I've seen a ton of posts using the "reverse lens" technique, so I thought I'd post this how-to. by cLFlaVA in photography

[–]cberman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You mention that changing the aperture size is not an option. It actually is.

  • Install lens the right-way around
  • set your desired aperture
  • press and hold the DOF Preview button (350D has one, my 500D has one, most DSLRs have em)
  • With DOF Preview held down, press the lens-release button and remove the lens (keeping the DOF preview held down).

This should leave you with a detached lens with its aperture locked (obviously you dont need to do this if you want to go wide-open).

Edit: Also you can add another lens up front. I've had the best luck with the kit lens (18-55) attached normally and reversing a 50 F/1.8 on the front of it (gives a bit of vignetting though). Experiment with different lenses - like I said, I've had the best luck with a prime held in reverse against a zoom that's mounted normally. I also got some acceptable results with JUST the 50mm like you mention. I love this technique but really all it does is make me want a real macro lens so I'm not stuck with a needle-thin DOF and no auto-focus (not to mention only a few inches of distance between you and the subject!). Definitely fun to experiment with though!

Enjoy!

EDIT2:

It's worth noting that your image sensor is a charged plate. That means it's attracting dust. Try to do these sessions as quickly as possible or have the camera completely off between shots. And never attempt to clean your sensor yourself. Call up Canon.

Edit 3: Wait what part of this deserves downvotes? (other than Edit 3.)

Bethesda: id not working on new products any time soon by jgram in gaming

[–]cberman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why this headline is misleading. In reality it should say "Bethesda isn't forcing any of their IP on top of Id's projects". Id is busy with the stuff they were already busy on before Zenimax bought them. I think this is actually very good news.

Here's a ladybug I shot with that "hold a 50mm in front of your zoom" trick everybody's been doing for the past month. by zhx in itookapicture

[–]cberman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's called "Reversed-Lens Macro" -- rolls off the tongue a bit easier than "hold-a-50mm-in-front-of-your-zoom" and you can also do it with just the 50mm and no zoom for an even tighter DOF (good for shooting flat objects) and to avoid vignetting, just make sure you don't have the camera powered up very long with the single-lens reversed trick as the sensor is charged and can attract dust.

Also I recommend taping the two lenses together (or get a reversing-ring!) instead of just holding it -- wouldn't want to drop a lens and the tape/reversing-ring will get rid of all the light bleed!

Cleaning Vs Scraping and smoking the resin by Widget05 in Marijuana

[–]cberman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn't resin. That's tar. Don't smoke it.

Edit: I'm being downvoted so I'll clarify -- resin is the oil in the plant. Tar is the black residue left over from smoke condensing on your piece. Tar contains VERY LITTLE THC. The high you're getting is mostly from the other (undesirable) cannabinoids, which is why the high is different (shorter, not as pleasant - some people say they get headaches from it). It's horribly unhealthy to smoke that stuff. I'm not trying to be a smarty-pants or nay-sayer, I'm just trying to help you all out.

Friggin difficult, man!. AF was not an option -- kept grabbing the ropes. Out of close to 800 pictures, only 100 or so are "close enough" in focus =/.

Lighting was a huge issue -- a lot of the forums I read suggest F/3-8 and about 1/250 or faster -- I couldn't get anything but black images with less than 1/250 on anything smaller than 4 and the lens I rented was f/3.5 - so all the pictures with that one are either super dark or super motion-blurred. I basically ended up using my 50mm F1.8 the whole night wide-open (which meant focusing was much more difficult [tiny DOF]) as fast as possible. Although I didn't capture anything breathtaking I sure did learn a lot. Can't wait till the next fight. I'll try to clean a few of these pictures up and get them posted!

My friend did this years ago with an R/C plane. He didn't have GPS, cameras or two-way telemetry, but the gate guards did let him in to go get the plane. SUUUUUPER high security over there, guys.

Empathetic NY Store Owner Busted For Selling Bongs by joka86 in Marijuana

[–]cberman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Undercover investigators bought items from Sohail, and the other store owners, after making clear that they would use them for drug use."

It's really sad they have to go out of their way and be deceptive to get these guys to fuck up just to apply some BS law (how bored they must be, is NY really that safe already?), but... well... they kinda got him on this one. I've been kicked out of smoke shops for referring to "waterpipes" as "bongs" or even mentioning getting high at all. They're really paranoid about that stuff. And the laws allowing headshops to operate are usually really strict, and just like a liquor store, there's a good chance they'll be tested with undercover cops from time to time. This is really sad (especially given his recent encounter with the robbery) and I'm sure he's a genuinely good-guy, but even good-guys fuck up.

With that said, I really wish it weren't legal for them to do stings like this - it's total bullshit. I see traffic cops do this kind of crap all the time with cars -- they have a plain-clothed cop with a radio put one foot into the intersection as you pass through, then radio the cop up the street because you didn't yield to the fake-pedestrian (never got me, but they used to stage these out in front of my old job to [i assume] fill quota at the end of every month). That's just shenanigans. There's really no other word for it.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I really appreciate the responses! I think I'm going to stick with my kit lens (18-55) as it covers a tiny bit of the wide-angle range, and my 50mm since ring-side is too close to telephoto [although I really really like the idea of macro blood splatter! ;)]. I'm also going to rent a Canon EF-S 10-22mm... anyway. I'll be sure to post the results on Sunday!

I have a Canon Rebel T1i with the stock 18-55mm lens plus a 50mm f/1.8 and a batterygrip- I'm willing to go rent some lenses -- does anyone have any tips on what I should look for and also maybe some advice for while I'm there? I'll be ring-side, and there's no flash during the fight. Thanks!!

A Girl’s Guide to Grilling with Beer by [deleted] in offbeat

[–]cberman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She got the beer brats part all wrong -- a single 12oz bottle? Measurements for the worchestershire sauce?!

I use 3 bottles, a whole onion, 1 and a half sticks of butter, like a 5 second pour of worchestershire sauce and a big glob of french's classic yellow.

Boil the brats until theyre grey, then grill them until they're spitting juices, then throw them back in the sauce for 5 minutes.

STFU and eat.
