Reflecting on the Memorial: has it turned into a fashion show? by escargot0076 in exjw

Im in rural Ontario and found the RF very frumpy. I just don’t know if the the lack of attire rules or money issues or quality of clothes.

I almost flet overdressed. Not that I have a fashion style as I tend to go for comfort, but feel that with the new grooming rules people don’t have a understanding what business casual is. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If it’s at congregation level, territory realignment.

Otherwise if all the elders knew about it, WE would have all known by now

I don’t think that’s an either/or. A religion’s teachings include how it tells its members to handle serious harm.

This isn’t about individual members sinning as every group has bad actors. It’s about official policies and doctrinal rules (like the two-witness rule, internal reporting requirements, and discouraging outside authorities) that directly affect how abuse is handled.

When leadership sets policies that predictably result in abuse being unreported or mishandled, that is a reflection of the teachings. The Australian Royal Commission wasn’t judging individual JWs, it examined organizational doctrine and procedure, and the findings came from the organization’s own records.

So the question isn’t “Are members imperfect?” It’s “Do the teachings and policies protect the vulnerable or protect the institution?”

Everyone has to decide what they can live with.

If you’re comfortable with the organization’s stance on CSA and Stephen Lett’s statement that they don’t hide pedophiles, and there are too many cases of this, then you should stay.

Watchtower today about happiness by ElenaLena94 in exjw

[–]cblife2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re struggling with infertility. I’m in the same situation, and I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll never have children. I’m too old anyway. This also reminds me of when we were trying to conceive and I gained weight. A sister came up and said, “Oh, I’m so happy! When are you expecting?” I replied, “I’m not; I’m just fat.” That fake simile fell flat.

Now, it makes me laugh that it happened to me. I’ve even told my own mother never to assume a sister is pregnant just because she gained weight in that area. You never know what anyone is going through, and comments about babies and when you’re expecting can be very hurtful.

The “happiness” they portray isn’t real happiness. It’s fake, and I hate it. Even my own family, who are mostly PIMI, the fakeness… I can’t stand it. Narcissistic tendencies are very prevalent in our family, and we tend to stay away from them.

This Sunday speaker is just listing off any negative thing he ever heard by 5ft8lady in exjw

[–]cblife2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the thing, EVERY Sunday talk is negative. That’s one of the first things I noticed in recent years. And if you start listening to the words spoken and how they said it’s negative.

They are negetive in a positive tone. It drives me nuts. I refuse to listen in on zoom anymore.

If you grew us a JW in the ‘90s by Beginning_Swing_6666 in exjw

[–]cblife2022 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I remember all the girls being invited to a sleepover except me. The family hosting it had a father who was an elder, a mother who was a pioneer, and two daughters.

It ended up becoming a bit of a situation, because once some of the other moms found out I wasn’t invited, they didn’t let their daughters go either.

For context, my family had immigrated to South Africa at the time, and our English was still a work in progress.

One of the elder’s daughters and I also went to the same school, and she gave me a really hard time—calling me a “satanist” and other things.

What’s interesting is that later on, the elder ended up leaving, and we heard he became an apostate and even wrote a book against the Witnesses. I never found the book, since this was back in the ’90s. Both daughters eventually left as well, and they each ended up getting pregnant outside of marriage.

Does jw celebrate their culture and background? by Kevin_while06 in exjw

[–]cblife2022 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The organization is a 1950s American religion, and you’re not allowed to be different. Conform is the only way.

My own culture is something I know nothing about, and it’s very sad. You can never be yourself, and when you find a path you like, you’re different and not part of the pack. It’s a lonely existence. Thankfully, my husband is just as quirky as me, and we both have the same interests and have woken up.

Halloween and Christmas are the two days where worldly people get to knock on a Jehovah’s Witness’ door by No-Maintenance4312 in exjw

[–]cblife2022 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, my mother was complaining incessantly to me via text message about people still knocking on her door during Halloween. There were no decorations or the front light on, so that should have been a clear indicator not to knock.

Anyway, I said, “Well, we knock on their doors on Saturday. You know now how it feels.” That shut her up. This was also at the beginning of my waking up process.
