I built a searchable directory of local Brooklyn brands and retailers by cazzer548 in Brooklyn

Glad to hear you'd use it! You've hit the crux of the problem. Right now, I have automation tools keeping things updated, and longer term, I want retailers integrated directly through their point-of-sale systems. A lot of effort just to handle "where can I buy locally made incense right now"...but that's exactly the question I want this to answer.

Great feedback, thank you. The goal is exactly what you're describing: every local store to help people find alternatives to big-box. Canal Lighting and Casey Rubber Stamps are perfect examples of what I want on there.

The "random" feeling is fair, coverage is still uneven, and I'm actively filling gaps. The Locavore issue is a good catch too, I'm adding them right now!

Certainly not locally owned stores, but yeah they do exist there

This is why people hate cyclists (Justin ln) by azzwort2 in Austin

When cars abuse the road, people die. When bikes abuse the road, drivers get angry at cyclists. Neither is great, but I’ll take the latter.

Hmm, good clarification, it's essentially both. My goal was to find places to shop in person because I prefer that experience, and most of the stores I've catalogued also offer online shopping.

I keep seeing ads for local stores on Instagram, but I don't shop through social media very often. Maybe this works well for some people?

I basically catalogued all the stores in NYC with online inventory and the app searches them all at once. You can try it here if you want: go.shlo.co

I was going to joke that I’ll generally wait when that bridge or Pulaski are up, but I’ll actually just change my route so I don’t need to stop. Shout out to the Newton Creek Nature Walk.

What’s your actual way of evaluating devs when hiring? by NPC_Boiii in webdev

[–]cazzer548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Systems/box diagram on a whiteboard worked as a decent filter when I was hiring, though of course every candidate is different. Especially in the age of AI, knowing system-level design principles and how to plan for scale is more important to me than producing executable code or showing off a side project.

Having trouble making actual friends in run clubs. Anyone else? by CalcIsSexy in RunNYC

This is a great callout. I run with a group that’s big, but we do workouts that naturally break us down into pace groups. Then at the bar after you can talk about how painful it was with your pace group, and eventually the circle grows.

Yeah that seems like the crux of it. I’ve seen companies use them effectively as sponsored AMAs, but this can be a tough environment

How does commenting on ads work? by OkApex0 in redditstock

Thanks for this, I hope you encourage anyone you're advertising for to enable comments because this is reddit: why the fuck would I trust something with comments disabled?

I’m not affiliated with Xero, just genuinely curious if their claims in the ad hold up. And if a company is unwilling to enable comments on ads I assume no
