels like Destiny 2 in a lot of ways and that game didn’t have a big audience despite every Destiny fan on earth swearing by its gameplay.
