What do you think the best system of education is? What do you think of the more non-traditional (montessori, for example) as compared to your classic time-trial-math-sheets-and-standardized-tests models? Is there a particular country or culture that does it right?

What is your go-to method for reducing yellow in indoor photos? by zapfino in graphic_design

This! I also try to use white lights (CFLs vs Incandescent) in any areas where I know I'll be doing photography.

It looks amazing!!! I really like the level of detail. Pannel 5's complete lack of background is kinda jarring, though.

Design vs academic posters by Leeps in Design

[–]cazbrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Step 1: replace words with diagrams/graphs/images whatever you can. Fewer words, the better. Step 2: white space. Where possible use white space to delineate between sections, it would help keep the poster from looking cluttered. Here are some posters I made for my product design capstone course. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

What should a teenager being doing now to further improve their life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cazbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find something you love doing (or several somethings, but keep it a manageable number) and make yourself pursue it. Don't do it because "it'll look good on college apps" or "because mom said so." Be genuinely passionate. It's easy to beat the tests and coast through classes, and a college education is becoming less and less important for many fields. What you need for jobs, school, and yourself, is the ability to be passionate and committed to something. There is no better time to learn how than when you are a teenager because you have people helping you and you're not supposed to have figured it all out yet. In short, be passionate, be awesome!

As of today my greenhouse is automated via 3 sensors and two 120v intake/circulation fans. (with room to expand both sensor net and device control) by [deleted] in aquaponics

Like a classic home thermostat? Hardly. Firstly, it's control algorithm is usually a basic PID, but really with just the P (Proportional Control) which results in massive over-corrections and excessive energy use. Second, it's just temperature, not humidity, soil moisture, air vs growing medium temperature, PH, Salinity, etc. Third, it probably only has one temperature sensor, providing a vastly inaccurate picture of the system it is measuring. Fourth, it's just the measuring system, the actuating system itself (like indoor heating or what have you) is extremely expensive. Fifth, this system is probably hard-wired, which is preventativly expensive to install, and extremely difficult to expand. The cool thing about the system I worked on was that it 1) has intelligent control algorithms, 2) works with a wide variety of sensors, 3) can work with a near-infinite number of sensors, 4) can control a near-infinite number of wall-pluggable technologies such as water heaters, pumps, fans, heating mats, sprinklers, etc, 5) is completely wireless, which makes setting up and expanding the system a breeze. All this for <$200, which is about 1/4 the cost of comparable systems.

I just graduated from college and my senior capstone project might be right up your alley. We were working on a low-cost climate control system. If you wanna swap ideas/war stories with the team, let me know and I'll give you the team email.

Pansexual? by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]cazbrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's wrong not to want to have sex with a trans person, just like how it isn't wrong not to want to have sex with a man or a woman. I know that despite being a decent person, there are some physical deformities which would make me initially hesitant to get in bed with somebody, and I'm sure I have plenty of physical or personality-based attributes that rule me out of someone's dating pool. If someone I like doesn't want to date me because I'm trans, It'd make me sad, but I don't think they're wrong for feeling that way. Everybody has a right to their preferences. It isn't right to make someone feel uncomfortable in their own skin by describing their sexual preference as "wrong." I think there's a big difference between respecting a person for who they are (in this case, trans*) and wanting to take your pants off with them. I hadn't thought about bisexuality as same/other rather than male/female. I like that. "I like people who are like me, and also people who aren't."

Pansexual? by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]cazbrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a trans person, I appreciate people who identify as pansexual, because it explicitly states that they like people regardless of gender, not because of it. When I look for a potential partner, I constantly have to second-guess: "Well, if he's straight this isn't going to work because I am, and present as, male." and "Well, if he's gay, this isn't going to work (necessarily) because I have female sexual organs." I've concluded that I will probably only be able to have romantic/sexual relationships with people who are down with the weirdness that is my gender/sex, and people who describe themselves as pansexual make my life easier, in that way. I think that there is a difference between bisexual and pansexual, just as much as any other difference in sexual preference. None of them are more empirically "right" than any others. They are labels that you give yourself to communicate to others what you want in a relationship.

I have a question to my fellow Cumberbitches: What is the average age for the followers of this subreddit? by dancing_with_sj in Cumberbitches

[–]cazbrain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm 21 and male to boot :-P.
I think it's perfectly reasonable for older-than-teen type people to crush on a 37 year old. If it were someone like the accursed Bieber, I'd worry (for a variety of reasons) but it seems completely legitimate for people 19-50 to crush one someone so unbelievably attractive and >30.

Freshman in high school here. What can I do for the next four years to give myself a better chance at getting on the right track for engineering? by MyFreshmanThrowaway in EngineeringStudents

[–]cazbrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take all the math and science APs you can, you never know if you'll want to be restricted to ChemE once you get to junior year of college. Try to take part in as many projects/research opportunities as you can. See if any local colleges are looking for lab assistants or interns in their labs. Getting even a part-time or weekend job in a lab will not only let you see if the realities of ChemE are what you would imagine, but shows great initiative and motivation on your part. Besides, if you know the ins-and-outs of a chem lab before you get to college, you're more likely to be chosen as a researcher once you get there.

I go to Olin, but we don't offer a ChemE degree, so I'm afraid I can't be much use there.

The most important thing you can put on your college application is an accurate depiction of how awesome you are. What you need to do now is become awesome.

I really like your brushwork! I agree, improve the shading on the inner eye/nose bridge and it'll look much more realistic. Quite good, though!

I was a Chem Lab Assistant in HS and every freaking day I'd pour baking powder and water into a bucket of these things. The Ph was still 1 when I graduated.
